This is a thread for Irish Unsolved Mysteries specifically - I think it's worth splitting them out, because a surprising amount of the facts and mythologies about Irish unsolved mysteries aren't recorded online or might be recalled in more pertinent detail by users here from contemporary reporting.

I reckon the Sophie Toscain du Plantier cases is pretty well covered by other threads here as well, so let's try and gather up others.

Yeah apparently there are huge numbers of tips sent to police for high profile missing person cases - of course nearly all of no consequence, so it takes a lot for them to follow up on one, even moreso to make it public. There were complaints about waste of Garda time and resources, but the person who told them about that area of Chapelizod just said it might be where that poor young man's remains are (not that they were definitely buried there) and no doubt corroborated that claim with good reasoning.

It has been said before, by me and others, that that area (Leeson St and Baggot St environs) s although posh, could also be quite seedy late at night back then. Now that I think of it. I remember learning that a property on Lower Leeson Street was been used as a knocking shop in the early 2000s. If I recall correctly it was in the row of shops and houses where the two pubs O'Briens and the Leeson Lounge were located. Guards already know about this btw. In fact, it was them that told me, in relation to another case. He was travelling of course AWAY from Leeson St in the last photo. But something could have happened afterwards. So was he enticed somewhere he wouldn't have ordinarily gone if he was sober and something bad happened? It's possible.

The unidentified guy arriving at the bank gate and just standing there in memorably bad weather for a little shy of half an hour - then walking out onto the footpath and on his phone just moments before Trevor arrived - is the very strange aspect.

It is just my opinion - but I think that this episode - the murder of Sinéad Kelly and possibly of Rosie Lakes - may well be connected to the mystery of Trevor Deely.

That "Crumlin crime family" were ruthless - and the area where Sinéad worked is just downstream of Baggot St Bridge - the exact place where Trevor was heading for when last seen.

Rosie wasn't murdered, she was one of a number of addicts who died of a dodgy batch of heroin. Unless they were evil and organised enough to import dodgy batch intentionally and make sure she got some of it but seems unlikely.

It's called a 'hot shot' in the US, and can be supplied intentionally. The heroin content would be much higher than what the addict is accustomed to, hence leading to respiratory failure.

He was born to an epic family legacy of crime and is described as ruthless. Does he have two sisters still living in Ireland? They could be hoping he'll panic and ring one of them and say something incriminating. Wouldn't be admissible in court but helps in building case.

It was Gerry all along, in all these missing cases, he used to crush them under his enormous fat belly. Joe Duffy and Marian Finucane were involved as well, they did the kidnappings. Those that survived the crushing ended up being bored to death by Miriam O'Callaghan.

That's what I was thinking too , or hoping for anyway. You'd love to see justice done for Fiona and her unborn baby .

It must be so hard on her remaining brother, wondering if this time will bring something viable for to charge someone in relation to her murder . The same with JoJo Dollards family last year , it must be heartbreaking for them all .

The purposes of the searches may be threefold or even fourfold:

(1) finding remains

(2) rattling someone into saying something to someone during a phone call or sms message

(3) Jogging someone's memory, e.g. an innocent party/witness from the area, along the lines of "Oh they're searching that field? now that I think of it I do remember something odd that happened around that time near that place, struck me at the time was a bit unusual but didn't occur to me it could be linked…."

(4) triggering the conscience of someone who has given partial info in the past but then thought better of it and gave no further info thus far. this could be someone who facilitated the aftermath of the murder or had knowledge of it.

The father said he had requested the army be called in to search but was told the Gardai had it in hand . He denied there was any friction due to Fiona being RC and they COI. He said she was well able to work on the farm saying she cut grass with a tractor and help her BF deliver a lamb
