It was more than 'hurty words' third parties brought in. It was plastered everywhere by cowardly bots in box rooms and other nobodys who'd shít themselves alone in a dark room.

Dead right to call out anonymous cowards.

I wouldn't be voting for Gavin myself but he's dead right here.

He has jumped into bed with FF. He will have the brass neck to hang on in the race unless they find a body buried out his back garden

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

the “allegations” were originally posted a number of years ago I believe - they’re pretty sick given the assumption is they’re false and impact a lot of people than just Gavin - they’re more than just “hurty” words-

No point in boycotting an election, as someone is going to win regardless, you might as well have your say.

However doing your best to make sure local councillors who voted against allowing further candidates to be on the ballot are not returned in the next local elections should be the goal.

Also if they are canvasing at any stage, or representing themselves in capacity as a councillor (as opposed to their private life), then giving them a right grilling for their choices is only fair.

Catherine Connolly was incredibly weak and evasive on Morning Ireland just now. The interview wasn't tough or anything - she was just Meh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,617 ✭✭✭✭kneemos

Put a few bob on Humphreys., she's the only viable option.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,079 ✭✭✭Comhrá

Just heard that interview. She was very defensive and evasive throughout. Didn't sound in any way convincing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 268 ✭✭BestWestern

The questions asked were the obvious ones, and she was totally unwilling to answer them.

    Hamas, Russia, Northern Ireland.

The northern Ireland answer was so weak it became laughable. She's been to northern Ireland a lot of times it seems. She ran a marathon.

Was waiting for to mention some of her best friends are from northern Ireland.

I've come into this election with an open mind for everyone (except bertie) but Connolly has really gone down in my expectations.

Shevseemed awfully on the clip from yesterday’s BBC interview shown on 6-1. Very dithery and absolutely not sounding like statesperson. I think the wheels are coming off the cart for her.

I already did. My only 2 bets are on Gavin and HH. Got them both very early. 25/1 for Jim. I never thought Connolly would win and I think she is better off in the Dail. I hope Steen doesn't get on the ballot because it could complicate the running.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

She's a terrible option, doesn't look or sound like a president. Not to mention her very questionable history of supporting dictatorships. SF will absolutely regret supporting her as will the SD.

Sometimes she looks and sounds like she has the gravatass, that thoughtful look from a wiser older candidate, not in the first flush of youth.

Then she speaks, and there's nothing profound or deep, just the well rehearsed wishes like standing with Palestine, a United Ireland and an end to poverty. Wishy washy not very wise at all.

This morning she was saying that an election 20 years ago gave Hamas legitimacy to run Palestine. What nonsense.

I would imagine the patriots and facebook grannies etc would all be in favour of Steen if she gets the nod? Bring back real Catholic ireland etc. If she mentioned immigration I think she could win, or am i being ridiculous? given the other candidates are likely to be really uninspiring this one could bring out a large section of society to vote for her.

Won't vote for her but would like to see her getting a nomination.

It's not all that often that I agree with Fintan O'Toole, but I fully agree with his view that the Irish socially conservative voice should be represented on the ballot paper.

I went as far as e-mailing one of my local TDs (Mick Collins) and asked him to give her a nomination - I pointed out that since both of his his constituency colleagues have backed someone [Holly Cairns —> Connolly and Chris O'Sullivan —> Biggles], he really needed to get off the fence too!

She is the Peter Casey candidate of this election but way more refined and an excellent debater. The other 3 candidates don't seem great when questioned. Plus she isnt obsessed about foreign wars like the left.

So who knows. If Casey could get 23% she could do even better.

I agree. If Maria Steen gets on the ballot and runs a clever campaign she can win. She will get a huge portion of conservative votes along with massive support from those looking to protest the establishment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,195 ✭✭✭✭blanch152

She can't win, there isn't enough support, but she could certainly come third, given the car crash nature of Catherine Connolly's campaign, and possibly even second, if one of the government candidates moves well ahead of the other.

Doesn't make any difference though, she can't do anything except make the odd speech that nobody will pay any heed to.

These presidents need to resigned in,keep the their mouths shut and do the job.

I dunno. I think she has a fighting chance. 38% voted against the SSM referendum in 2015 and 34% voted against the abortion referendum. I can't imagine those voters have changed their position. Those votes are Maria Steens if she is on the Ballot along with a sizeable protest vote against FG & FF. Transfers could be her achilles heel but I think if she gets on the ballot she will poll really well on 1st preference votes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,514 ✭✭✭✭Thelonious Monk

You'd have your gavin peppers and malachy steensons getting people who never usually vote out for this one. social media, musk, who knows. will be interesting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,457 ✭✭✭MacDanger

I don't think so - with a good campaign, she could top the poll or come close to it but I don't think she'd pick up enough 2nd/3rd preferences to see her over the line

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,135 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

Steen deserves to be on the ballot, it's an absolute joke that the establishment political parties are being allowed to decide who is on the ballot. I understand we can't have any eejet running but Steen is clearly not a joke candidate and she represents enough people in Ireland to deserve to be given a chance

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,139 ✭✭✭W123-80's

Agreed. 2nd & 3rd preferences will be problematic for her

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,195 ✭✭✭✭blanch152

Many of those 38% and 34% are staunch FF and FG voters who will vote one way in a referendum and back to a party in a general or Presidential election. Another tranche of those votes includes that protest vote who vote no to any referendum as a protest, which then limits the upside of the additional protest vote.

    She is also transfer toxic.

Ultimately, 30% (which is her maximum vote) could be enough for second place if one of the government candidates goes over 40%. A backlash could see her in single digits and bottom of the pile.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,139 ✭✭✭W123-80's

I would fully expect Musk to get involved. He has form for stirring the pot here and in the UK

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,139 ✭✭✭W123-80's

Ya, fair point. Some of the 38% and 34% will probably vote along party lines.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,117 ✭✭✭StormForce13

Nonsense indeed. But it's also the kind of stuff that appeals to the demographic that she's targeting.

There's not really much point in her talking intelligently about Hamas to that quartile!

As far as I'm concerned FF and FG are blocking anyone else from the ballot because they know their own candidates are piss poor. Absolutely stinks, the hard left vote is being represented in this election so why shouldn't the strong conservative vote be given the same right.
