Window hinge replacement

Hi,

I have two windows in my top floor apartment that aren’t closing properly and as a result are letting in cold air. I live there solo so not overly concerned but I imagine as winter creeps in it will get very cold. The heaters are archaic storage heaters which may or may not work to make matters worse.

I was looking at replacing the (top opening )hinges, got a few preliminary quotes and I think I’d be looking at 300+ euros for 4 hinges. I was thinking of doing it myself given the cost but if someone would know anyone that would do it then happy to hear suggestions.

Hi - as this is an apartment and the windows likely open into a public area or directly over other people's property then you should engage the landlord and their maintenance company to carry out the repairs. Was it though them that you obtained the quote for the repairs already?

What dimensions and material are your windows? For reference my upstairs windows are 112x63 double glazed UPVC windows and they weigh 17.7kg. Not heavy but they're an awkward lift and often with near full outstretched arms making them that bit heavier.

The hinges themselves aren't that expensive, I got like replacement NICO 16" hinges online for €16 per pair and replaced one upstairs window today with a couple more to do tomorrow. I'm replacing the seals also (screwfix the most reasonable I've found) and while they weren't bad the windows themselves are over 20 years old so they're compressed and weathered in places and it's an easier job with the window removed.

€300+ for two windows is a lot of money but it is possible DIY provided your windows aren't too much bigger/heavier. If going the DIY route I'd advise getting a good vacuum suction cup to make life easier as it's difficult enough to seat the hinges into the track in the frame both when removing and reinstalling.

Mine are living room windows, quite large, about 1m length (top to bottom) and 60cm wide. The previous owner did absolutely nothing with the place and I’ve been renovating it since I bought it. Fixing windows are next on my list as the cold weather necessitates the same. The windows in the spare bedroom will definitely need work as well, likely a new pane and frame replacement. Property is a headache, lol. If anyone knows of someone handy in the Beaumont Dublin area let me know
