Why is my wired Ethernet connection slower than my WiFi?

As title suggests. With VM 500mb, have the white router that they send out.

Testing using my PS5 (right beside the router) I'm getting 90.3mbps using wired connection but over 300mbps when using WiFi.

I got new Ethernet cables (Cat 6a) but the speeds don't change.

My router has 4 LAN ports at the back. One goes to a TP Powerlink. One goes to a BT Whole Home mesh disc. The other 2 go to PS5 and the TV. Are the devices causing some issues here? Or is it a slow router?

I should probably add that the 300mb WiFi speed I'm getting is via the mesh network, not the routers own network. The routers own network only gives me ~80mb.

In Windows, it's under network and internet settings, Ethernet, and check the aggregate link speed value for the adapter.

Assume I would need to plug Ethernet cable straight into a laptop for that? Because of course, 4 laptops in the house and 3 of them don't have an Ethernet port. The only one that does is a work laptop that is heavily locked down by IT and no way of accessing Network & Internet Settings.

Its hardly visible by logging into the router settings?

On the PS5 it should be under settings > network > view connection status.

Go to http://192.168.0.1/ and click "Connected Devices". What does it say in the "Speed (Mbps)" column beside each Ethernet device?

I wonder if that is just soaking up all your available bandwidth from the Virgin hub and that’s why there’s a low WiFi/lan speed from the hub?

That only seems to show the current speed I'm getting, not necessarily what it may or may not be capped at.

However in my router settings when I look at connected devices, I see everything that has connected recently and it looks like Ethernet 1 has a max of 1000, whereas Ethernet 2 and 4 (3 not currently plugged in) have 100. Can I change this?

PS5 is the only Ethernet 4 connection below.

If you have the el cheapo VM white box router, then most of the ports are 100Mb only.

They literally can't do 1Gb speed

Would help if you actually told us the exact model and save everyone an awful lot of time

That confirms you're only getting a 100mbps link speed, as purifol0 says the ports may be only capable of that. Changing cables will have no impact.

Sorry I didn't realize there was different models. Here is what I see on the bottom.

So it seems like Port 1 - which my mesh network is powered from - has a speed of 1000 and everything that connects to that network shows up in connected devices as Port 1 /1000.

Everything else (Port 2, 3, 4) seems to be capped at 100, which probably explains it.

if this is the one you have I am not surprised you’re only seeing 300mb max. You’re on coax so you’ll unlikely ever get 500mb and that modem is not capable of multiple devices using gigabit lan at once- it will only allow one device to use gigabit lan and the rest will go to 100mb max.

Thanks all for the help. Sorry, it's difficult to give all the info needed for someone to diagnose an issue when it's not my area of expertise. I guess the solution is a new router where all ports can support higher speeds.

but you’ve got a max of 500mb coaxial. You are actually wasting your money if you buy a better network setup with that speed on that network

Unfortunately that can be a bit messy to achieve. You're stuck with the VM supplied modem either way, there's no skipping that. If you connect a more capable router to the 1g port, it can cause other issues such as double NAT, and possible weirdness with other functions.

The best answer is to put the VM hub into modem mode, (may need IPv4 enabled by VM) you can then connect a proper router to the 1g port, and the hub is transparent, making your router the sole router in effect. It can then distribute the full bandwidth to the other devices.

Or you could chance a call to VM and see if they'll upgrade it to a newer one.

Well my problem is moreso not that I want to achieve 500mb or more (would be nice but I realize I can't with a coax as you've pointed out) but I'd ateast like to be able to achieve more than 100mb from Ports 2, 3 and 4. Even if I got 300-400mb from the other ports, that would be a big help.

Or maybe I just bite the bullet and go SIRO, is that my best option?

Ok. So do not listen to Raichu, they have no idea about anything.

You can buy a 5 port gigabit switch (costs 10 to 20 euro) and plug that into port 1.

Or you can ask VM for a router that has gigabit ports and make sure they give it to you for free because it's 2025, and the one they sent everyone way back in 2009 was gigabit on every single port like it should be.

All 4 ports on the Hub are capable of 1000Mbps. The connected devices page shows what mode it's operating at, not what the port is capable of.

I would disconnect all other ethernet devices and only connect the PS5, see if that resolves it. If it doesn't, it's a cable or PS5 issue. If it does, start connecting the other devices, checking the speed after each one

The coax network is not that bad. Obviously FTTP is better but I had a 1Gb service on it with the Hub 4 before with no issues. All ports were 1Gb and were able to achieve it. I had the Hub 3 before that and the ports are definitely all 1Gb, if you can achieve it with all 4 connected I cannot remember but the Hub 4 should solve that.

As @Spear said above the best thing to do would be place it in “Modem Mode” and get your own router or mesh system and even better again switch to a provider who is using SIRO as you said it’s available to you.

Okay so some more diagnostics. I plugged everything out of my router.

I plugged mesh back into Port 1. It shows as a speed of 1000 on connected devices.

I plugged mesh out, and plugged other devices into Port 1 (using the same cable as I used with the Mesh) and they show a speed of 100 on connected devices. Devices tested were PS5, Smart TV and Firestick (Ethernet adapter).

Why is the mesh able to get 1000 but all other devices only get 100 even with the same 6a cable and the same Port?

yes but it is contingent on other users in the area and at peak times you’ll potentially slow to a crawl.

You would definitely be better off with SIRO if that’s available.

Further to this, my laptop also achieves 1000 when it is the only thing connected to Port 1.

So it seems to be a problem with those 3 devices that only receive 100 - PS5, Smart TV and Firestick, right?

Jeez, I should research before I ask stupid questions.

LG OLED lans are capped at 100mb anyway.
Amazon Firestick Adapter is the same, capped at 100mb.
PS5 there is a known issue where some users can get more than 100mb and no known solution.

So that explains it... Thanks all for the help, I'm definitely a bit smarter than I was 30 minutes ago!

This was because areas with Virgin coax had no other option a few years ago so everyone was using the same network in the area. FTTP is shared also. Coax does have issues but it’s not as bad as some people make out.

Maybe go to a browser on the PS5 and look up a speedtest website and see what that says, I think I saw someone mention it was reporting incorrectly before for them in the settings.

No I’m not, I said it has its issues but it’s not as bad as some people make out. Reliability is obviously higher with FTTP.
