Temporary car insurance

I've got a spare car in the driveway, my daughters boyfriend is coming to stay for a month. Can I 'sell' him this car so he can get insured on it for the month? I've named him on my car policy before but that doesn't work great coz we sometimes both want the car. It'd be best for him and my daughter to have their own while he's here. He's over 25.

Can he not drive it under a driving other cars extension, or temporarily transfer his own insurance to the car

I could be wrong but afaik there is no such thing as a month long/temporary insurance in Ireland.

Where is he from? There may be an option in his country for that.

We need a lot more information before anyone can answer your question….

Can you elaborate on what you mean by a 'spare' car - is it uninsured or have you insured it as a second car?

Does your daughter's boyfriend have an Irish driving licence? Does he have a policy in his own name for a car owned by him? If he has his own policy, he may or may not be able to drive that car, even if there is no policy in place for that car, it depends on who he is insured with.

If he has no policy of his own and the car has no policy, I'd forget about it. It's unlikely any insurer will offer him a short (one month) policy.

If he hasn't his own policy, "sell" him the car and get him to take out a policy and cancel it within 14 days, then repeat.

Hi. The spare is one my husband bought secondhand as a weekend car that isn't his work one full of tools etc, but soon realised that he can't easily insure a second car,so he's putting it through an nct and then flogging it. However, if we could 'sell' it for €1 or whatever to daughters bf that'd be good. He has a full UK driving licence, is insured on his own car in the UK.

If the boyfriend is a UK resident then he won't be able to buy an insurance policy here in Ireland afaik. You need to be resident/living in Ireland to hold a policy here.

Why not drive his own car over from the UK? Depending on his insurance company he should be covered for up to 90 days at a time to drive it abroad.

Yeah, he doesn't want to drive over it seems. Insurance companies are so annoying here. I went to visit my brother in tenerife recently, he's got 2 bangers insured, I took my pick of one and was automatically insured, no forms, no extra fee, no hassle, if the car is insured then that's all they want. I can't figure out why it's so awkward in ireland.
