Going through the town of Fermoy to avoid the toll is a ball ache. Traffic levels are higher now than they were pre motorway.

You could easily add 20-30 mins to your journey just to "save" €2.30.

There was a discussion on the France thread about how during a busy weekend recently several hubs had queues while others were empty

If I had one fault around EV driving it's about finding decent charging hubs. It's often a case that you'll have a charging app which only shows the chargers in it's network and not others, so you might not even be aware there's another hub less than an hour away

This leads to a sunk cost fallacy where people queue for a hub they know about and won't keep moving because they don't want to risk losing time

Apps like Plugshare are good but you're dependent on the community to maintain them. I've noticed in France this is hit and miss at best

In any case, I don't think apps are the way to go since that encourages phone use while driving

Using the in car satnav is a good option but again you need it to know where the chargers are. My ID.4 for example doesn't know about any Circle K chargers so won't use them for route planning

That's why I think simple motorway signs are the best option. Just a display with something like "EV charging ahead, up to 150kW, 6 available, 4 unavailable, €0.65/kWh, next hub 50km" tells you everything you need to know. There's already similar signs showing the fuel prices on the M1 so it should be possible

There is the occasional charger where the price is set at 40c, even though most belonging to the same provider are a chunk more expensive - e.g. CCS charging with ePower normally costs 73c, but the one at Dundalk railway station is 40c. A few of their Type 2 chargers cost the same. No idea what criteria they have for deciding where it should cost less, or if it's possibly something agreed with the local council or similar.

Tesla for example can afford to subsidise their chargers with car sales revenue. Other charging companies don't have that kind of safety net hence the reason you won't see a 30-40c offering except during promotional periods. CPO's would simply lose money at that price point.

We have CCS chargers at work, they're 18c/kWh. I asked the boss how he can afford such good value, he said it's the price he pays at the commercial level so he just passes the same price on to the employees

So when somebody says they will make a loss if it's less than 65c/kWh they're talking crap

CCS unit used to cost around 50,000 euro if you take into account the unit, the groundworks and grid upgrades. More for higher power units. They you have site rental. The unit itself will probably be worn out in less than 10 years, and require ongoing support and stolen/cut cables. I suspect most Irish charging companies are running at a loss especially if paying back loans with low amount of users per day. It's like the price if coffee at home vs outside home. It's not the cost of the beans.

Hold up, that's 50k for the unit alone. SSE here are in the hole for about 200-300k in hardware costs. Plus there's the cost of the ESB connection (it must be a minimum of 800kVA given the size of the hub) which can be anywhere from ~€30k up to €xxx,xxx depending on how weak the grid is in the area plus a substation which is another €300k plus SLA', back end software, etc. etc. etc.

At 18c/kWh I somehow doubt very much Red Silurians boss dropped the guts of a million euro on his chargers.

Its worth remembering that the CPO are often getting up to 75% back in grants

Still not cheap, and they need to get finance to afford the charger in the first place, but it does call the idea that they need to charge 65c/kWh to fund expansion into question

I'm guessing it's a 50kW unit probably using the existing power supply to the building? That would certainly keep costs down

The thing that annoys me for pricing isn't the 70c/kWh for a 200kW charger, at least you're getting what you're paying for (in theory)

My gripe is with companies charging high prices for 50kW or 22kW AC chargers. Nowadays those units are a lot cheaper for installation costs and even with commercial daytime rates they really shouldn't be charging more than 45c/kWh (which is still quite expensive compared to night rates)

Did they need upgrade the incomes and add MIC to allow for an extra 3MW?

As I said already, he's passing on the unit rate that he is charged. He got a grant to install the chargers at little to no cost and the billing is done through ePower who charge a per-transaction charge of about 20c which presumably covers their costs

Sounds like we're all in favour of high kw/h charges going by the rapid defence of such charges.

Are we not asking why? Considering 90% of the posts are just parroting from another source, it seems a weird stance to take.

Used to see the same in the main motors forum over the years - folks actively defending high pump prices and ascribing it to X, Y, and Z without really understanding or knowing anything about it.

The attitude seemed to be "if I'm paying it, you're paying it too pal".

That’s not my stance at all. Working in construction, I fully understand how expensive it is to build infrastructure like this. What surprises me is how unwilling some posters seem to be to acknowledge just how eye‑watering those costs are — and that private companies have to charge accordingly if they’re ever going to recover their investment and turn a profit.

There are far too many CPOs in the market for this to be any kind of coordinated cartel, yet judging by some of the comments, you’d think that’s exactly what was happening. The prices they set are far more likely a reflection of the huge upfront and ongoing cost of developing these sites and the need to recoup that spending within a reasonable timeframe.

My view is that the price should relate to the value of the service

A 22kW AC charger should be significantly cheaper than a 200kW one

Instead they're often within a few cents of each other, which is just ripping off the customer

It's also bad for the environment since HPCs often encourage the use of gas peaker plants, whereas a slow charger is more predictable

HPC don’t really bring on gas peakers. You could also say that they reduce curtailment so utilise more renewables.

You are right AC chargers especially single phase should be significantly cheaper.

50 7kw chargers only need the same supply as one 300kw charger
