Andorra only lost 1-0 to England, so clearly they are no mugs.

People thinking we should beat Andorra every time, would also expect our senior men to lose to Hungary and Portugal, but that didn't happen either. Conversely, we drew with Slovakia who have beaten everyone bar England, so, rather like the seniors, you only get the see the lie of the land at the end of the campaign, but by all means go diving in on the manager when most people on here couldn't even name the starting XI. I admit that I only know the players at "bigger" clubs and, of course, Carrigaline's finest!

    It’s Andorra. It was a 4-0 thrashing v Andorra.

I recall questioning Crawford’s management of the U21s before on here and was rounded on with a stout defence on his behalf. Back then I was critical of the style of play. For me practical football is important especially at senior level but for underage players and teams I felt it was also important for development of players and players expressing themselves to build confidence. The stout defence put up on Jim Crawford’s behalf at the time was that the results were deemed respectable. 4-0 loss to Andorra ain’t respectable.

    Conflicting reports about the finals.

Will the winner of Pot 2 Vs Pot 3 have to play a winner from Pot 1 Vs Pot 4?

    Or is it open?

My bet is the former because it is uefa

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,114 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

yes they will. The whole idea is for a group of teams from the 4 pots play off against each other.

Nice little reminder of the weekend that was..

So its neither of what I said. and the winner of Pot 2 Vs Pot 3 has to play another winner from Pot 1 Vs Pot 4?

Sounds like its not in your interest to be in pot 1 then cos two teams (say Italy and Turkey) could batter their Pot 4 opponents and then have the "reward" of playing each other in the final?

Edit: Nvm. misunderstood you. So its essentially seeded twice

    Think the edit addresses.

The reward for winning our pot 2 game will likely be a pot 1 team

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,826 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

    Ah yeah it does.

Yep we'll have to beat a Pot 1 team to make it, unless Sweden do something to cause an upset.

yes and that final has a 50/50 shot of being at home. Well find out in Thursday’s draw if the possible final is at the Aviva or not

Envious of the Scots last night. They played rubbish for 99% of the game but great celebrations in the end because there was something to celebrate - qualifying.

Meanwhile we are running around like headless chickens celebrating qualifying for a two game playoff we have little chance in.

Let's be honest, it's kind of embarrassing, cringey at best.

We've had nothing to celebrate since 2016 really so it's pent up energy being released.

Also the fact we were down and out not so long ago so it was unexpected. Also we almost never beat teams above us. We normally grind out a 1-1 draw.

The Kenny era was particularly depressing also.

But yeah reaching playoffs used to be the minimum we'd expect.

Give over will you. A last minute winner after coming from behind twice when only three games ago we were 4th in the group and then scraped past Armenia at home. Even Fr Stone would crack a smile after the last few days ffs. God forbid some people enjoy the dramatic win which keeps qualifying alive when last month people were moaning that the campaign was as good as over after three games.

    Always the miseryguts.

Understand what is being celebrated first maybe?

Before Portugal we thought we were out. From that point the achievement has been massive and well worthy of the celebrations.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,857 ✭✭✭✭noodler

    The post is ridiculous.

If you can't celebrate milestones then what is the point? Did you begrudge the team celebrating either of the last two wins?

We have finished second in a group for the first time since 2017.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,685 ✭✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Teams have to play a set number of games each year. If the two losers didn't play they'd have to organise friendlies so it's just easier to do it this way. Same happened in 2020 but we ended up playing England instead because the game against Bosnia couldn't go ahead and England had a friendly against NZ that didn't go ahead I believe because of COVID.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,016 ✭✭✭DellyBelly

Ah come on. We have had very little to celebrate these last few years. We had to endure the Kenny era and now that we have come through the other side of that we are seeing some glimmers that this team can actually get results against good sides..I think there was a lot of built up frustration being released this weekend

    Future Kermit - July 18th 2026.

"We beat no-marks Panama and Australia in the group, scraped home against Canada in the L32, needed an own-goal to get past Morocco and then won penalty shootouts in the QF/SF after being totally outplayed. If we don't win this final tomorrow then its all been for nothing, and a total embarrassment with the fans cheering"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,693 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

I really hope he doesn't predict us winning. Kermits predictions in the past have been so woefully wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,533 ✭✭✭Elmer Blooker

Maybe your right and the celebrations were a bit over the top but remember it was only a few weeks ago we were facing the humiliation of finishing bottom of the group behind Armenia.
In September I thought it would be years before we even got a sniff of a play-off.

It’s good to be back to where we feel we belong which is second place in a qualifying group, we only ever topped a group once before courtesy of Gary Mackay so second place is about our level.

What do you want people to do? Start crying? Pretend nothing happened? Not celebrating at all?

Its still going be so tough to qualify 100%.

I don't think people are getting carried away. We are still odds against to qualify. Its just nice to have bit of hope.

And for that group of players especially, my god there's been no more continuously beaten down Irish side in decades. Imagine the catharsis of just achieving somethinganything!… after entire international careers filled with unrelenting disappointment to date.

And to do it by doing all the stuff we supposedly never do — winning away to a higher ranked side, scoring 3 goals! And off the back of the Portugal game… if ya can't allow yourself to be overwhelmed by emotion this week, then what's the point of any of it.

England's U17 lost 4-0 to Austria. These things happen at underage.

Startlingly similar, both countries start with the letter A, have snow covered mountains and the average male height is identical at 1.78m

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,471 ✭✭✭jacool

    True!

Also, they start, and end with A, and have 7 letters.

. . . . . and their opponents are all ending up looking like clones who have been to Turkey, but not for the kebabs!

Ah its the same energy as the rugby team celebrating and doing parades around the pitch after beating SA in the pools at the WC in 23…we are a small country with a small mindset…just the way it is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,658 ✭✭✭MayoSalmon

16/17 year olds are a bit different to 20/21 year olds

The Spanish and the Dutch didnt even qualify…that doesnt happen at the older age groups

I really didn’t think anyone could find something to be miserable about after the best week in Irish football in years, but here we are.

The last week has been incredible considering the general apathy towards the national team. Beating the team ranked 5th in the world 2-0 before following it up with a must-win away game where we needed to score 3 goals and we actually did? Incredible stuff.

It’s so different to what we’re used to, too. When we have beaten a higher ranked team in the recent past it’s usually down to a huge defensive performance where we’ve managed to nick the one chance and hold on for dear life. Winning 2 games while scoring 5 goals home and away against higher seeds simply unheard of.

Most of the debate around Mick/Kenny is around whether they had the ability to get the most out of the team and you’d have to say they both fell short for different reasons. We aren’t perfect by any means but watching us compete in a fairly constructive manner over the last week has been a joy. If that’s not worth celebrating, I don’t know what is.

Yup U21s is that little bit more than just a development team. Your U19s and below are full on development teams. Heck you don't even have to be Irish to play in some of the games whereas come U21s things change and it starts to get more competitive. With teams having players who play regularly at senior level with clubs.

I think Crawford has done well overall. 2021 I wouldn't count as he took over with three games to go and lost our best players when Kenny got promoted. 2023 got into the playoffs but under performed as Israel were nothing special. They were there for the taking but Crawfords biggest flaw is he's too pragmatic at times. 2025 I believe refereeing decisions in both games against Norway cost us automatic qualification even as Italy only finished top by 3pts with Norway beating us to 2nd on H2H.

This is his third full campaign and not just because of last night but you'd hope that the FAI do consider a fresh start with underage teams. Mahon will be with the U19s ten years next April and similar O'Brien will have ten years as U17s manager next April too.
