In County clare I estimate about 5% of the cars have non compliant number plates, and the vast majority of them are on BMWs and Audis.
Do the police ever take action on this issue?
Well I just worked back to 10% of the current fine 🙂
But you're an accomplished dealer so I'll move back a bit more and we'll shake in the middle.
If the aim is to wipe out the dodgy plates we won't fall out over money 🙂
See post above.
Yes add in publicity and a sort of amnesty.
After that just go for it.
€500 is a bit ridiculous don’t you think. A standard €60 fixed penalty notice with 1 or 2 penalty points would be more appropriate.
What they could do?
How about they pick a date in the future which gives people time to get the plates sorted back to the standard ones? Say the 1st July or rhe 1st August. Have an advertising campaign, and tell folk that they will get an automatic fine if stopped with a non standard plate after that. Or a point on their licence.
Then set a date for illegally blacked out windows, and do the same with those.
It would be achievable if the will was there.
As was discussed earlier in the thread the legislation is a mess.
They need to leave Revenue out of it.
Then have a hefty but not stupid fine like the current 5k.
Say something like €500 and leave enforcement to AGS and traffic wardens.
Simple pic and FCPN.
That's if they are serious...
Maybe start issuing fines, or making reports to Revenue so they start issuing fines?
Unless they are going to increase the number of multi agency checkpoints it's hard to see what they can do.
It's all beautifully vague about what they're actually going to do.
It's common enough...I saw an old guy driving a new BMW X5... With the gel plates, black background.
I'm not sure if this is just in Cork or if there is any national clamp down planned.
Coincidentally yesterday I saw a car with a yellow plate on the front which was a first for me. It was a Galway reg.

Guys, there’s practically ZERO chance of any enforcement when the very people tasked with said enforcement are breaking the aforementioned rules.
Just the other day I observed a car with “4-D” text, a dark background and a missing front plate, and where does it turn? Into Swords Garda station. 🙄
Yes but those plates were and still would be in compliance with the statute as the letters and numbers form part of the plate and are inseparable therefrom.
We had '4d'plates in the 1960s!

Nha, its worse over there. They also tend to use illegal spacing a lot too, to make words on private plates. But DVLA can confiscate your plate if your caught 3 times

I would think that the number of dodgy plates on the road in the UK is miniscule compared to here.
We really should though.
They know they have a problem with "ghost" plates now and are trying to deal with it.
The ANPR technology is good but it only works if it can actually read the plate.
Considering the UK don’t do this, we definitely won’t either
It would be logical in order to make the most of the investment in technology.
Doesn't bother me. But it might bother you when you go for your NCT.
With the elimination of the tax disc and enforcement through traffic cameras and NPR technology, I wonder If they will enforce the correct application of number plates?
My latest car came with non standard plates but they’re legible just don’t strictly conform to the prescribed template. I’ve no issue with them but it seems some perfectionists get awfully worked up over this for some unknown reason. Could it be a modern take on the curtain twitchers?
The point, and which is lost on you, is that legislation prescribes a certain format for the reason of legibility. If legibility did not matter, they would not be so descriptive, and there would probably be no need for a visible display of a registration plate.
That you don't care, does not change the requirement.
It's a joke, but no laughing matter, that the only sanction owners of vehicles with non-confirming plates face is an NCT fail. And if this is the only advisory from the test, a re-test is a visual inspection at no cost.
I do however agree with you that all road traffic offences should be rigoursly enforced by AGS to make our roads safer for all users, including those that believe the road traffic act/rules of the road do not apply to them.
Right mate go on so and be obsessed over things that don’t matter, don’t care and not engaging any further on the subject.
My first post on the subject was less than 25 minutes ago, you're the one that has been going on about it for ages 😂😂
Petty theft is grand cause sure there is murderers to be caught isn't there? We'll put assault as okay as sure if the fella isn't dead he will recover and no harm no foul right? This here is your arguement.
You don't get to decide which laws are followed based on how they affect you unfortunatly.
Swear to god it’s like speaking to my 6 year old.
look mate, if you want to just follow every law without question that’s put to you then god bless.
Is it such a big deal I don’t agree with you? Can that not just be the way? I think it’s not an issue. You think it is. Fantastic.
Can we move on now yeah? Or do you want to spend another while circling around to arrive at the same conclusion— you give a damn and I don’t.
Your argument is non-standard plates are okay because you can read them and if others can they should get glasses or some nonsense like that. It's as much of a BS argument as mine was, you can't choose which laws to obey just because they don't effect you. The book isn't called 'The rules of the road that you feel like following'.
Seeing as our Gardai have limited resources in both time, staff numbers and etc I would like them to use that to focus on seriously troubling behaviour as opposed to poxy things like a bloody reg plate or the tint of someone’s window.
There’s people killed left and right by dangerous and careless driving but it’s the reg plates we need to focus on big time.
I heard one of them 4D plates broke into a pensioners house the other day. They’d want locking up so they would!
So tell me how many car accidents leading to injury or death have been caused by non standard plates as opposed to say; mobile phone use or drink driving?
And these ran over mammys by cars with 4D plates- are they in the room with us now?
