It's handy alright. I wish it would let you save them for christmas rather than automatically deducting at till when you scan the app. Although it's still an improvement i guess. Would still like to see more bulk machines rolled out
In the app go to account then under wallet go to my deposits.
Untick refund all deposits and this will let you save them.
This might seem silly but if you were applying for a medical card or careers allowance/etc.
Could the few euro you get push you over the limit and cause you hassle?
The refund is just your own money being returned so no that would not count as income.
On the other hand if you were collecting large volumes of containers above what would be normal domestic usage it could be an issue.
In that case better to take your receipts and cash them.
To be honest if you needed to get assessed for anything I'd just take the money. It would just be less hassle.
That's what I do anyway.
I do my returns going in to do the weekly shop and use the receipt against my purchase.
If the RVM is out of order I try again on the way out and if it's working I hold onto the receipt until the following week.
I think I'll continue this way, it suits me.
Machines differ and cans ?????? . I brought ‘ refurbished’ 30 cans to a machine in a shop that had two machines The first machine I used rejected 5 of them and the machine beside it accepted the five ‘ rejects’

There's nothing to be thought out here - it is your own money and will not affect anything. Doesn't stop the people who itch to find something to moan about moaning about it of course.

Yes for sure, machines differ.
But I've never had to dump a container that I actually paid deposit on.
Try twice, hold onto the container and try a different machine works for me.
I had had a few rejects spitting them out and used other machine and it worked.
Reported into the shop and next time was in rep was out cleaned sensor and updated software and no issues.
Holding out for the monster dump can machine as got 3 green shopping baskets full of cans and 2 bags of bottles.
So if this comes in, what's the incentive for shops to keep operating ReScam's machines? What they get out of having a machine in the shop now is that the customer has to spend the voucher in the shop. If the customer can just send that money to their bank account and walk away the shop is losing out.
I can't see shops bothering going through the hassle of operating a RVM (and it's a right pain in the arse for staff) if a significant number of people are just pocketing the money. It wouldn't surprise me at all if we start seeing shops giving their machines back and less outlets getting one in.
It is a bit of a myth that you have to spend your voucher in the shop where you return your containers. You are entitled to just cash it in at the till, I do it all the time.
@Tony EH using voucher in store was just a nice added bonus for retailers.
Retailers get 2.2c for each container returned, a decent benefit that was designed in for them from the start. So yes DRS is a pain in the ass but it's one which they get compensated for. (2.2c doesn't sound like a lot but it would often be as much profit as they make from the sale of a beverage.)
Also, I think if a retail location sells drinks containers and are above a certain floor size or sales volume, then they must, by law, accept returns (smaller retailers may request an exempt). They don't have to have an RVM, they can do manual, but that's a bigger PITA for a smaller reward.
Re-turn works well for retail and for producers, its only consumers who are inconvenienced for no benefit.

Anyway as Ive said many times IBAN refunds are well overdue so although I think Re-Turn is a carbon footprint clownfest anything that makes life easier for the customer / shop staff is welcome. More details needed.
Yeah but we have many anecdotes on this thread from people who have been to stores that aren't really engaged. Yes they must have an RVM on their premises. Some places like Lidl, if the machine is broken, you tell a member of staff and they page Larry the RVM-guy to come fix it. Or you go to SuperValu and the machine is not working, you tell a member of staff who gives you a blank stare and says "oh maybe try another day?". That staff member doesnt pass on to anyone that the machine is not working and it remains not working until ReTurn come to empty the machine and reboot it 3 weeks later.
100% this. I know people who load the voucher on to a Tesco gift card etc and let it build up until back to school time or Christmas. An easy way of saving for a lot of people. Especially those who don’t traditionally use bank accounts etc.
In my area, and now this is anecdotal, I did notice a lot more coffee cups on my litter picks since the scheme came in and less cans and bottles. I wonder have some people switched to coffee from the petrol station to avoid paying the deposit? They can fling that cup out the window of their car or van safe in the knowledge that it’s not 15 cent they’re throwing away too.
I've never had an issue when staff won't get the machine working again when I've reported it not working. Usually it just needed emptying.
Yes, the store owns the machine and it's in their interest to keep it working.
If it's not working it's not earning and their customers are not happy because they can't get their money back.
Also Re-turn truck drivers don't reboot machines. Typically they collect from the orange bins at the rear of the store.

Thanks man! People like you not collecting their refunds are what is funding improvements to the scheme. Bank transfers, bulk machines etc are funded from the millions that goes unclaimed. Keep it up, you’re benefiting us all!
Have you considered "ethical littering". Throw your deposit containers around the general environment so others can benefit from your lost deposit.

I wasn't being completely serious, more a satirical comment on how the scheme would try to characterise some community good from people who litter, like casting your empties around is now an act of charity.
A more serious point is that DRS is not designed to reduce harmful plastic use, it's not like plastic bag tax that reduced use overnight.
There are some ways to avoid the scheme but none are incentivised, DRS has been built to perpetuate and grow single use plastic for decades to come. It's defeatist.
Almost guaranteed that your bin collectors are getting the refund. But if they aren't, you're only adding to Return's surplus. You aren't contributing to their downfall, but if convincing yourself of that makes you happy somehow…
