EV grant question - Wrong Pricing, Mistake or Everything is fine?

I bought a car which was priced at about 60K and opted of extras (color, seats factory fitted and listed on site) worth about 2K complimentary and I was offered about 2K as cash discount.

I did check with dealer about the SEAI grant eligibility as total cost was above 60K for Car + Extras. Dealer said car is eligible for the SEAI grant.

Car invoice has no mention of any extras. However, color/seats are extra money as per site and product catalogue.

I was speaking to someone recently and he was denied any extras by the other dealer as prices with extra would have gone in excess of 60K and made him ineligible for the grant. Hence, he bought the car without any extras and was unhappy about this inconsistent approach amongst dealers.

I do not want to be involved with anything against the law.

Question are :

What is price for SEAI grant :

a) 60 K + 2K for extra = 62K and hence ineligible

b) 60 + 2K for extra minus cash discount = 60K and hence eligible.

2. If it is ineligible, who is responsible - Dealer or I to now play to SEAI. I had confirmed the dealer that car is eligible for grant.

3. What will be consequences if it is found out in say an Audit by SEAI at a later date?

Shall I self report it to SEAI?

White car worth 59k is grant eligible. Change the colour for 2k and it is not eligible.

Back when I was ordering my EV, I could choose only 1 extra on the base model, or I wouldn't get the grant.

Thanks for a prompt response. Do you think dealer could have adjusted extras agains cash discount and hence made it look eligible Or did not mention it on invoice and possibly underreported the price to claim it.

What should I do now? It will be now to pay back SEAI grant as I was told car is within grant threshold.

I'd let the dealer deal with the grant. All that matters to you is the price you pay. You're not making any declaration, the dealer is.

Appreciate the clarity. Dealer if I remember filed the grant and I just signed some online thing, if I recall.

Wouldn't it be true that you can't actually pay any amount between 56500 and 60000 for a full EV?

If you pay 56500 it means car was 60000 and you got the grant applied

If you pay 57000 the car was 60500 and is grant ineligible so you can't actually ever be charged 57000?

Same for 58, 59k and the next price up for a full EV from paying 56.5k is actually 60,001 ?

I did not pay amount > 56500. as there was a cash discount. It was a case of Cash discount covering the extras. I do not want to be a part of a wrong SEAI claim. Hence, asked this question.

However, it seems Car price about 59990 + 2K extra meant, SEAI grant was not eligible. That is why dealer did not add extra on the invoice? Odd to see a dealer indulging in such things, unless it was a mistake on their part. I do not want a clawback at a later stage.

if there were extras…..they applied a discount…surely the price you paid is the important thing not the perceived value of extras that were thrown in?

if you tell us what car you bought and the extras I’m sure we can work this out for you.

Also if you have already taken delivery of the car and paid for it you’re not on the hook for anything extra.

The dealer gets the seai money.

I wouldn’t worry about it. It wouldn’t be unusual to find the dealer “adjusted” the paperwork to secure the grant. If SEAI decide at some point to have an issue with it, they’ll have to take it up with said dealer.

There's a key point here that is important, when buying a car from a dealership your contract of sale is with the dealership

While the manufacturer sets a guide price, the final price is up to the dealership. They effectively buy the car from the manufacturer and sell it on, their franchise agreement guarantees them a certain wholesale price and the rest is up to them

There really isn't anything stopping a dealership from offering a €20k discount except that this will come from their profits. Similarly nothing stops the dealership from raising the price if they want to and unfortunately we've seen instances of this

The threshold for the grant is based on the final sale price and not the guide price from the manufacturer. If the dealership decides to apply a discount to get under the threshold and get an easier sale then that's on them and not the customer

As the OP mentioned, they're basically choosing to sell something with a list price of €62k for €60k and avail of the grant which they passed onto the customer. This has potentially cost the dealership €2k of their own profits, which they probably were fine doing for the easier sale

As for not showing the extras on the invoice, this is something annoying but I'm not at all surprised by it. It's probably a way to ensure the paperwork wasn't flagged by SEAI and the grant application delayed. It would probably still have been paid out in the end but the dealership wanted to avoid any delays

There's an argument there whether an item given as a freebie should be on the invoice or not, personally I think it should but others may have different perspectives

I don't think you understood the explanation given above.

Dealers are free to charge what they liked for a vehicle - above or below the grant threshold. There was no criminality or even ethical debate with this.
