All brake discs warped

Car failed the nct on insufficient contact between pad and disc, on all four corners

Nct lad said they were all warped.

just wondering if this could be from the car being parked up or anything like that? I know you can warp them from going into water when the discs are hot.. could that be it?

IIts a new to me car, first nct I've put it through. Failed on coil spring as well. And tyre valves faulty...super

I know it's a bit how long is a piece of string but for a 2012 peugeot 3008, was wondering would anyone here hazard a guess at a ball park figure to get discs and pads on all done?

Cheapest end of the scale in terms of parts I'm afraid.

They can warp when the tyre shop puts wheels back on with a 1300nm impact gun at max setting and then swing off the nuts with a breaker bar afterwards.

Most wheels are in the 110-140nm range.

Discs and pads on all 4 corners at a garage you're talking in the €450-€550 range

So do coil springs have to be replaced in pairs? I think they do but I just don't deal with this stuff often enough and lads don't want to be explaining things to me when I deal with them so it's hard to learn anything.

How much for those then do ye think?

Also what's the story with damaged/faulty tyre valves? Like I assume you can replace the valve stem, but what price would that be Inc labour

I need to replace them soon cos of age... That was the plan before I knew about this brakes situation

Just need to pass the NCT and I can budget for tyres then, if I can get the valves sorted...

Though it seems like a waste of energy in the long run, I don't have the money for everything at once.

Coil springs dont absolutely need to be replaced in pairs. It's just best practice, I replaced only one side of the missus car last time it failed NCT and passed no bother. You can get an Apec spring on Micksgarage for like 30 quid, its labour intensive to replace though, and may need a top mount/bearing aswell if its a front spring

Tyre valves should have been replaced when tyres were replaced that's standard practice. Again happened the missus car she went on her own got 4 tyres and didn't replace any valves went back next day and he replaced all 4 free of charge was just more work for him taking tyres and wheels off all over again.

It just sounds like the discs are well overdue replacement, warping will not cause insufficient contact, thats down to them become stone rotten with rust which will also cause ovality.

At the very least please go with a midrange brand for the brakes like pagid, some of the cheap stuff out there is downright dangerous wit the friction material separating from the backing plates on the pads and the discs cracking right down the vents. Not to mention the worse performance and increased noise.

Valves are cheap unless they are part of the tpms sensor, in that case you are looking at 4 new sensors at about 100 each fitted.

good to know if it's just age. Not a great service history on it but I know it was lying up for a while as well

I'll get mid range so, I know some things it's much of a muchness, but I wanted to double check.

It seemed mad the variation in price, if all were safe that's sound... but if not I'll spend the extra on parts and hopefully the labour won't be a lot if it's not throwing up complications

Not sure I have a tpms system but will check tomorrow.

@Markus Antonius the previous owner was an older person who had an injury or something and struggled after it with driving so I can imagine that could be a possibility alright

I've only done a couple thousand miles on it and slow down through the gears as much as possible

Just because the NCT tester said that they were "warped" doesn't mean that that was the case. Did the car (comfortably) pass the brake efficiency, ovality and balance test. If it were me and I had no money I'd probably try to manually clean the discs with wire brush and sandpaper. Would take ages though. If money was very tight I'd do that and install brake pads but not discs and give the car a few gentle stops followed by hard stops before the retest.

As for what causes this insufficient contact issue, as it has happened on all 4 discs it could be that they are both old and have had insufficient use and rust has set in. if it had happened on one corner it would be more likely to be something like an issue with a caliper or pad on that corner.

Or it could be an overzealous NCT tester. This is a visual test, a matter of opinion and subjective.

I had a new 1997 Toyota Avensis and at 12,000km and 2 years the discs buckled. The warranty was 6months out but neither finglas Denis Mahoney, where I bought it from,nor Toyota HQ long mile road would pay to fix it. It turned out years later in the media Toyota had used faulty discs. Never bought a Toyota since.

