From a quick Google -
" Yes, liquid nitrogen can cause significant skin damage, including severe frostbite, burns, and blistering, within seconds of contact."
.
Good practice makes perfect, an AI tech could do 10-20 cows a day, some farms have only 10-20 cows.
The conception rate to first serve would be around 80%. I'm serving 30-35 cows each year. I vaccinate for lepto & give a fertility bolus. But in my opinion vaccinating for lepto was a game changer around here.
Your not putting liquid nitrogen under your arm your putting the straw under it.
I remember when I was considering doing the course first, the guy who used to top up my pot with nitrogen said it wouldn't work that I hadn't enough cows to keep up the practice on. But I have never had a problem serving cows & I have a higher conception rate the any of the AI men I used. I think a lot of it is also down to timing. Don't over think the job it's pretty simple really once you get one you will get them all.
Can you check for Lepto or do you just vaccinate?
What fertility bolus do you use?
I've only 10-12 here. I agree that timing could be a big part of the issue as I'm at the mercy of the AI tech.
Not sure of the financials of DIY for such a small number.
I know what your saying about the small numbers, but I do know one or two guys around me doing it with them numbers. The financials might not stack up but there's great satisfaction in getting your own cows in calf.
You can blood test for lepto.
The bolus I use is oligovet reproduction bolus.
I can't find the composition of that bolus. Do you have any info on it?
I'll have a look one of the days.
had a cow throw a calf during the week so got metricure for her. Ai man was here this morning said it was abit soon to give it to her. Anyone how when is the correct time to administer this ?
14 days after I believe
cheers for that. There’s no discharge coming from her when she’s lying down which is a good thing. Got some pen strip for her but have hers test this week will administer after this.
Does she need antibiotics?
any of you men that that your own ai. I had a heifer a bulling yesterday morning she was bulling right up until dinner time anyway. I AI’ed her this morning as ai man is not out in the evenings. When she was AI’ed a small bit of blood came out of her was she too late AI’ed now? And won’t hold? Or is it just opening a heifer for the first time?
IIt would normally be early for blood, but I've seen them pass blood after ai and still hold.
so it wouldn’t necessarily mean anything then. Il know in 3weeks anyway I suppose. I used an expensive straw so hopefully it’s not wasted.
Does the AI company fill your flask? I thought, by law, you had to have the course done and cert before they'd sell you straws
I've it a few years and never an issue. I've had straws delivered from nearly all the companies in Ireland too & tank filled by Dovea.
I'll be doing the course next year anyway
i used estramate on few heifers, first shot Wednesday 27th Nov, i didn't notice any of them in heat coming in heat from Fri to Sun, so going to go with the two shot protocol, which is 11 days after, that would be sun 8th, would there be any issue doing them sat evening? that's not the full 11 days but close to it!
should be ok. Then do u AI them at a fixed time?
I did that few months ago but half of them didn't go in calf, did 10, 5 went in calf
that’s not a bad hit from just estramate. If you used a prid Ud be happy to get 7-8 out of 10
All heifers and there might have been two repeats in that
Did the Estrumate one year with heifers. On Vet's advice, think the second shot was 7 days later. I must check the records.
I’m thinking of trying a shot of estrumate(prostaglandin) with a group of older cows 3 weeks before breeding starts. Observe their heats then first time AI with a shot of GnRH when they repeat 18-24 days later.
It would end up a good bit cheaper than a sync program and be easier dealing with older cows who aren’t cooperative with 3-4 runs up a crush over the 10 days.
Does anyone have a link to info on the 2 shot estrumate protocol?
The standard dosage for Estrumate (cloprostenol) in cattle is 2 mL administered by intramuscular (IM) injection. The recommended interval for a repeat injection in a double-injection synchronization program is 11 days
Iv eight AIed now after doing the course in September. Iv 3 over 30 days so hopefully all good. One repeat bit I knew I didn't get her the first time. Did 2 this morning. An older cow no bother. First calver I dont think I got her. Youd have more respect for the boys doing it full time. Arm was hanging off me just doing 2 in a row!
Do you only prepare for AI 21 days after the 2nd injection?
