No doubt similar to the Haaland deal who they got for only 50 mill
Exactly "only 50 million"
City are spending well, let's face it. We wasted a lot of money on Isak imo. Two centre backs with that cash. Liverpool lost the run of themselves in the summer.
if he's better value than Guehi would've been, then you could argue maybe not.
but you could still argue that going into this season short a CB, which we all knew we were, was negligent anyway.
We should have bought Leoni and Guehi.
Is 300k a week and a 20m fee good value for Geuhi?
Edit: apparently the fee is closer to 30m with add ons and Palace keep a sell on clause.
Leoni I didn't expect to play more than than a handful of games. Agreed, we should be have had at least one other CB, Guehi or whoever. Personally I think he's massively overrated, and this season hasn't altered by opinion.
Instead we were spending insane money on the attack. Ekitike aside, it has been a bit of a disaster. Wirtz has improved but he's still been a massive disappointment for his price tag. Early days of course and he is getting better with each week. The Isak deal was car crash from the get go.
How much is left in the kitty this summer is the question.
We have to buy a home grown player I think too so makes it harder
Is it just me or is Guehi only a 7/10 sort of player. I get he's available on the cheap but don't get the fawning over him. Don't deny that we need a CB bad this window though
Endo and Chiesa will probably leave in the summer so that'll free up two spaces. Not sure what way that'll leave us for CL squad though.
Ok with not getting Guehi. Doesn't bother anyone else that he apparently had a Liverpool jersey in at the end of the transfer window and has now gone to City for better wages? Can do without someone whose bottom line is how much he's being paid to play for the club.
We absolutely need a CB - ideally this window also - but Guehi? Meh.
I saw one interview with Guehi at the end of last season and felt he had no preference to where he ended up. It was whatever was best for him.
You are fooling yourself if you don't think every single player is trying to reach the top of the earnings tree. Guehi is no different to Salah in that respect. Given how hard we pursued him it seems odd that we never even put up a fight for him in the end. I thought we had a good summer of signings but hindsight has shown it was at the detriment of team depth.
Fxxking Glasner now saying he told Palace in October he's leaving at the end of the season!
1 and a half months after he torpedoed the Guehi deal!
The bitterness is gas
Can we bring up the rainbow armband 🌈 now?
lol at all the ‘Guehi isn’t that good anyway, sure he’s just a mercenary’ TAEKs. You can try and make yourself feel better about this if you want, but this is one right in the eye for the club, and it’s extremely irritating. Irritating that Glasner torpedoed the transfer at the death of the summer window for what we now know was absolutely no reason. But a stark reminder of where we are relative to City except for the seasons where everything goes right for us. Liverpool were muscled out of this one, for a player we really wanted last summer and were excited to get. Trying to pretend up is down on this one isn’t fooling anyone.
Sadly we absolutely were. He's a top player.
I always had my own reservations!
£30 million with 6 months left on his contract and £300k per week seems a lot of money for him.
No bitterness. 7/10 is a decent player. Just not sure he would have the same level of hysteria about him if he wasn't coming to the end of his contract and available on the cheap.
Much like an injured player's importance gets magnified the longer they are out, a player seems to get better the closer they get to the end of their contract.
I was more worried about Munich or Madrid turning his head over the next 6 months.
We were all excited to be getting him in August. To have the deal fall apart in the last hour was a punch to the stomach.
To lose him to City in January is like a kick in the balls.
You would have thought that we could have negotiated first refusal with Palace if they had said they could sell him in January
Dealing with Palace this month probably wasn't a problem. It was the player who decided they wanted to go to City because he is going to earn a lot more money. Guehi was never going to agree that Palace give Liverpool first refusal.
I don't think we'd have offered over 200K a week and pay the up to 30m. Yes if he was on a free we'd probably have went over that limit but no way would we give him close to the reported 300K a week so it's an easy decision for him.
I think he's a very good player in a back 5 but I said during the summer there was question marks over his ability to play in a back four but we'll soon find out.
I don't think City will regret the signing.
Just pointing out that I won't be losing any sleep over this. City's allure is the high wages they pay. Clearly there's a wage structure that our recruitment team aren't willing to break for him so that's just the way it is. We do need a CB but not at any cost. There are posters here who want everyone to be outraged but, nah, Guehi wanted to go to the highest bidder financially for himself so good luck to him.
We will be paying a lot more in summer for CB. Might not be paying 300k in wages, but we certainly won't be getting anyone for 20m. Another **** up by recruitment team, who both need to go at this stage.
I'd be very curious how much his wages were gonna be with us back in the summer when he had agreed to sign. 300k for a centre back is crazy money in fairness and we simply cannot compete with that. Not even Salah or Van dijk made that much before their current deals I believe.
So who do we get in if we get rid of Edwards/Hughes,I presume they are the two that you want sacked?
If I was Liverpool, I'd be keeping a close eye on developments between Van de Ven and Tottenham. There's a proper player you break the bank for.
😉😉
Ekitike and Wirtz allegedly on 200k. If we'd landed Guehi I'd imagine he's have been about the same...?
So on the face of it City are paying 5m a year more than we would. Not that much in theory, but reflect that across the squad and you're probably talking well over 50m a year in extra salary
The club have to draw a line somewhere. I'm raging we've lost out but I do think it's probably right to be pragmatic
