Neighbour dispute re high trees

Looking for advice please.

Our neighbours have trees that are ridiculously high & our house is in darkness.

They are refusing to trim them.

Am I right in saying this isn't a Council issue ? I know there is no height restrictions on trees in Ireland. So I'm presuming we would have to involve a solicitor, court etc

I'm sure this would be expensive.

Has anyone had any experience with this.

Wrong forum. I know a solicitor's first questions will be how old are the trees and how long have you been living there.

You are not entitled to light or sunlight. Your neighbor can grow the trees as high as they like. Your neighbor is in total control, though you can cut anything hanging over your property. I'd highly recommend not going the legal route as you don't have any legal rights. Legal route is expensive and could get your neighbors goat up.

It's crazy that someone can block light from someone else like this. There should be a maximum height for trees like this. And before anyone jumps up and down. This is not a "green" issue. This issue has been around for ever. It's not about removing trees, it's restricting them to certain heights in certain areas. How hard can it be to have a law for that ?

I used to work as a tree surgeon in the UK. Don't think their rules are any different to ours. As already said you have not right to light, no right to a view and no right to have any say in what your neighbor does with their trees.

Now having been in the middle of a good few of these arguments and being a tree lover I can see both sides.

Firstly I would question what ridiculously high means. Tallest ash tree I ever helped take down was 120 feet high and it was growing in a garden no more than 15ft x 12ft, that was ridiculously high. I have also gone looking for a row of 60 foot high poplars that needed topping. Turned out these 60ft high monsters were no more than 15ft high. So I'm saying people have odd ideas about the height of trees?

Then trimming trees is bloody expensive and in many cases does nothing for the tree except shorten its life. Given the choice I would never do unnecessary work on a tree.

I've also seen 6o foot high leylandii hedges that really had to be reduced in height. In one particular case the developer paid to have the work done but all the owners of the existing houses surrounding the the site went ape **** because they wanted their privacy. You just can't win in some cases.
