DCC wants to rename Herzog Park

Dublin City Council plans to remove the name of Chaim Herzog from the small park in Rathgar that bears his name, beside the only Jewish school in the state. Herzog was born in Ireland and became President of Israel in the 1980s.

The councillors who support removing the name claim it is because of the war in Gaza. But Herzog obviously had nothing to do with the war, given he died in 1997. Instead, all reasonable people will recognise blatant anti-semitism when they see it. Does DCC want Dublin to be a Judenfrei zone?

It was mocking the victims in Gaza, with a seemingly drowning man waving a Palestinian flag, who it turns out was standing in shallow water as the cartoon progressed.

You mocked the dead in Gaza, said something along the lines of "worst genocide ever!", and claimed multiple times the population was growing, which was, of course, horsesh*t.

When this was proven to you, you ran away.

You didn't acknowledge, at least not publicly. Nor did you retract.

And most sadly, you didn't learn from it.

You have kept up posting disinformation and lies, not checking the facts of what you say, and when you are challenged you run away.

Why do this?

Do you not have the belief of in what you say to be able to defend it?

Israel is pretty good at building walls around itself - but you're right, it doesn't solve anything. Especially as the walls keep moving outwards as they grab more land.

As for Settlers fitting, I'm not sure - but whatever number you choose, I'd imagine you could double every few weeks based on their MO.

The wall would be a permanent reminder of the apartheid system being practiced by Israel. Like war memorials, this would be a genocide and ethnic cleansing memorial. The names of the 70,000 to 100,000 dead Palestinians in the last two years could be written on it.

Ah jaysus Sean, I believe that was around December last year. Approx 40k dead at that stage. The first blockade of food and aid was couple of months in. The hospitals had all been bombed, including the maternity ones. Bunker buster bombs were being used on civilian populations. Much of Gaza had already been reduced to rubble. Mass warcrimes were widely being reported. Day in day out, we saw people being butchered.

Some things don't need "population statistics", and definitely don't need to be mocked. The fact that you ignored - and still do - widespread reports of ethnic cleansing from the enclave, declarations of genocide from the experts (which were trickling in then), speaks volumes. I'm amazed you didn't stop and think that maybe, whatever source you get your news from, is feeding you bullsh*t.

Quiet simple to do the maths .

More being born than being killed really puts a huge question mark over claims of genocide. Either that or the Israelis just aren't that effective at wiping out a population.

Because since the war began, Gaza's population has dropped by approx 6%, compared to a pre war growth projection of +2% (and that was back in January). This figure includes births. That equated to approx 160k people (mix of people killed, dying of natural causes, getting out etc). The kill rate at that time, officially, was around 55k. It is about 70k now, so I'm sure that has moved the 6% dial wide then.

So no, your numbers and your maths are wrong.

The link you’re waving around doesn’t show that “deaths have outstripped births” — it shows that newborns are being delivered into catastrophic medical collapse, not sure it's the big flex you think it is, my God.

The article says 130 babies are born daily, many in tents, without medicine, without nutrition, with skyrocketing rates of miscarriage (300% up), and huge infant-mortality risk. These numbers won't be included in with those killed by bombs.

Gaza’s population has fallen by about 6%, per the article I posted from last January, likely more now, not because people suddenly stopped having babies - but because tens of thousands have been killed or gone missing.

Bringing up Yemen or anywhere else is just a deflection. This thread is related to Israel. You’ve no idea what that poster thinks about Yemen or any other conflict. You’re just whatabouting because it suits your argument. We had someone on the other thread constantly shouting “Why isn’t there a thread on Sudan? It’s because you’re all antisemitic.” After being told for months to “start a Sudan thread if you care so much,” he finally did… posted a handful of times and vanished. Zero interest in Sudan, it was just whataboutery.

And the reason Israel gets so much attention isn’t some secret bias. It’s pretty simple:

The whole thing is massively one-sided, they are not under any kind of attack from anyone inside Gaza for months upon months now but they continued to pummel it. They’ve blocked aid, starved people, flattened entire areas. Hospitals, medics, starving people queuing for food, all murdered repeatedly. It is not the same as some other conflicts you people throw around like footballs.

Settlers in the West Bank openly steal land, attack families, burn farms and homes, all under the Israeli government’s eye and with their tacit support in some cases and outright support from certain government ministers in others. How are we supposed to ignore that while also pretending Gaza is just “self-defence”?

They present themselves as a Western-aligned democracy. They take part in our cultural sporting events (Eurovision, European football)… of course people here will take more of an interest in it than other conflicts. They’re “one of us,” supposedly. Not to mention they are backed heavily by certain Western democracies in some form or other.

None of that is antisemitism. It’s criticism of a government and its actions. Do you throw around the term Russophobia as well when people criticise their behaviour in Ukraine?

Surely people understand it is normal that people in Ireland talk more about stuff that feels closer, be that geographically, culturally, politically. There’s an entire thread obsessing over Trump, and the US is marginally further from Ireland than Gaza is. Weird how that never bothers the same people. It is convenient to ignore that and throw around mealy mouthed accusations of anti semitism I suppose.

And the “Hamas talking points” thing is just lazy. Criticising what a state does is not the same as supporting the group they’re fighting. That’s just an attempt at shutting people up.

Also, I’ve been called an antisemite on here before for calling out the actions of the Israeli government. I lived for years in Eastern Europe, in places still scarred by the Holocaust. In early 2023, I visited the temporary exhibition under the synagogue in the Jewish quarter in Budapest and it genuinely floored me. The wife had stayed upstairs with the kids and when I came up from the basement and saw my own two kids standing there waiting (my son still wearing the complimentary kippah supplied on the way in) I broke into tears. Strange behaviour for someone who supposedly “hates Jews”, isn’t it? The person who threw the accusation at me disappeared the second I mentioned it. That’s what happens when the word is thrown around so casually that it stops meaning anything.
