I had a huge simmental/angus cow and anytime someone was in heat she would have them cornered away from the herd. Best teaser you could ever want since she also doubled as a cattle dog separating them.
Very happy with the way this girl is filling out. Around 5/6 weeks old now off Powerful Proper
2 bull calves off heifers last weekend gone, pics are of them at a week old. First lad from Shannon Stan and the second off Erebos. The Erebos lad came a week early from my figures, was standing in the pen drinking in the morning when I looked in.
Stan calf presented upside down but he is only a handy fella so I doubt she would have had any trouble calving him on her own
great stock in fairness. best of luck with them, be interest to see how that Erebos calf goes I would imagine ou where looking for a heifer off him
Thanks. I inherited good stock here so I can't claim any of the plaudits for that.
Ideally I was looking for a heifer alright but I have a few heifers off him from last year. With first calvers all I want is a calf above the ground and not under it.
the society purchased a new bull. Wonder who they will use to sell him? Good looking straight animal
What did he cost?
15,000gns
few things don’t go my way this spring with cows and have a few to cull now. Think of buying 1 or 2 breeding heifers what kind of weight would I want to be going for ? 500 or heavier? Be hoping to bull them from April roughly. Also is there any good sales coming up?
Whatever weight you want your cow to be ,breed a heifer at 3/4 that weight
My cows would be around 600kg but I could probably do with a bigger cow as some of my heifers stay small,
I got the Dovea catalogue and price list today in the post. €13 per straw now for the regular Limousin. Claddagh McCabe now €50 and the new bull Cartonfree Unbelievable €25.
Must be fair demand for McCabe or his quantity of viable semen small
I know a man selling a few good heifers...
privately? where is he based?
Carlow
Dovea catalog and price list in the post today.
No sign of EBY, is he gone??
Lot of old reliable Limousins gone. Ivor, EBY, Joskins, Brooklands Rowan, Newton, Mullary Intrepid, Ivanonov. I’d expect they’ll introduce more limousin throughout the year
Were you told this by Dovea? I got 10 straws of Ivor last year, when someone on here said he was nearly gone.
I see Glenford Sam isn't on the pricelist either. Why is that?
do you have the bull’s picked out that your gonna use? Enyevalley madison looks a good bull seems to produce the goods
This is a 5 month old bull by the Bova bull Excel LM4027. He's out of a plain enough cow. He's heterozygous polled like his mother. Also very high on docility (95%). Muscle 98%, Skel 94%.
No just going on the catalog and price list not showing them bulls. I know last year Ivor was gone, so I stocked up in straws of his. I find him brilliant on heifers, cattle grow into good frames, and calf down with milk. They can act a bit silly at times, but he ticks most boxes.
I’ve 1 Glenford Sam here off a Loki cow. Grew into a nice heifer, but probably not as good as his breeding would suggest he’d breed. She was very handy born tho, ideal for strong maidens/ 2nd calvers
I’ve used Madison a few times, and going by what my Ai man was saying as well, he can be hit and miss calving wise. I’d a 2nd calver, calved a lovely bull calf by him. Gave her same again, massive heifer calf the next year. So just watch for that if using him. I bought 10 McCabe straws the end of last year, so I’ll use a few of them. In the limousin, I also have Huntershall Troy, Keltic Rembrandt, Millertime Topspot, Grangeford Jojo and a few of the Progressive French bulls in the tank that I plan on using this year, along with a few others. I’ll match them to the cows and hopefully get the matings correct🤞
Who did you get Troy from? Have you used Knock Msport with Elite? There's a lot of bulls in the upcoming premier sale in Roscrea by him. Seen a good few online at the UK Lim sales too.
I got Troy from Future Genetics. Peter I think his name was. My best PB cow is calving in June to him so we’ll see how that goes.
Ya I’ve used Msport, and will use more of him this year. Sold a lovely Elgin heifer the end of last year incalf to him, her time would be up at the moment, so I’ll give the purchaser a ring next week and see how things went there.
The Brontemoor here where Knock Msport is, rate him very highly, and are keeping all his heifers for replacement, so that’s a good sign of the bull.
What would the max inbreeding % that you would use?
Ive about 26 different LM bulls in the tank now and its mad how the small the gene pool is. I've bought some straws for this year from Elite to slightly expand the genetics
If you are logged onto ICBF, there is an 'Inbreeding & Predictions' tab under 'Applications'. I run this for the bulls I have to check against the females I have. Having some French bulls help avoid the UK bulls. I wouldn't like to go over 25% at most.
I think they flag them at about 6.25% but isn't mother/son 25%?
Ya, you're probably right. My mistake.
The Spring Gene Ireland bulls are out on ICBF
