How many times you have failed then passed your test in Ireland ?
passed on the 4th try, after doing a coupe of refresher driving lessons and a pre test that morning and hired the instructors car. Failed first time round, for driving in a bus lane, in my defence (not that there is one) the turn for the test centre was at the end of the bus lane, I just pulled in to soon.

A first test costs €60, but a retest only costs €40, and there's a backlog of people waiting for their first test.
If the object was to make money, why would you waste your limited capacity serving the people who pay less?
Not that it matters, because the reality is that the testing service doesn't break even: the fee is a contribution to the cost testing, it doesn't cover the whole cost.
A driving test is €85 and it has been for a while now. There is no reduction for repeat tests.
I think you're getting mixed up with the NCT test fees.
It does not. It's €85 each pop. Lessons €50, pretest €150 and then another €40 or so for the licence once you pass your test. Scam.

Passed on my 3rd attempt back in 1990. First time I knew I wasn't ready, but was under pressure in work to get a full licence. I remember the name of the tester, a grumpy and surly individual. Second time, I was better prepared, and lo and behold, I had the same tester again! He was still a grumpy and surly man.
Third time, the tester was sound, about 10 minutes in he says, unless I crash I've passed. Totally put me at ease.
How are any of those a scam?
You're getting a service, that costs money. The government has nothing to do with what private businesses charge for lessons
€40 for a licence that lasts ten years is better value than a passport
Props to all the people correcting me on the cost of a driving test, as if the amount of money actually mattered to the point.
The testing service would still cost the government money even if a test cost you €200.
The idea that it is being run as a profit centre is stupid, and even a couple of minutes of thought about the costs involved should make that obvious.
If people thing the driving test is a money making scheme, wait till they hear about cars and their associated costs....
It took me four attempts. It really depends on the examiner. A couple of examiners were faulting me on ridiculous things like taking too long to enter a roundabout - the traffic was mental, nothing I could do about that.
Another guy asked me to reverse around a corner and had me keep reversing until I got to the end of the estate where I eventually clipped the kerb. Third time I was "borderline" passing.
I did my test about 25 years ago…. I can count on my fingers the number of times I've had to reverse around a corner since then!
Do you never reverse park? Coz that's essentially the same skill set.
Yeah I back into my driveway, but I line the car up and can see clearly what is behind me when I do that.
Reversing around a corner is dodgier, when you may not have as clear a field of vision.
Don't get me wrong, I could do it if I wanted to, I just avoid it.
