Succession isn’t problem, it’s the unwillingness for some right or wrong to get up off their holes and milk the cows.

agree….some of these new guys coming thru just can’t to be managers and run a farm without getting there hands dirty …lease farms hire in cheap foreign visa workers and give them bare minimum of what they are entitled to ,walk over smaller guys to rent more land etc etc
I think the reason those sort of cases never end up in court is as Green Dairies said, the legal fees are prohibitive. I saw a case in Co Kerry in the paper lately, the legal fees were €75,000 (reduced down from €93,000 on appeal) and the compensation paid out was €25,000… so the legal fees were 3x the actual compo money. I’d a big case myself that got settled up in 2024. In 2021 I was approached to settle the case — I told them I’d do them a favour and settle for €40,000, the other side turned it down. Long story short it eventually got settled out of court but it ended up costing the other side close to double my original offer of €40K, once all the legal fees etc were paid and of course once the compo money was paid also
As regards renting land, if a fella has no money to pay the rent in the first place you wouldn’t be at much chasing after him for €100,000 in legal fees 😂
If its below 75k its the circuit court. 5-10k goes a long way in legal costs. Of you get a judgement the Sherriff collects

In reality with how scarce land to rent is down here, ( nice 30 acre farm made 530/ac recently) most are eager to keep it and look after it. It would be snapped up by a different farmer tomorrow anyway. Wether milk is 50c or 30c, cows need grass and silage and nitrates and fert limits are still in force.
It doesn't seem to happen very often though. There's a lot of unpaid debts in this country
@yosemitesam1 Is there really 🤔 . I don't doubt it ... but I've been told that so often for a long number of years but no-one seems to own up on either side 🤔
Probably wouldn't be big enough debts, most tenants have to give a fair percentage of the money up front and if they don't they're gone
A neighbour who's slow and steady is a safer bet at €300/acre than some 500-cow man from three counties away that an auctioneer claims will pay €500/acre.
Very true, and thankfully a man I lease land off has the same opinion.
I told the story on here before, lease was up for renewal 2 years ago, I wasn’t looking forward to the discussion as land was freely making double what I was paying him and more around us. He asked for €20 an acre extra. 2 or 3 times I offered him more and he told me if i offered it once more he was putting me out of the land and that was it.
In the first 5 years I was in it I fenced a lot of it, put in extra water troughs, widened the road gate, put in a crush and pen, reseeded 2 thirds of it and have the soil indexes all brought up. I pay him upfront in January and that’s the only contact we have all year and I cut all the ditches along with the road ditch for another bit of land of his that he has leased to another man. Thankfully he seen the value in having a tenant he knows is minding the place and doesn’t give him hassle and it seems both of us are happy now.

Remember seeing a 1000 man interviewed and he said he had great neighbours that let him expand.
I was caught for a little under 10k before. Solicitors advice was that it was unlikely to be a cost effective exercise to chase the money with no guarantee of ever getting it if I did go through with the process.
Can't imagine how the businessmen that bass is on about would go chasing lost money on someone who pulled out of a long-term lease early
With them boys its a point of principle they are dealing with it day in day out. It would be a point of principle with me, I always repay my debts so I always expect to be paid. I perfer to spend whatever I get back and another 5k with it than let some f@@ker away with it. It in the nature of the beast.

Greed be gets greed. There's stories in these parts of big farmers knocking corners off land into neighbour plot holders and it not their's to do so.
I see a recent Irish independent online bit of the difference per acre of land in wexford and the east and the west of Ireland in bps. The way they phrased and wordplayed it was the southeast farmers were enlarging their holdings with the reduced money compared to the western farmers who depend more on bps. But for one to get bigger, another has to get smaller or give up. There's some right fluckers in the media and farming too with their stupid spin.

The price of oil probably has an effect on how viable a solar company is, given they’re both in the energy market.
It’s optimistic enough to assume your solar company will outperform oil over the duration of your 30-year contract.
It might work out and best of luck to anyone who makes their fortune from it, but it’d be a no from me.
Should be a clean up fund tax theres going to be some mess in a few years some of the best land in the country under glass no doubt there will beva tax like to be paid for by those with nothing to do with solar panels or turbines
Drumgoon dairy in the states were on farmflix, he spoke about the AD plant on his farm not being what was promised because it was linked to the price of gas which was low. Id have to watch it again but im fairly sure that's the jest of what he said. Only thing going for the panels here is that power is so expensive compared to the state and I dont think wind is the answer when most days I look across the the turbines I can see and they aren't turning!!

A lot of good land not too far from @Bass Reeves gone under solar panels in the last 12 months. 90% limestone land. An absolute disgrace.
