Nobody is forcing her to remain a member of the Catholic church so if she doesn't like it anymore she should just leave
Her criticism of the church is basically self loathing that has been directed externally. Mary has a degree in Canon law so essentially she spent a large part of her life very committed to the religion and now since her son turned out to be gay she can't stand that she committed so much time to an organisation that doesn't fully respect her son and instead of doing the sensible thing and leaving the church she gets angry at them because of all the time she wasted in her life being a committed Catholic.

Her mother got involved with some born again crowd, its that sort of evangelical Christianity that I've always associated with American teleevangelists and the Deep South.
