Sounds like the refurb for Electric is finally moving, apparently planning went in during December for changes to the frontage and an extra window overlooking the river. Sounded like they are hoping for a summer opening
Who bought that can't remember
The guy I was talking to said it was a company called Emporium actually running it who own Mabel Lane in Carrigaline
they also run the castle in glanmire, tradehouse central in Ballincollig and JJ Coppingers in Midleton. It’ll be brilliant id say
I can’t wait to see the building occupied again, it is so prominent. Hopefully they make good use of Peace Park too for dining and not just people drinking
Actually one of my old neighbours involved in that company I think.
Prime time are closing after 34 years in Cork. Sad times.
They're running the Carrigaline place into the ground. Saturday night, 5 bouncers outside, a further 3/4 inside and about 15/20 people in the bar. That's at 10.30pm. Other locals full. The over the top security is putting people off, as are the prices. Staff turnover is weekly, says a lot.
Food quality/service has been appaling the last 6months or so too. I know a few who used to go fairly regularly who wont go near the place now.
From the start they had a terrible reputation for security being dicks and trying too hard to curate the crowd. Lots of stories of people going there for lunch but being refused at night time because they weren't the preferred demographic.
Food quality has massively improved if anything.
There's been complaints and cynicism about the place since it opened. There'll always be people try and talk it down
"Curate the crowd" - Never heard that phrase, but love it !
From what I can see from the planning ( https://planning.agileapplications.ie/corkcity/application-details/13090074 ) its just for facade changes, but inside looks rearranged. It went in 12th December and consulation finished 26th Jan 2026 so hopefully movement soon. As people have mentioned, looks like a few pubs in their portfolio.
Eurogiant into liquidation with store continuing to trade for the moment
Something new seems to be going in where Con's Fruit and Veg was on Bandon Road.
Perhaps people were sharing their experiences of the place. Why try to belittle these experiences? Are business above criticism? Are you involved with the business? Your response is odd, to say the least - very defensive.
The place has had ridiculous claims made about it since day one. If you're from the town you'd have heard "I heard Mabel Lane is closing down at the end of the month" close to ten times in the past 3 years by now. Someone on this thread actually made that claim about 2 years ago because they confused it with the chicken place up the road, saying that the owners weren't paying their staff etc etc.
There's nothing odd about my post. It has a strange amount of vitriol thrown at it and very little of it matches real-life experiences of it in my view.
Obviously you aren't obliged to, but you didn't answer my question about whether you have some involvement with this business.
I really don't see why so many people would falsify reviews. I've never been but I've read a lot of credible reviews regarding the attitude of security and management there since it opened. It does seem odd that someone would try to cast doubt on these reviews and reviewers. Are you saying that they are false and malicious?
Sorry, no i don't have anything to do with the place. I don't even go that much anymore for pints but would for food.
The security thing I have never seen and have never heard any real world complaints about. I'm absolutely sure it's a thing in isolation but I wouldn't put it as a defining characteristic of the place at all.
As a venue though it does offer more than all the other pubs put together in terms of music, theme events, whiskey nights etc. so I would be a bit defensive if only because I think we should be looking for more places like that for our towns.
Fair enough, thanks.
TBR, I need you as my solicitor.
i was there a couple of times last year, security were grand if you were grand, usual city level of security. One of them was well known and sound as a pound. The food i didn't like personally but the menu was very fussy/fancy. sometimes overcomplicated menu's just don't go down well with some people while others love it. Overall they are still trading and expanding their bars if/when they open electric (whatever the new name will be) and the tradehouse in ballincollig i liked their food and vibes. so we'll see what happens with the city one.
New food 'stall' opening in the English market on the Grand Parade side of Eoin O'Mahony (they used to own that bit). Uncles...looks like a rotisserie place
Ha! I only came across this today and had a chat with Eoin. As far as I gather it's a joint operation between O Mahony's and the Handsum people.
Yes, rotisserie chicken, porchetta and maybe beef.
Oh nice! O'Mahony's is good.. and the Handsum people? Do you mean Benny McCabe/Rising Sons, i.e. Handsum IPA?
No. Marina market chicken people. Maybe I have the spelling wrong.
Cork Beo reporting that both Costa and KFC are applying for planning for drive throughs on the derelict 'Convenience store' site on the Kinsale Road Turners Cross opposite the McDonalds. Huge catchment for Virgin media Park
https://www.corkbeo.ie/news/local-news/plans-lodged-new-drive-thru-33399808
this would be horrific if approved. The traffic is already ridiculous there on a good day
Kfc looks like it's hardly surviving in Douglas, don't know how it's going to work in Turners cross apart from match and concert days.
Thought it was for the woodies car park.
