The problem isnt that i dont understand context but rather that reading between the lines can lead to different conclusions, depending on who is doing the reading and what bias they may have.
You maintain that McStay didn't agree an exit approach but none of us were in the room. How do we know what he agreed or didn't agree? The board just issued an abrupt notice of the end of his tenure. The recruitment process was long and meticulous and the board kept the public informed at different stages. But whatever process was engaged in this week was kept out of public view. Seems strange to me.
The problem is you cannot understand the context of their statement and read between the lines.
It specifically used words like "relieve" and "immediate". I posted last night that it reads like a guy who didn't want to go and this is exactly what seems to have been the case. The CB are never going to say in a statement he didn't want to go. Why do that as they want to move on ASAP. McStay should have led from that and agreed an approach to his exit from a PR side. I think he has conducted himself badly that he didn't take an agreed approach or at least propose an exit… then execute it. Lots of people jumped the gun on the CB…. wrongly this time imo
Maybe ask your new best friend if there are many or any comparable teams with Mayo's disastrous AI finals record. We are not typical and given that many of our final defeats were small margins surely it makes sense to have someone who has got over the line as manager or coach.
I don't care if it does or not.
Who do you think should be the next manager and why?
I did indeed read it although it won't linger long in the memory I'm afraid 😂😂
Did you even read my post? I gave him some credit for the good stuff. But when it came to AI final day he was always lost. A perfectly fair, accurate and factual statement.
Mayo had more than enough to win 2012, 2013 and 2021. Responsibility for wins and losses always rest with the manager.
If you bothered to read my previous post I said he was a great man for getting Mayo to finals, but once there wasn't so great.
And even those mangers were from neighbouring counties. It would probably take O'Mahoney the same time to make it to a Galway training session as a player from Connemara.
Exactly, if he coudlnt read the mood in the county and realise his time was up it shows poor judgement on his part
Like I said, there's a reason why management teams are so large these days with multiple different disciplines and huge budgets.
Dublin didn't win a 5 in a row solely because of Gavin. Same with every other intercounty setup, they assemble a talented team around them.
As for people saying an experienced inter county manager is needed, there are multiple examples of new or fairly new managers winning AIs. And you have to start somewhere.
2021 is the classic example for me. Horan with years of experience was easily outfoxed by two relative novices in the AI final.
I asked my new best friend Microsoft Copilot if an outside manager has ever won an All Ireland senior football championship.
And only three ever have.
John OMahoney - how did I forget that.
Eugene MGee, from Longford won with Offaly in 1982.
And Fr. Tom Gillooly, from Westmeath with Offaly in 1971 and 1972.
They are very few and far between.
So Horan gets none of the credit for the good stuff but all of the blame for the failures? Sounds reasonable, carry on 😂😂😂😂
The only credit I'd give Horan is that he assembled good setups including Donie Buckley and Cian O'Neill. And you could argue they were the brains behind the Mayo style of play which was tackling, turn-over and the running attack style of play.
Except when they reached AI finals and Horan was always a rabbit in headlights and will always be that way.
He's not the future of Mayo football.
Better to get the misery over early every year than on AI final day!
What successful intercounty managers would you see as figureheads? Gavin? McGuinness? McGeeney?
A lot of inter county "managers" these days are little more than figureheads, so let them assemble a squad behind them.
I'd have either over most of the others such as Ray Dempsey, McConville, Horan, etc none of who are credible names for one reason or another.
Keegan and O'Shea at least are reasonably up to date with the demands of modern inter county.
Its not an appealing job at the minute despite what people think as its a team in transition. I don't believe someone from outside the county commuting long distances is the answer either, at most they'd want to be living in Connacht. You'd want someone attending club games, minor games, etc to see talent coming through.
Lee is a fine man to be talking, should still be playing. If Kevin McStay was delusional enough to not resign then he brought it on himself
that snake DB was on about eating its own tail has now been fully devoured. RIP Mayo GAA
I think no matter what dressingroom he went into Gavin would get full respect.
