it’s unfortunately the way it is when it comes to difficult situations
Ok so we have two announcements, Abtran are closing their Sligo office and moving their employees to remote working. Not surprised as they have an ongoing lawsuit regarding their practices and people I know have said they aren’t really a great company to work with.
Second Eagles Flying are shutting their doors. Sad to see this go as I’ve had memories going there with family and school trips. It’s also a blow on our tourism sector as Ireland has a lot of wildlife so not sure what’s going to happen to the birds and animals there.
Not really a surprise with either.
Lother had retired from Eagles Flying some years ago, his staff took over the ownership/running of the business but Covid and downturn in visitor numbers made it unviable.
Abtran are not laying off staff (for now) they are online based so do not need a physical office. Good news for staff who want remote working, it will make no difference to the local economy as those that live here continue to have their jobs, and new hires would be remote working, even if the office had stayed open.
This is the flip-side of the clamour for remote working. Hopefully posters don’t start the usual twaddle I read on other forums about how sad it is to see so many empty shops and closed office buildings, while ordering from Amazon/ASOS and only applying for remote working jobs.
Miss Suzy’s in Castle Street has been closed for a good while. Are they gone?
They had a fire in their kitchen in the early hours of a Monday( I think) morning, so closed because of that. Haven't heard anything about it being permanent.
would it not be an idea to change the negative title of this thread from 2008, to say “Retail outlets in Sligo Town - Updates” ? Otherwise is it not a self fulfilling prophecy? Just saying……
There's a separate thread for new shops/businesses opening so a generic title with 'updates' would not be ideal unless we were to merge the two discussions.
It's fine the way it is.
Jack and Jones in Johnston Court/The Canopy closing on May 30th, 70% off till then.

Dealz in the Quayside are closing in July, was in yesterday and noticed a lot of bare shelves.Staff are being transferred to the unit in Cleveragh Retail Park, according to the chap who served me!
Makes sense.. everything was 50% off when I was in at weekend.
I am never too sure about that cleveragh retail park, its in a bit of an odd place and a strange retail park . I dont know how the other Dealz/pep and co are getting on there, alright I suppose, and Mr Price has been there years too , but i'd say the lead up to Quayside SC was great footfall there. glad the staff are being transferred and not loosing their jobs
Expect many more Dealz stores to be closed. Losing money heavily both in UK (pound land) and here.
It's about to be sold (ironically for £1) to a recovery specialist and they expect about 200 of their 800+ stores to be closed.
Flynns shop closing in the next couple of weeks after 82 years serving the village of Collooney.
I noticed that the large barbers in The Canopy near to the Ikea unit looks closed down. It was closed earlier today and there is no nameplate on the front. Then again, I don't remember if there was a name there before, lol. Is it gone or just closed on Mondays.
It has been closed for some time!!
Thanks @prodsc I hadn't been in The Canopy for a good while so I'm not surprised!
I may be way behind the times (again) but I noticed today that Lifestyle Sports in Quayside is gone. It was never a veey good branch to be honest not surprised its gone
Not a store but does anyone know are LiveTiles the tech company still in Sligo? They had an office in the building the Foleys pub side of the Courthouse. It has a glass door and they were upstairs, I see a "to let" sign in there now.
From a quick Google they were taken over by a company called Omnia in summer 2024. Did they quietly exit Sligo? Perhaps gone remote or moved elsewhere in town?
I'd say probably gone remote for the workers still in Sligo. I had a look at their Linkedin page and there are a few people listed as employees who I have a mutual Sligo connection with so I am assuming that these are locals. Sligo not listed in their 13 city locations for Omnia though
afaik they don't exist in Sligo anymore
Mcdermotts Gift Shop on O'Connell street is set to close its doors, walked past it on Friday, everything was marked down as low as 70%. Its a real shame, McDermotts has been there for over 30 years….
yes moved here in 90's and McDermotts gifts shop was there at that little arcade bit. i'd have to say I dont think I had never ever been in there , but then again it wouldnt have been my kind of shop to shop in anyway. I hope the owner has a happy and healthy retirement
Claire's Accessories in Johnston Court closing.

Closed in the Erneside in Enniskillen as well.
Walked past The Pod coffee shop on Wine St this afternoon, door was closed, not sure if it’s temporary. Also see some activity where Game Stop used to be but haven’t heard what is opening there.
Is Michael Quirke still.operating?
The past few times I have been in Sligo the shutters were down
Someone asked on Facebook a while ago and his sister answered to say that he had a procedure done a couple of months ago and is recovering from that. So hopefully he might open again when he feels up to it.
Cash Savers are set to close at the end of this month along with Yellow Bird Bakery. The baker is looking for a a commercial kitchen space anywhere in Sligo so hopefully we will see a new business happening again in the near future!

if that Source building was still going at the bottom of Harmony hill where source sligo was that had a commercial kitchen upstairs. might have been ideal. - the downstairs now is some insurance place I think now