I wondered about surface rust and reconditioning/wire brushing them. I wouldn't be able to do that myself, especially manually. Ill go have a look at them today cos tbh I haven't looked at them since the test I was so pissed off 🫣

Seems to all be pointing towards the car lying up idle

Hopefully I'll be able to get a hold of someone to look at it today and will know more

Re tyre valves, I've been dealing with a decent tyre guy the past 12-13 years. He does all my tyres, alignment and tracking for my 4-5 cars over the years. Whenever I have a small issue like this with failing valves or punctures, he does it for me foc. I think it's important to build a relationship with the small guys rather than buying from big online openeo/tyre leader shops

Yeah definitely agree, used to go to a lad who was very upfront and sound with me, would explain things to help me out. Franchise tyre place but he had it for years

I could swear and shake ..that picture is an exact copy of my NCT failure certificate !

It costs me €750 to replace all four of brakes disk&pads, chap from local garage said never seen similar reports but he will change so that car pass the test. Requested to get the faulty parts so can i take a photo or snap but for "health safety" reasons didn't happened.

Well just to update on this i finally got one quote.

742 for parts and 350 labour, 1092 total

That's for brakes and discs all round

Coil spring, top mount and drop link

Asked what brand he was pricing for and he said apec or brembo

Am still waiting on 2 more quotes

this is a lad who is a mechanic but is doing the job for cash at his house one of the evenings

For labour I usually pay €150 to €200 + VAT for front & rear discs & pads. I think for parts I usually pay about the same or less but this is for much smaller cars like VW Golf so not really comparable. So around €300 to €400 + VAT in total I think.

Labour price sounds fair. Rear discs have the wheel bearing integrated in them so they're probably the most expensive item, around 100 quid I reckon just for rear discs.

I just put those parts into a basket on Amazon and it came to just over €350, make of that what you will, mostly bosch/febi/borg and beck.

As for the labour charges, Jesus Wept, we should all have been mechanics if that is a fair rate - considering that he won't pay a cent of tax on that 350.

I'd say he's charging 100 euros per hour for labour there.

For comparison, in 2025, I pay 55 euros per hour at an indy garage that pays tax.

In 2019 at a different indy garage (I know there has been considerable inflation since) I paid 80 euros (2 hours x 40) labour for two new front shocks on a Megane. The process for 3008 springs and top mounts would be similar.

Probably because he's a qualified mechanic he's charging accordingly, whereas I'm only a hobbyist and might charge a friend 20 quid labour for an oil change.

Please tell me what indy garage is charging 55 euro per hour in 2025. Last time i saw those prices I'd say was before the 2008 recession.

All fwd cars with MacPherson strut assembly is the same to remove and replace springs, top mounts etc. its not just with Renault and Peugeot.

It is all very comfortable work for a qualified mechanic and as well as that he's probably getting trade rates on the parts so he's making fine money off the job.

I'm not naming that indy garage as I want to protect my own anonymity and theirs, it is a low price for 2025 but there are places charging that - outside of cities anyway.

I will name the place that charged me 2 hours x 40 euros labour to change two front shocks in 2019. That is Tractamotors, CAAAVAN town. I don't know what they charge now as I only stopped off there once as was in the area on business - but I severely doubt that they'd charge the OP what he had been quoted. And as I said, that is a legitimate business that pays tax, pays rates, has planning permission etc.

Not all cars with MacPherson Struts are the same. I looked up a video of the 3008 work before posting, the wipers and trim around them have to come off. Same on Meagne. For other cars with the struts further forward of the windscreen, that may not be necessary which would save some labour.

The dissembly of the MacPherson strut is the same in all cars, trim covers and cowling can change yes but at the suspension side its the same operation, maybe a difference in how the strut is held onto the knuckle whether it's a pinch bolt design or straight bolted to the knuckle.

Im telling you from real life experience they're all the same, not from watching a video and you're being pedantic about it.

My original point was that it's easy work for a mechanic, because they're all the same design

We're talking about labour charges here. wiper removal etc. is part of the operation, that's not pedantry. You think the OP gives a crap about this detail? He wants to know what posters thinks of quoted price, I gave my opinion that it is high and used the example of similar work on Megane Mk3 to illustrate that point.
