All of these things can be done by an inside manager. Outside managers will bring biases too, even if they don't come from watching club football in Mayo. O'Hora is definitely direct and I like that he speaks his mind but the attitude shown in the Galway, Tyrone, and Donegal games tell us that there were minimal problems within the camp because the players gave absolutely everything.

I completely disagree! The performance in the Cavan game told us that there is huge issues in the camp, along with the fact that the closing minutes in the Donegal game showed us that the camp had learned and evolved absolutely nothing since the Dublin game in the Hyde last year!

With everything that's happened this year performance wise and how we haven't adopted to the new rules at all tells you everything you need to know about what's going on and the standards in the camp in the moment. The flashes of good performance in the Galway, Tyrone and Donegal games just shows what the team is capable of but cannot consistently maintain at the moment!

There is that angle that outside managers have rarely won an All Ireland.

However, there's also an opposing angle that there's no Mayo man alive who has won an All Ireland so why not look outside to someone who has.

I would certainly be more excited by an McConville type appointment than a Moran type appointment at this stage.

Not saying outside is better than inside per se... But it's time to shake things up a little... a lot.

An outside manager may not make sense in counties that have won all irelands but Mayo is an exception in being to so many finals but failing to finish the job. Some will say that we got to finals so we must have good managers. Well they were good but at this stage I think we need a manager with all Ireland medals to instill the extra bit of belief needed. A little bit of cynicism would do no hard to as the current squad seem to lack a bit of the dog in their play.

You've pretty much summed up my thoughts there. An outside man with AI medals would have more authority to treat every player equally and pick a team and panel from a clean slate. This is a 3-4 year project once again and I'm against the idea of playing players who won't be around after a year or 2.

Totally with you on that. McConville wanted it the last time. I would be very happy if he decided to come in. He is a winner as a player as well.

Maughan is too old now and Moran is definitely not the man

This was floating around on the betting

I'm fairly sure those aren't odds from an actual bookie

Unless this is a hack the management are gone. No review? Pretty clinical

But why review….. It was over and the review would only delay the inevitable. It’s the right thing to do and now they have time to find the best guy and a man who wants it.

Thanks for the league title Kevin, always a nice day winning a national title in Croker. Unfortunately that was the peak and while there were some bright spots, it just sort of petered out after that.

It's on Twitter too. They have hardly hacked the two accounts.

"relieved of their roles" would imply they didnt go willingly into the night

Always thought it was a 3 year term until read reports now that was appointed for 4 years ! Fresh blood no harm at all . No harm for his health either .

I figured they would go but I thought a review was required after year 3. Maybe they had a brief one but thought they would all go away and discuss and then reach a decision

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,402 ✭✭✭HBC08

Well the CB can't be accused of not acting quickly anyway.

I think it's a good decision for all concerned.

Edited to say thanks to Kevin and backroom team.It didn't really work out but they gave it everything.

Also, the wording of the statement is needlessly blunt. They should be looking a bit harder at themselves in all this aswell.

Co board have ended the Mayo team managers tenure. Blunt statement.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,595 ✭✭✭Audioslaven

A review means they had a chance of staying on. The last review gave them a life line. The CB didn’t want to give them an option. I would agree they should have given McStay the lead to call it quits and then they thank him. That would have been nice but it would appear they just want out. Who knows maybe McStay wanted another year and they had no choice but to pull the rug.
Anyway it’s the correct outcome and that’s all that matters as it’s not a popularity contest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,472 ✭✭✭Westernview

It's the correct outcome but does not come across as having been conducted properly. McStay isn't stupid. If the board made it clear it was over I'm sure he would have taken the opportunity to step down.

Just as there is a correct recruitment process it is equally important to let mangers go in a professional, mannerly way. I hope that was the case.

Agreed, it could easily have been done more diplomatically

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,570 ✭✭✭naughto

    Same outcome none the less.

McEntee for me to take over.

Would love Mcentee or Mconville to get it. Think we need an outside voice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,037 ✭✭✭✭irishgeo

    It was a 4yr contract.

I wonder will the players be asked who they want?

Yeah the statement is quite abrupt in tone. Gives the impression of having been pushed? But hard to know if that was the case. Usually, as you say, if a manager is being pushed, it's still phrased in a softer way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,472 ✭✭✭Westernview

This is how the statement will be viewed outside the county. After all the previous managerial controversies not to mention the recent revenue issues you'd think we'd handle this better.

Damages the image of the board and potentially damages the interest from outside managers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,595 ✭✭✭Audioslaven

I agree but you would have to think they gave him the chance and he didn’t jump at it. The statement reads to me anyway that he didn’t want to go or some other move was put forward…and they called quits on him. It may have ended badly during the “talk” and they couldn’t say he resigned when he didn’t. McStay should have led on this once he lost the CB confidence and he was gone in their eyes. Rockford also could have some play in this as he appeared to me like a guy who was going nowhere after the Donegal game

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,595 ✭✭✭Audioslaven

Would prefer someone totally new against mcEntee who was there before. McConville would be ideal.

Seems like lots of people within in the county want McConville. Not sure it'll happen.

County board can't do right for doing wrong.

If they had a review and it dragged out a few months people would be on their back for that too.

I give McStay so much credit for giving up the easy talking head job and trying to actually do something with Mayo.

Hopefully he can recover fully and get back to the talking head job, because he was good at that too.

As for a successor, i don't know where to look.

We need a Jimmy McGuinness type figure, simple as that, and I think by their very nature that type of figure can only come from your own county.

The person who has to get the players to buy into what they are selling can't afford to be an outsider, because that gives the players an excuse not to buy into it.

Who that is, I've no idea.

it’s a guy with passion, experience, having an edge to them and has the ability to bring people on the journey. Look at Brennan in Louth, mcguinness, mcgeeney althou I am not a fan, even Joyce for Galway. They all have it. If we are to go with anyone from mayo, then why not Austin O’Malley after what he achieved.

Anyway Will be interesting to see who gets it.
