HELLO TO JASON ISAACS
T'kumva or some such. I too enjoyed the newer take on the Klingons, and was interested to see where it all went. Then I realised nobody knew where it all went, including the writers.
He was almost like one of those ToS captains that went a little too far, but he was given a pass because of the war.
That was a great episode.
Also enjoyed the S1 where Harry Mudd does Groundhog day.
After that.....gets messy.
That was a HUGE disappointment. I was so up for him being a "Just get it done" Captain and then…. Yeah, and sudddenlt sounds like a TIE fighter at his end (Check it out. It's weird)
Done worse to Issacs who is one of the best actors Trek has had and was the perfect actor for a Trek captain. Could have been the best since Stewart and Brooks.
And then they relegated one of the best prosthetic actors in the business to saying "I trust you….." and basically sidlined him. I forgave a lot on that show but when they sidelined him to be with the "Alien-who's-tears-destroyed-warp", I never really forgave that.
Both of the first two seasons shot themselves in the foot with wild mid season pivots after decent enough starts. Issac and Jones do a lot of the heavy lifting acting wise though.
The only episode I really like from either is the episode where they find a WW3 era community on some random planet.
I will stand by much of S1 & S2 of Discovery. I enjoyed the Klingons, especially the main Klingon. I know: "Blah blah blah, not my Klingons". Whatever). I can't remember the name of the main Klingon actor but he spoke the language like a language as. opposed. to. single. barked. words. Jason Isaacs (Say hello to…) was great right up until the boring reveal and I lost interest in his character. I will admit that I have not rewatched them so I don't know if they hold up. I know that I definitely hung in there but didn't enjoy much of the rest. Some minor ups (Tig Notaro) but I REMEMBER liking S1 and 2 (And, yeah, it gave us SNW)
By the by, watched this (and SNW 1-2) on DVD. With behind the scenes docs, deleted scenes, etc., it really is the only way to fly, rather than messing around with siloed streaming or navigating the high seas.
So, I watched Season 2 of Discovery and actually quite liked it. My main reason for delving in was SNW sparking my interest in the Pike crew, etc. having not being motivated enough to carry on otherwise after the first Discovery season on netflix a few years back. I get that the Kurtzman shows will never have the same vibe for fans as the TOS-Voyager but plot-holes aside, I thought it was fairly decent sci-fi, with a plot that definitely kept me interested. Now, the "jump" to season 3 might be a different matter entirely…
I started an X-Files rewatch for the first time since the original run and it was great for a few seasons but the monster of the week episodes get very repetitive. Luckily Wikipedia lists the core alien plot episodes so I just watched them eventually.
I find the same with Stargate. Loved it at the time but the random generic planet episodes get very boring with some notable exceptions.
Ive never done a full run through of Stargate SG1(despite being a big Stargate Atlantis fan, funnily enough) and a colleague suggested I should.
Onto Season 2 now and really enjoying it. Although there are some episodes heavily influenced from other parts of scifi. One episode springs to mind which basically borrowed a bit of plot from Back to the Future.. :D
..
Everyone who watches TV or films is entitled to an opinion and to express it here. I never claimed to be a professional critic that’s your assumption, not my argument.
You’re hardly a TV/movie critic.
Just close down boards.ie too eh? By your logic nobody should ever criticise anything, just stop watching and say nothing, TV/movie critics everywhere out of a job. Discussing what works and what doesn’t is kind of the point of being on a public forum.
Maybe stop watching this show?
There are so many other things you could be enjoying.
Close:
Nice to see him back for more Origami Chicken? ;)
I see the class may battle a new enemy, Competence Professionalism and Maturity..
The last episode or two will probably be about him and have Giamatti back. Will also probably be the worst episodes.
Hopefully not the only episodes on the ship. Would be nice to see them off on a mission soon.
what important continuity is lacking from episode to episode in SFA?
Seems like there’s just enough of it for my tastes tbh, and I’m hugely relieved that the whole season hasn’t just been the search for Caleb’s mum!
Or at the very least some supervising writer maintain a sense of some continuity.
Not quite so, returning writers and very often the same writer throughout the season on most episodes
It's sort of the "timeless" / "ageless" quality of certain shows that I sometimes wonder about and reflect on thier quality. Jim Henson was a classic example of this, using his Muppets to tell stories first and foremost, with the secondary consideration of making them accessable to younger audiences.
Aiming stuff to specifically capture a young demographic at any point of time has been a fools errand for the entertainment industry since the dawn of time. They'd try to appeal to the "Yoof" and end up in with a horrendous blend of themes and styles that had gone off 10 years previous. With a handful of exceptions, this would often fail to generate entertainment.
However, when the whole audience is treated with respect and the content made accessable to younger audences and not specifically aimed at them…then things start to improve. Then we get the Trek of the 80's and 90's where my younger self was attracted to a show that had adult viewers in mind. I was part of that group, even though I was a child, and got enjoyment from a show that gave me that equal respect. With that came deeper stories, and more exciting themes.
I feel that this is the essense of good "Family Entertainment". Not shows that pander to the youngest member, but shows that have something to offer for everyone there.
I have not watched Academy, and I might not. Kind of depends on the overall verdict of the season. I'm hearing that it's not too bad…but Kurtzman Trek has burned us too often with a decent season start that turned into a god awful mess. I still remember being optimistic at the start of Picard Season 2 (Season 2 folks….Season F***ng 2). But if Academy is aiming at a demographic as of 2024-6…I sense this might be foolhardy of them. They are sort of guarenteeing a Sell By Date on a show that will likely appear dated within the next 5 years.
They should have learned the lessons of Jim Henson and others like him, and try to make something that appeals to all ages, and whose good work now belongs to the ages because of it.
@fritzelly I see nearly every episode has different writers/producers - no wonder there is no single connective thread through the episodes, every episode seems to be mish mash of what that writer wants.
Ah yes, so very much like TOS, TNG and many of the other ST shows. 👀
I was thinking more about breezy's comment – the original Muppet show treating children with respect and intelligence.
But anyway, Muppet shows aside, 90s Star Trek worked perfectly fine for the child/teen/young-adult "demographic" I was in at the time. I think I'm agreeing with you more than not on this one. SFA feels the need to have zaney teens and explicitly YA-stories instead of just.. being good.
There's no hate for Tawney Newsome. All that poster said is that she has one writing credit to her name.
Not just that post (which did seem to call her out as amateur), I've seen others complaining about her too. She seems to be a target for a fair bit of animosity.
I think that's something that's just harder to find in general these days, maybe not just a Trek problem
You completely missed my point on the Muppet Show. It's not just a general problem these days. Its just bad writing, or maybe bad editing.
