This is beyond disgusting.
We really do live in a lawless land. Imagine having killed someone so callously, at no point even showing any remorse, and ending up with a measly 6 year prison sentence.
Honestly, we are in a really terrible place as a country regards crime.
This piece of dirt should be looking at 15-20 years for this. There may be folk out there who think this won't rehabilitate this man, but what it will do is keep the general public safe from him for a far longer period of time. The sentencing in this country for serious crimes like manslaughter or murder are crazy lenient. No wonder this scumbag was literally laughing in court when the sentence was read out.
The lack of prison space is one of the most shameful things government have utterly failed in over the past 20 years. We just seem to have drifted as a country into a weird state of paralysis when it comes to law and order. It's sickening and doesn't get nearly as much media coverage as it should. Why are we accepting this as country?
Whats there to even rehabilitate? He deliberately tried to mow down someone in his car when he was 18 and Nolan gave him 1 year in jail (2 suspended also) for it.
He's been done for lots of violent crimes and thanks to being repeatedly let out to hurt others,my friend is gone.
And STILL they won't lock him up appropriately. How many more times will he be freed to attack people?
It would have been Martin's 36th birthday a few weeks ago. This man will be out before his own 36th birthday.

Suspended sentence....seems very lenient.
Maximum seems to have been 6 months but he was remorseful, gave up drinking and was a Guard who had the support of his colleagues who attended court. I'm surprised he got any time at all given his position and his ex walked free.

3 months suspended still seems lenient...that's because it doesn't sound like it should have been treated as a section 2 assault which it was, but hey.

Kicking someone in the head who's defensless on the ground should be minimum 7 year sentence, 10 years if the victim is seriously injured/dies
I flicked through an article on this in the Examiner - it was before the courts on 58 occasions, which must be some sort of record. The victim had a hard time getting it taken seriously.
the sentence does not indicate that it was taken seriously.
The sentence is the least of the inadequacies related to this case, it seems the victim was repeatedly abused by the system.

Not sure what you're getting at! You're surprised a domestic abuse case got to court. What do you think should have happened. Maybe give him a promotion..he already got that.

In fact I'm surprised when any case involving a member of the Garda gets to court.
On the rare occasion such cases do make it to court I consider it a victory for the complainant, albeit a pyrrhic victory.
Want to know why the rank and file hated Drew Harris? He was determined to root out guys like this. Remove the protections and circling of wagons that happened whenever an accusation was made against a Garda, all in the name of ‘protecting the Force’.

13 years though, and it looks like it only gathered speed in 2018. That effer has been suspended, on pay I presume, since 2019.
Imagine finding out that your ex-husband who beat the crap out of you has since been promoted to detective and issued with a firearm.
No doubt about it, Harris was rooting out corruption and misconduct within the force - and for that he was hated, and marked.
Harris didn't give a toss about any of then - didn't drink with them, didn't attend their weddings, didn't know their fathers or their wives and didn't play golf with them - he owed them nothing.

A guy going back to the victim and kicking him in the head a final time should be getting a ten year sentence, with no mitigating factors taken into account.
Going OT now but 100% agree. The cancelling of traffic tickets using discretion was ridiculous. Grow a spine and tell this grown man in front of you to take his medicine and watch his speed. Get on with more important policing work. That’s why the gosafe vans were brought in (one reason anyway) was to end this BS for a lot cases.

This suggests that 3 months suspended is on the upper end of what she would have imposed, what kind of a sentence would she have given to a Joe Public who wasn't a Garda? Offered to marry him maybe?
6 months for a crime like this is the maximum it seems. Meaning there are men out there reading this and thinking they can put some "manners" on their wives and probably get away with a suspended sentence
The law may have been updated since. I hope so.
There are still cases of historic child abuse going through the courts where the maximum sentence that can be imposed is 2 years, because that was what the law stated at the time.

In my opinion this man, who choked, beat and set his wife on fire, should have gotten a life sentence. Instead he got 6.5 years with the final 18 months suspended.
He will be out inside 3 years and ready to do it again. His brain is clearly broken, you cannot rehabilitate somebody like that.
The DPP have also declined to appeal the leniency of the sentence Nolan imposed on Martin's killer.
I read that earlier. That poor woman, that was surely attempted murder. How is that an appropriate sentence for what he did?
