Good to see this happening!
The Mayo end of the R332 is due to be upgraded soon also, if the council can get the finger out.
Decent amount of hillside demolition and associated works going on at Latteragh now. Project in full swing.
I said i would put this here as it maybe the closest thread. Has anyone noticed how bad some of our National and secondary road surfaces have got over the last few months? There is potholes it seams like forming everyday. Has the Maintaince been cut back on these roads?
The recent rain has caused a lot of damage.
Rain and frost combined caused even more damage.
The Tralee Northern Relief Road opens next Monday (Feb 16th)!
I saw a clip earlier of progress on a small project up in Mayo. It was on one of the Connaught Tribune's socials. Derradda to Newport I found this online
https://www.mayo.ie/en-ie/national-roads-office/projects/projects-at-construction/n59-derradda-to-newport-road-project
I don't think it has been mentioned here and even though it's an N road not sure if it warrants it's own thread. (Although now I see it's 5kms of improvement so possibly should be)
There Is a thread running for that road. It's progressing well after a long hold up prior to commencement. The Derrada scheme is part 1 of a 3 phase project between Newport and Mulranny.
Great thanks. I thought there might be alright but looked back and couldn't see it. August was the last post on that thread so I probably didn't go back far enough.
Update here on the Fintra Bridge Realignment in Co. Donegal.
Progressing well and due for early completion at the end of 2026

Gradual progress on the Ballynacarry Bridge N53/A37 over the River Fane. This has been talked about for 40 years.

Latteragh on the R498 is firing ahead. The two bridges over the Nenagh River have had abutments put in over the past while.
Four sets of traffic lights on the route during the day though, so you get a good chance to look at all the work.
Three route options for the Cong bypass have been unveiled by Mayo County Council (down from 11 options at first!!)
be some laugh if Cong got a bypass before Ballinrobe. Ballinrobe town is gone beyond a joke at this stage.
It has to be orange surely
They really should get on with Ballinrobe - it's a much bigger project though. It should be prioritised ahead of Foxford, for example.
I think both Ballinrobe and full Ballina ring roads should have been prioritised ahead of Foxford and Cong. By the time they are built the towns will be at a standstill.
I think Ballina could be tricky because of the Moy crossing. The ABP inspector recommended refusal of the Cloongullane bridge upgrade but thankfully the board overruled him.
You’re right it will be tricky with the Moy and all the SAC constraints. Thats why I would have liked it included with the western section currently going through the process. It will be years before the next phase is even looked at.
Tender out for construction of the 3km N70 Sneem to Blackwater Bridge (Tahilla to Doon) scheme
https://www.etenders.gov.ie/epps/cft/prepareViewCfTWS.do?resourceId=7963515
Estimated value 11.1m euro.
Would be nice to see them do these as a rolling project. Next up should then be Tahilla to Sneem (next 6km to the west) as it has much worse alignment than the project being put forward.
I believe they are in the process of signing contracts for this job with an early summer start date.
Is there any thread following the work on the Nenagh to Thurles (R498) route? Some heavy duty bridges being built by the look of things.
That's the R498 Latteragh realignment. There's some details on it upthread.
The contractor (Wills) have a site for the scheme with drone footage from April.
R498latteragh.com/drone-footage
I didn't know there was a website and I'm following it closely… thanks for that!
The one thing I wish they'd have had included is a segretated right/left turn for the Toomevara junction just west of this scheme. Its so close to the end of it and would have given some useful safety improvements.
31 million for 3.7km. They nearly cancelled the N59 Derradda upgrade in Mayo and that was 35m for 5.5km. With a little more inflation we're looking at 1m for every 100 metres of road!
That strech of road has been open for at least 6 months now at this stage.
You can see on Google streetview that there has been traffic on it from June 2025!
