Shopping centre to introduce paid parking next year
If they want to encourage more to use public transport to visit the SC, they probably should've waited until the Bus Connects B Spine had been implemented.
Surprised it took so long, the carparks are in need of a bad refresh, the multistory is rarely fully opened, thought would have used this as an excuse for paid parking Say a lot from Meath will think twice, when you have drogheda nearer and free parking (in most places) with a good few of the same places. Or even Newry is just over a hour or less.
would use the car park a good few times a week between myself and the wife going up to the shops there. We live near enough that we could even make 2-3 trips some days, if you get home, realise you forgot something so just head back up. We also live to far away to be walking up and back all the time and most of my own trips would be to Dunnes so I ain’t walking 3km home with the groceries.
paid parking will definitely limit the amount we will use the centre. unless Dunnes offer to cover cost if you are shopping there I will probably go elsewhere
I feel likewise and will likely avoid some visits to the centre, but I'd take it if it cuts the traffic such that time lost queuing to get in and out of the car park is reduced. Ideally they'll scale the charges to incentivise certain lengths of stay and/or arrival/departure times and offer specific customer discounts via the likes of Dunnes, the restaurants or the cinema.
Would cycling back for the things you forgot be an option? I live 2.5km away; I'd always cycle to the centre, even to pick up Boojum takeaway - no drone for me :-)
If Dunnes doesn't cover the cost where would you go? Would the extra petrol cost and time make them even?
Here's the planning application for the car park changes:

(this should be a link but there seems to be a robots.txt issue at the planning website)
you and your bloody bike 🤬
No it’s not an option cause none of my family cycle and there is no way in hell I’m parking my own bike up there to be nicked or damaged and anyway, I’m not bringing groceries home on a bike

The owners of the Blanch centre aren't trying to encourage anyone to use public transport, this is all about increasing their return on investment.
Be interesting to see how quickly the owners of Westend add parking charges as well. Without them it'll be absolute carnage in their car park. What's the story with the other retail parks where Currys and Woodies are? Do they have the same owners as the Centre?
Those are part of the Centre.
Here are drawings of the proposed carparks. Looks like over a hundred parking spaces could be lost.. and you have to pay to get to the krispy kreme drive-thru?! How's that going to work I wonder? Also what about the McDonalds car park? That will be a warzone.

It's not unreasonable to expect drivers to pay for the parking facilities they use. Those costs shouldn't be shared by those who come by bike or by bus or on foot.
Cycliest will be paying for the bike stands so, and can put a turnstile on the doors.
As a keen advocate for increasing bike usage and facilities, carparking in the centre is just as much for the benefit of the centre owners and their tenants.
It might be like Pavillions, where if you're in and out within a certain time there's no charge. It'd make sense for the places with drive throughs like McDonalds, Krispy Kreme and KFC.
You did see the link to the bike lockers, right?
No problem at all with a charge proportionate to the space used and the facilities and management resources required .
Free parking isn't free. The only question is who pays for the facility - all customers or just the customers who benefit from it.
It's paid for by the centre owners, better parking get's their centre more footfall for themselves and their tennants.
In the case of private ownership I don't think there should be any cost relative to the space used in this case (unless you park across 2 spaces, straight to prison for you)
Do you think the centre owners are paying for it out of their own pockets? 🤣🤣🤣
They just pass the costs onto tenants, who pass the costs onto ALL their customers, including those who walk, take the bus or cycle.
Didn't think I'll get the car in there.
I hope they work out some kind of deal so staff can still use it when they're working.
I suspect if there is a deal, it won't be a very good one and will basically become like another tax for some people.
People coming by car likely spend more as they are able to transport more away. Without cars and their customers trade drops off and the centre becomes less attractive.
Its fine if you live within walking/cycle distance or on a convenient bus route but I would bet you a lot of people travel quite a way or from more 'awkward' locations to spend their money in the centre - an element of these will swallow the cost but many will now look for other options.
Apparently there was a very unsatisfactory deal for staff in Liffey Valley when they introduced parking fees. Not sure what the outcome there was. I agree with above poster about short visit shoppers not paying like at Pavillions in Swords. It encourages better turnover of parking spaces and won't put off quick visit shoppers.
That's not a safe assumption.
That's for the city center, you can discount those coming by train, or luas, and a good proportion of those walking...
On a proportionate basis how does it work out?
I’d say the vast majority of staff live within cycle or walking distance and there must be 20 bus routes going through there.
I get that some staff have to start early or finish late but incentivising non-car transport should not be limited to city centre workers.
Why don't you tell me? Can't wait for all the oul tropes about bringing granny to the doctor while collecting the new 56" TV.
