Buttons on cars need reinstatements instead of those distracting touchscreens
Wired printers too. How many peoples eyeballs have i wanted to gouge out with these wifi/bluetooth ones. Just let me plug it in, hit send and print!
Inspirons of that era were the cheaper consumer option but lacked things like TPMs alright. Latitudes, Optiplexes, or XPSs SHOULD be OK though if the rest of the spec is good.
Unfortunately a lot of buyers/decision makers in these places (especially smaller companies) just look at the price at the time - which is why lots of them only come with Collect and Return warranties for a year, leading to screaming at IT folks when they're told it'll take 2 weeks to replace the screen that "just broke", or that it isn't worth fixing that 18 month old laptop at all.
Or you could do what Pink does… make them an accessory!
I'm getting Something About Mary vibes off them...
They're also known as Earpons/Earpax in our house 😆
I’m surprised that there’s otherwise compatible devices out there with no TPMs. TPM 2.0 was part of Microsoft’s OEM requirements since at least July 2016. Intel Coffee Lake CPUs (the minimum supported) didn’t appear until the next year.
I heard she does that so if she’s about to run into someone she doesn’t like she can just slip in her headphones and pretend not to hear them.
Or I just made that up- it’s one or the other!
And people who lack self control and known for being aware of it? Nope.
I really believe that isn't anyone else's problem to solve.
I don't think phones should be limited or restricted in what apps they have or what they can do, because some people have no self-control.
It will be society's problem, dealing with the consequences as it is when it has to deal with some people having no self control in other areas too. It is a wrong turn, which is what this thread is about.
And it was the same with television. Same with video games. Same with music.
When it became easier to access it people spent their time doing that. People used to spend their evening in front of a television watching the same programs as the night before. Now they scroll through Facebook reading the same **** as the night before.
Nothings changed. The screens just got smaller. Also it would be fantastic if you’d stop trying to assert that grown ups can’t make their own decisions just because you disagree with it doesn’t mean it should be banned.
society will function despite screen addiction. Just like it manages to cope with every other human flaw.
I didn't actually say it should be banned though did I
Some grown ups make decisions that are bad for them - that cannot be seriously denied and that you phrase it as 'despite' implicitly accepts this. And this is adds another one into the mix.
What I said was this was a wrong direction, we'd be better off if the tech had stayed more limited. I stand over that.
Sorry, no, not buying into that.
If there was such limited access to apps and internet on phones, how would you propose people keep up with work commitments when out and about? I certainly prefer to have a small slim device in my pocket during the evening or weekends when out and about or when travelling for holidays etc rather than using space in my luggage for a laptop!
Is it a good thing you can \ must keep up with work commitments when out and about \ on holidays? Beyond say a simple response to an email to point someone in the right direction?
I think most people would prefer to be off work when off work, someone running their own business might have different idea. But it can be used by companies towards employees in a negative manner.
There's a multitude of mobile apps that are useful for work and not just Outlook. Adobe PDF, Word, Authenticator to log into other systems etc. Many modern jobs aren't simply 8am to 5.30pm these days especially as you move into more senior or specialised positions where someone can't simply cover your work because you want to be unavailable. Not saying most days on holidays that people do more than simply scan emails a few times per day and send a few instructions but even to do that effectively or review a few documents you need a few apps.
you are wrong. That’s the end of it.
Like that ended anything ever.
So nope, this is just the start of it for society.
Are the jobs no longer 8-530 because of the tech? Is that good for the long term work life balance and health of the people in those positions that they are expected to be available like that? Doubtful.
There is evidence that forms of social media and other forms of internet usage in general is bad for us, but the question is what we can do about it.
One analogy I heard which I liked was social media now is like cities were before sewers were invented.
This thread has taken an unexpected path.
Who in the world thinks keeping up with work when out and about in the evening or weekend is a good thing? And travelling for holidays?? Is this serious
There's some truth in what you say, but I think it is different with SM apps in particular. The effectiveness with which those apps can be targeted to achieve political goals is different to anything we've ever seen before. This happened with Trump 2016 and with Brexit, with Cambridge Analytical. It is continuing today with YouTube, TikTok and X providing the most divisive content to a very wide audience. We can see the impacts of this division every day.
We really HAVE to do something about it. All the talk about limiting SM access for under-16s totally misses the point. It's not just or mainly under-16s who are being damaged by social media.
i work in a large multinational whose main product is 'a technology'. in part of the organisation which provides email and collaboration tools (albeit i work in a different, parallel team). i've never had mail on my phone thankfully and never needed it.
though to be fair, i'd say i'm very much an outlier.
we talk about damage the internet/social media has done my nieces' and nephews' generation, and not enugh about the damage it has done my parent's generation.
This. I see a lot of older people (particularly on Facebook) who have gone down far-right and conspiracy rabbit holes over the last decade or so.
oh believe you me I do not for one moment think SM is a bastion- it’s a damn cesspit and I’m only delighted under 16’s will soon be banned from it. How effective that will be remains to be seen, though!!
If by utilising technology to allow you work smarter across more hours but, equally, more flexible hours to be more productive so that instead of earning €100k, stuck in a 8-5.30 job and retiring at 65 you could instead earn €150k+ and then retire 10 years earlier at say 55, then I think that's much better work/life balance as you get your entire life back a reasonable age.
There's also the fact the benefits of being able to be flexible work in both directions. For example in many professions years ago you'd be stuck in the office waiting to close a deal, complete a project etc that ultimately might not happen until the next day but you needed to be available. Now you can head home, put the kids to bed and keep track of the email to see do you need to log back in.
Its a big if. The flipside is people now having what should be their family / downtime at risk of and being interrupted. Regardless of where they are or what they are doing. You cant switch off unless you leave the phone at home.
And how much of that 'work smarter' other than checking emails needs to be or should be done on phones, and on phones above type of interruptions more likely.
As opposed to on a computer or laptop - and any kind of real work is going to be a PITA done on a phone versus a proper device.
Its the mobile element that has bigger risks.
Personally I tend to just disable my work profile outside of work hours. But yep I do know people who never disconnect from work and having at the top of your fingers all the time isn't necessarily great.
How do I get rid of the weather app on Android? It's superfluous to my needs as I use a different weather app, yet I am forced to observe the Google weather app as it is not possible to uninstall and is unhideable.
Perhaps you're over exerting the limits of your expertise with this particular opinion you're posting as fact.
You can cancel Google updates. Not sure how though.
Maybe Google it.
