We've been quoted for a new combi gas boiler which retails at around €1,300 to buy the device (including VAT). The last boiler was installed a good few years ago and since then two new regulations have come into effect. Firstly the gas pipe from the meter needs to be widened to a new 3/4 inch gas pipe versus the old 1/2 inch pipe and, secondly the Gas pipes need Earth Grounding, which is essentially connecting the Gas pipes to the house earthing for electrical safety reasons. So far, out of three quotes for an installation, only one has stated that they will do they earth grounding, the other two have said it isn't really necessary, however upon checking the installation guide for the boiler and the warranty, it is required as per current standards. It is also required for house insurance to be compliant.
Anyway, how much to install a gas boiler of 25W/30W (powerful enough for a small to medium house). Well the industry average is around €3k, so they earn about €1500-€1800 for installation. Not bad for a day's work eh? But add on the work for the new gas pipe and getting the earthing done, how much more would that cost do you think, remember it'll still be a day's work, no more than that. Well, the total cost of the range of quotes is between €4,600 - €5,200 for the installation of a boiler which costs €1,300, and bear in mind that the flue is there as are the inlets etc. And for that price, they won't even provide a smart thermostat, we have to supply our own at a further cost of €200-€300.
I was just wondering if I am alone in thinking that is a rip-off, not even neurosurgeons earn that much per day! Problem is the existing boiler isn't working and I feel they are taking advantage as a result. A further issue is that most gas installers won't do the electrical grounding/earthing and then we have to pay for separate electricians, who don't seem to want to get out of bed for less than €500 per day(few hours work really), even if it is a really simple job.
