According to KB it's "very expensive " to produce in-house. I can't fathom how, and I'd have thought that the national lottery would have covered most of the costs 😕

Not entirely unrelated, but a few years ago I did a consulting gig for a heavily unionised state body. I dont want to say which one. I did a security audit of their systems and then made my recommendations. They said they couldnt implement my recommendations because union rules state that any changes to the IT system each person would need to get 4 days off for training on the system.
I said: But the recommendations I have made will be completely transparent to the users, its just a change to the architecture, the average user wont see a difference.
Them: Doesn't matter. Union rules state: Any changes to the IT system require 4 days off for each user for training. As you can imagine, we cant afford to let the users off for 4 days so, can't make your changes.
So yeah, I'd well believe similar union rules being along the lines of there needing to be a grip operator and a sound engineer and a gaffer multiplied by 3 for live Saturday night broadcasts, or some such.

Wow, its not often I agree but its becoming more regular. Now if they have to employee a conductor, a bell ringer and a number of sound engineers due to union rules, I think perhaps they should let it go :)
Heads might explode, but you can have a break for reflection without an exclusively Catholic call to prayer.

It's a catholic prayer right before the main evening news, it's a total anachronism from the era when he country was run by bishops. No amount of postmen looking reflectively towards the sky can deflect from that.
In other countries it is broadcast by specifically catholic broadcasters, that is not RTE.

One of the only problems I have with the Angelus is that it allows RTÉ to deflect. It gets people to say:
"Oh! It not a bad thing after it gives us a moment before the news on Radio and TV and its only on their main channels it is not like it is broadcast on RTÉ2, RnaG, 2FM, GOLD or Lyric"
"Oh! it sooo old fashioned it should be stopped its of a certain era."
Rather than did you see that RTÉ have being wasting money on the lotto since the show start broadcasting back in the 1980s and it just shows how they have failed as a public service broadcaster and continue to waste money.
We now know that RTÉ could have been a much strong broadcaster but instead they choose to spend their money on a 10 minute broadcaster twice a week, while continuing to have their top management team receive car allowance each year worth 25K. and so on.
You know, his comments have really annoyed me.
If you were running a restaurant and a person came in and said they wanted champagne and oysters, you wouldn't say "Oh.. you know those are very expensive…". You would say sure! And you would charge them the going rate along with a 10% service charge.
KB's comments really indicate he(and his predecessors) has no talent whatsoever with managing money. Hence the bailout was needed.
If you are in the business of making and selling something, it doesn't matter if its boats or beds or ballet slippers, you get an idea of the buyers budget, decide if you can make the thing for them while ensuring you get paid for your time and will make a profit, and either agree to do it, or you don't.
Radio Maria Ireland fulfils the specifically Catholic broadcasting function for those who want it.
They do a two minute Angelus followed by a series of prayers at 12.00.
The RTE version is perhaps more accessible for members of other religions or none.
No. I work in the gambling industry, and have spoken to the Lottery's about this. The Lottery believes their numbers are hot property because a lot of people tune in to get the numbers (less now in the internet age). Commercial TV stations understand this, and fold this information and value into their commercial terms with national lotteries. In some countries, the licence requires the lottery use the national broadcaster, but in all cases I'm aware of, the broadcaster covers the cost, because it is valuable (as noted above). However RTE has some quirks. It's not terrible, but it's not perfect. Some words like "restrictive practices" "entitlement" "overpowered unions" "self-importance" are thrown around. RTE productions are expensive, and while sometimes you see that money on screen (drama series, etc) for stuff like the lottery, you just don't.

The BBC used to produce a weekly ‘shiny floor show’ for their lottery program on a Saturday evening. This was discontinued around a decade ago. Similarly Rte used to have winning streak which was never revived after Covid. I seem to remember Ronan Collins being quoted as saying that hosting the twice weekly lotto draws was a nice little earner when he used to do it. All that’s needed is an onscreen graphic between shows with the continuity announcer reading the numbers. Let the national lottery do the draw with the usual authentication (at their expense). Money saved.
TG4 and Sky used to air the Euromillions broadcast on Tuesday and Friday nights.

They problem with Winning streak is that it was produced earlier in the day, but if RTÉ wanted winning streak pre-recorded they could have always produced it from 7pm until 8pm, going live the the lotto.
They mentioned Telly Bingo, which is produced by Hype for the lotto and has been for about a decade if not more.
I wonder if they have Fr Clippit on their roster?
You come across as small minded and pathetic. If you have an issue with the Angelus change the channel. Consider broadening your horizons a little. A visit to a majority Muslim country would help - where a call to prayer (Adhan) is made five times daily. It's broadcast loudly from mosque loudspeakers. It summons Muslims to pray and declare their Islamic faith.
They seem to have quite a few contributors.
I'm not of their faith but I admire their organisational skills.
It will be interesting to see if the National Lottery consider moving the lotto over to Virgin Media. Especially as the DG said that they will need to consider the times at which they broadcast.
They should just broadcast from an iPhone to their own YouTube channel. Why would they be spending money on anything more?

In fairness, they spend more than enough on advertising and marketing. They must be RTE's biggest single advertiser - too much, too frequent.
Which makes the DG's comments even more frustrating. Going back to my restaurant analogy, your most regular customer who orders "expensive things", he should be rubbing his hands with glee, not complaining that its expensive.
Seems to me that if RTÉ were running a restaurant the staff would be tipped by the restaurant on behalf of the customer, the price of the meal would only cover the cost of the food, that each diner would have a waiter or waitress to server them and another to spoonfeed them following by a complimentary glass of champagne and that new chairs, tables, cutlery, plates and glasses would be used for all new customers.

What's small minded and pathetic is the "ah sure it's only a minute" etc nonsense whenever this relic of the 1950s is discussed. Yeah, 1950s, this thing which is such a vital part of our national identity didn't even exist on Radio Eireann for a good 30 years after it was founded. And no, it's not a pause for reflection or whatever, that would be silent, the angelus is not.
They'd have to remove their shoes at the door and put on RTE branded flip-flops.

Would it not be part of the commissions/IPU (This wouldn't be an open tender process as such, it would be a commission)? Or have the made a different deal with the Lotto themselves so it is now the Lotto that will produce the show or they will find a producer? (Lotto now being a commercial entity)
Reported on RTE tonight that after March 11th the lotto will be produced/broadcast from Lotto HQ at the new time of 8.58pm. No mention of presenter. I hope it won't be like the uk lotto with just an ai voiceover😕
