New thread as the last thread seems to be broken.
We do have a habit of concerding first. Could see it being 2-1.
I've never seen a nation revel so much in being angry. They deserve a sh*t team to be honest. But they have a good one.
Best I heard was people giving out about how deep we were! Not sure there was that much choice when we were penned in like that! A lot of people have (obviously) never played and just don’t understand the game so I find it’s best not to get too worked up!
We had a plan on Saturday, and played with passion, grit and self belief, against a team far better than us, and a ref who has a crush on Portugal.
We did well. And it was a vast improvement on the Armenia match.
The match on Saturday is much more in keeping with other performances under HH.
Any win against Armenia will do.
Hungary might draw in Armenia or we might draw with Portugal.
Armenia are a good team with a lot of pace.
Ireland need a lot to go right tomorrow. If we fall asleep for any periods of the game, we'll be punished.
Were we really good. We created next to nothing.
Look i wasn't expecting to get anything but I thought we just played backs v forwards. I can't remember us stringing two decent passes together.
We were always going need bit of luck but for me I thought we were dreadful with ball.
I think our standards have dropped off cliff since Kenny got in.
it’s contextual though, right? Were we really good in the sense of two great teams playing each other, no. But in the context of expectations away from home, and the actual gap in player quality, we were really good. It was a very realistic, result oriented plan and performance, and we came so so close to nailing it.
That Leao chance on the break at the end was a clear demonstration of what would’ve happened had we actually ever left ourselves at all open - we’d have been cut to ribbons.
I think the ‘excellent’ version of that plan would’ve been to get just two or three real opportunities on the break. But really good was almost good enough.
I didn't expect us be attacking.
We were organised but that was it.
I don't expect win passing or possession stakes.
I do expect Championship players though to be able hold up ball and string few passes together.
I don't remember us having 2 decent passes together once a ounce of pressure was applied. Even players passing to teammates that were not even looking going out for throws.
The scoreline was extremely respectable but the performance wasn't. Even with us sitting back it should have been 3 or 4.
There was one spell in the 2nd half that I remember where we gained possession around halfway i think when we strung together 10-15 passes until a sloppy pass in midfield gave it away. But from the time we got possession until they regained it the Portugese pressed hard all the way up the pitch. Very different from our drop back and let them have it approach. I was sh1ttin myself that someone would cock up when the ball went all the way back, but at least they managed to work the ball out to midfield before they lost it.
I should been more clear and what you just mentioned is precisely what im referring to. Once we get to Midfield we lose it so easy.
Watch the North tonight and they be on different planet to what we do even with similar opposition
Yeah, that was a lovely prolonged spell of passing, working it round the pitch quickly and sharply - the bad touch that eventually lost possession was from Johnston, his first after coming off the bench. Tbh at times I thought we were a lot better at that aspect of the game than we've been for a long time. We didn't resort to as many hoofs up the pitch to no-one as we have in the past.
You can thank Stephen Kenny for that.
Christ
Not seeing this "different planet" play from the North so far and they're at home and down 0-1.
I can somewhat see what poster was referring to.. definitely appear to play with more ambition anyway
They're at home against what is probably the worst German side I've ever seen. Germany leading for most of the game too, if NIre had something to hold on to it would be a different story. All they have is lumping set pieces into the box.
Terrible German side alright.
But you must be watching a different game if you really see nothing but lumping set pieces in to the box.
Anyway this is the Republic of Ireland thread. Keep this thread for our own dross.
They could nick something here
thankfully they didnt
Always the possibility Hungary get something in Portugal.
Say again?
Lots of possibilities.
If you think that performance was on par than what we watched Saturday your not being honest.
Just look at stats alone. North deserved point and bar one big one on one miss from Germany they were well worth a result.
We are celebrating 10 or 15 passes that results in nothing, they had chances and had Germany in back foot at times.
North getting results, we are celebrating 10 passes around the back. The Kenny era has lower our standards beyond belief and many buy into it seems.
Michael O’Neill is a good manager and gets the best out of what he’s got, we haven’t had a good manager since the other M O’Neill.
You’re going on as if Germany are still a big football power which they aren’t - they lost to Slovakia. Other than a quarter final appearance as host nation at Euro ‘22 their record in recent tournaments has been poor, eliminations at group stage and last 16 has been the best they could manage. Since winning the WC in ‘14 and semi finalists at Euro ‘16 it’s been all downhill.
A squad worth 750million.
Underachiever but to say they ain't big football power is way off mark
there goes David Brent Stephen Kenny, I should really remember to thank him.
like Irish fans are finding out that Seamus Coleman is still one of our best players, I’d say there’s a fair chance they find out that Josh Cullen is not easily replaceable tonight. Molumby as the main holding mid scares me.
They had to because they went 1 down early.
As for the rose tinted on here. Any result away to Portugal or a similar level was a big deal under Jack and Mick too. Both would have taken the draw.
Oh when does value equal talent?