I don't think theres a chance he'd come but I think he would be brilliant
these guys see themselves as winners and would probably look at it as somewhere to prove they're the best
But would the Mayo players buy what he is selling?
That's part of the problem here, no matter who has been at the helm they have failed to get total and utter by in from the players the way McGuiness was able to (admittedly just once so far) in 2012.
All they need is that total and utter by in just once.
The closest they got to that was with Horan, but it was still not enough.
I'd love to pick the brain of one of the Horan era players and find out what exactly they thought of him and why exactly they responded to him the way they did.
Because I knew Horan myself years ago and would love to hear what they thought of him.
But back to Gavin, what makes you think they will respond to some outsider like Gavin just down to prove he could do it with someone other than Dublin?
Aiden O'Shea or Lee Keegan? Ah stop! Aiden hasn't retired yet and I don't think its a good idea mixing a former player with the team he played with.
Lee's interview in the Mayo New's this week suggests all we need to do is bring Cillian back and a few small tweaks!
Neither has any coaching experience or signs of wanting to coach!
I'd give it to Brolly for a year purely to shut him up taking swipes at Mayo football.
He's the Gary Neville of GAA punditry.
I think most Mayo fans would take losing in the first round of Connacht and group stages of AI than have Horan again. Sure he might get you to an AI final, but he'll inexplicably throw it away with tactics a 5 year old would scoff at.
If they could send Horan on sabbatical once Mayo reach the AI final, that would be ideal.
As for the others no-one jumps out, but they might as well give it to someone living in the Mayo region such as Moran.
Possibly a left field option would be Aidan O'Shea or Lee Keegan.
Personally think this Mayo team are in transition and will be for years.
I don't see Shane Curran in the betting. Surely he will have his name in
Boylesports odds:
Horan 2/1: a top manager who did everything except get us those final few inches over the line; been there and done that (twice) though
Andy 2/1: a fan favourite but while he got Leitrim promoted, he also managed them to a defeat v New York; currently a coach with Monaghan
Austy 2/1: an AI club with Cuala, they have a huge pick but that was also their first county & provincial title so maybe not the open goal it might seem. No intercounty experience and based in Dublin I think?
Dempsey 6/1: 2 county titles with Knockmore, put himself forward the last time but beaten to it by McStay and went to Limerick instead where it didn't work out too well
Oisin McConville 12/1: was part of Dempseys ticket the last time out and ended up in Wicklow; promoted from D4 to D3 in his first year and maintained that since then. His two highest profile wins were against Westmeath in 2024 Leinster championship and again in 2025 Tailteann. Not sure where he's based
Davy Buke 12/1: not sure what he's doing on here?
Donaghy 14/1: Talks a good game on the radio and has been part of a very successful Armagh team; could be worth a shot but I'd say he'll have his eye on the upcoming Kerry job
Tony McEntee 14/1: former selector with Horan (or was it Rochford?) and has just finished up managing Sligo - he's done okay with them tbf
Kevin Johnson 14/1: Successful club manager with Tourlestrane, Ballintubber and Corofin.
Nobody standing out there IMO and it probably depends on the backroom teams also. If I had to pick one now, I'd probably go for Kevin Johnson
For anyone who's a current club manager though, they may not want to ditch their current team a few weeks before championship is starting.
I don’t understand the furore over the statement. It seemed fair enough to me ?
In fairness if the county board sat on their hands and let it drag on everyone would be giving out as well!
They have acted decisively and might now have a manager in place before club championship.
That’s a good thing surely ???
😁 Ha, they had Maughan is as a choice for the next manager. Stupid stuff
You said the statement backed up his refusal to leave. It didn't.
I said IF TRUE so I didn't quote it as gospel.
The Bookies odds have obviously nothing to do with the CT so that part is legitimate.
ah now, you hardly expect them to say they asked him to go and he didn’t want to. Every dog in the street knew he was on his last stance this year. The statement said enough if he refused to go..
The 3 bookies front runners doesn't excite me much.
Do yourself a favor.
Stop reading the f**kin Connaught.
