Exactly. They act like closed doors. They're not completely sealed, so something will always get through (through the letterbox, through a gap at the bottom, by opening the door itself, etc) but they do help in leaving lots of stuff outside (rain, wind, snow, heat, dust, bugs, pests, etc) and keeping lots of stuff in (like your dog who mistakes the postman for a chew toy). Much better than having no door at all.

A friend on my old man (late 70's) has 19 siblings. He reckons there was so many of them because there was no TV back then so riding was the the only thing to do to pass the time.
