I agree if McStay refused to go then the board had to make the decision. Hard to believe he'd dig the heels in though given his health status and the type of person he appears to be.
McGuinness was a Donegal man but don't forget he had the cache of an all Ireland winner. I'd be all for appointing someone similar internally but I can't see anyone comparable emerging.
In terms of a new manager id be happy with anyone out of McConville, Fitzmaurice, Peter Canavan, Enda McGinley, Eamon McGee.
They'd be as well to beg Jim Gavin to take it at this stage…
I had heard yesterday that a recent ex mayo player successful club manager was putting in a ticket and Paul Kennerick was on it as coach

Statement isn't a fraction as bad as I was expecting based on the comments.
It could have been done better for sure, but it's fairly hard to put a gloss on sacking someone.
They thanked him for the huge effort, time and dedication etc and wished him all the best for the future.
I doubt too many from outside the county will be up in arms about it. Des and Leroy aren't exactly distanced from the situation, with both being on the Montrose payroll.
Passion, experience and an edge - yes all good qualities, but does Austin O'Malley have any of them!?

Any backroom team should be trying to get Caroline Currid as on board now that she has left Limerick hurling.

I don’t know him. He has to have some of these qualities based on winning the all Ireland club. The club is not based in his native county so he got buy in and brought them on that journey. That’s a fair achievement.
The panel o malley had pick from was ridiculous I no he still had to do it but it's a lot easier when you have I three I think dublin players on the starting team

McStay and Rochford have book managed clubs (outside their home countys) to All Irelands…………It's not really the be all and end all - that said he's got pedigree to some level.
You'd hope that they can get someone in relatively fast.

But whereas I think being a Donegal man was a major factor, I don't think being on that 1992 panel was a major one.
If we are going to go down the road of played for Mayo and won a senior All Ireland then Sean Lowery is our only option😀
Fitzmaurice relatively speaking failed as Kerry manager.
But that's because he was too close to the players having only recently retired, and was slow to regenerate the squad.
He's a great reader of the game, he could be a good choice, whether he's interested or not is another thing.
I've always wondered if Austin O'Malley would be an option.
I did not watch much of last year's club All Ireland series so I don't know anything about Culla.
Did they win it because of O'Malley or did O'Malley win it because of Culla ?
Like the good club player that can't make county, is he a good club coach that can't make county.

A pretty classless statement from the County board, its not Mourinho they are sacking. Not even a thanks for all your hard work, its common decency and manners IMO.
Happy they have done it early though, we have eight weeks to get someone in place before the club championship
I wouldn't be in favour of O'Malley, he is meant to be a good talker with little substance but he is probably going to be the man to get it.
My preference in order would be
Jim Gavin
Eamon Fitzmaurice
Oisin McConville
Jury is out on O'Malley imo. He lucked out with the squad he got at Cuala.
Where is all this McConville love coming from? I've heard him speak about the game a lot and he's an idiot. You may as well be suggesting Marc O'Sé for the job!
Most of the best managers are relatively unknown until they take the job. It's up to the county board to to make sure they are getting the right person for the right reasons. No one knew Gavin or McGuinness as top managers, just up and coming u21 managers. And knowing the county and it's underage structure is way more important than some ex player/recent pundit whose main selling point is that they are not from Mayo! For that reason, the likes of Sean Deane are more appropriate than McConville or Fitzmaurice.
Jim Gavin, gimme a break. Why in the name of God would Jim Gavin be interested in managing Mayo?
Mcstay's achievements with St Brigid's was more impressive to be fair, he didn't have Con or Mick Fitz to build a team around.
I think I would rather see Andy get it ahead of O'Malley, but I don't think Andy should be coming in there while his playing buddies are still there!

a whole load of people have missed/decided to entirely ignore those 2 paragraphs in the statement.
And I imagine that they are being led by McStay's media buddies who will be giving him nothing but sympathy while blaming the County Board and the players for everything that went wrong during his shambles of a regime. His term went exactly as everyone knew it would go: a disaster! He was a goner after last year. I'm sure he'll have plenty to say in due course, all looking for sympathy while accepting no blame himself. The statement is fine, don't believe the spin.
As for the next manager, I'd be looking outside the county. No matter where you look with our own candidates, there's too many connections and tangles that it would be better to look for a completely fresh start. I'm glad that nobody is mentioning Horan though, given that he's seemingly red hot favourite given the rumblings going around since last year. For the record, he's had his chances, been a great coach, but he's not the man to take his over the line and should not get another chance.

Really? My recollection is that there was widespread enthusiasm in the county for the management team when they were first appointed
My enthusiasm was largely based around several articles he wrote about a kicking style being more suitable for Mayo than the running game of old - a theory he seemed to abandon almost immediately.
I think it was right to give him his shot, but the writing has been on the wall for a while
Yeah really "lucked out" winning Cuala's 1st ever Dublin title going on to win Leinster and all Ireland club titles.
Sean Deane brought a Mayo minor team to an AI final but gave a lot of newspaper and podcast interviews ahead of the game gushing about the the players. Galway in contrast kept their heads down and put in a big performance while Mayo failed to show up. With Breaffy seniors it looked like the players were not disciplined to follow a game plan (then again that could be said for his predecessors as well).
Sean seems like a nice fella and works very well with younger player but no we need someone who has played or managed at a higher level and who has a stronger edge.
I don't believe Gavin would have any interest either. If Michael Murphy hadn't made a comeback I think he would have been a good candidate with his experience and Mayo connections.
mayo’s biggest failing with the new rules is their inability to kick. Will a new management address this? do they have the players to do it?
Will some players be depensed with?
How much time will be given to management?
Yeah I remember there being alot of excitement with him and the team he brought with him. I personally was delighted for him to be finally getting his shot and for Rochford returning! They got off to a great start to be fair. I don't think anyone had high hopes for this year though.
On the kicking, yes I believe the players can do it and am eagerly waiting to see how many 2 pointers our county squad score during the club championship!
