It's a shocking indictment of timelines here that that project was flagged in a 2017 submission by DTTAS as being of utmost priority for funding as the road was on the verge of collapse, and it took 7.5 years for it to get to construction.
I think its 4.3 km of new road at Latteragh.
Its very much overdue - I had no idea of potential collapse. A horrible narrow bit of extremely bendy road, that basically hugs the edge of the river through its meanders.
There are two crossings of the river in the plans within a few hundred meters, thats how meandery it is.
The one regret is that the R498/ToomevaraRoad junction is not being looked at. Its just a flat junction, with no middle bit for a car to sit in whist waiting to turn.
Does anyone hear have any information on the current status of the new bridge in Ennistymon in Co. Clare? Inner relief road. Blakes corner was to be demolished and a new bridge built 100 metres South of the existing bridge.
Apparently owners of the properties straight across from the existing bridge are trying every legal action possible to prevent the CPOs.
Ya I remember reading about a florist who was objecting to the CPO. I just wondered had their been any movement on it since. Still in the courts so based on that. Would be great to see it built

3.35km, estimated value of 19.4m euro.
Land owners received notification today that the Advance Works Contract for site clearance and fencing of lands on the N17 Milltown to Gortnagunned realignment scheme has been awarded and these works are due to commence next Mon 29th Sept and last approximately 7 weeks. Great to see works will finally start on the ground approximately 8 years since the scheme was first proposed! Sadly it comes too late for a local young lad involved in fatal collision just last Friday on this stretch
No movement on Latteragh when I drove through yesterday.
Not much of an update but this small snippet was in the Nenagh Guardian this week.
You would think after two decades there would be even the illusion of urgency just to get construction started.
You'd think so. Nothing anyway when I drove through yesterday either.
The whole of that road should be improved…. 2+2 from the M8 junction bypassing Thurles North South. A 2+1 then right to Nenagh would be required from the traffic levels I reckon.
Ya totally, the R498 should really be upgraded and become an N road. Possibly an extension of the N75 from an upgraded Junction 5 of the M8 to the M7 bypassing Thurles to the Northeast, then on through Borrisoleigh and onto Junction 25 of the M7.
That would make the most sense to me anyway. It would depend really on what way Thurles is going to be bypassed. If to the West then possibly a new N number road coming off the N62 would make more sense.
Still nothing at Latteragh when I drove through about a week ago..
Also nothing at the N63 Abbeyknockmoy bridge. I thought that had been signed and sealed.
Advance works including archaelogical investigations ongoing on the N63 Liss-Abbey atm

Can’t open that. What does it say?
One regional road project that is under construction is the R313 realignment at Glencastle near Belmullet. Google Street View shows this is well underway, see comparison from 2 months ago and 2019.
Dark blue or orange ftw
Agreed! Or a 2+2 perhaps bypassing the entire of Bandon and not this tack-on. I can dream though….
Bandon relief road has its own thread lads, please continue discussion there.
I came across a section of road freshly fenced off for improvement works. It wasn't a road I was familar with but it was just north of Milltown on the N17 so I think it's this scheme that's progressing "Milltown - Gortnagunned" The Galway roads site for it are not working but I did find this report from 2021 on it.
https://www.gaillimh.ie/sites/default/files/2025-06/N17%20Milltown%20to%20Gortnagunned%20-%20Design%20Report_0.pdf
Map above from the linked report.
A little bit of work started at Latteragh as of Friday.
Site compound being built on the western end of the scheme.
Speed limit reductions in place (ignored by all), signs everywhere and a little bit of tractoring has been done in the scheme as well as a few more fences.
Two portable toilets delivered.
Public Consultation 2 (Options Selection) for Carlow Southern Relief Road now open:
Public Consultation 2 - Carlow Southern Relief Road (CSRR)
This would give them the opportunity to renumber N80 as it passes Carlow using the new road.
I was thinking the same - it looks shorter and obviously a hell of a lot less congested - they already did a small extension from the Castlecomer roundabout to the next a few years back so that would tie in nicely. Isn’t there a road going nowhere also already built that would feed into this route too.
The big cost will be bridging the Barrow.
This has been approved by ACP (although CCC not giving much away with the notice!);
Site clearance work ongoing at Latteragh now and some basic digging being done. Site compound constructed. Plenty of portaloos too.
