Yes, I'd say the price rise is baked in now, no matter what happens to the scheme.
If there is one positive to the scheme it is that it can help keep the streets a little cleaner.
Though it can also make them worse. People emptying bins into the street looking for cans and leaving an absolute mess behind them.
If we could make most litter "returnable" for money in some form or other, that would be a good thing.
The litter problem would become self policing.
For a scheme that's supposed to help 'clean' up the litter problem I see very little improvement around my local rural roads. There are still plenty of plastic bottles and cans littering the verges around here. I noticed a car going slowly past my house one day, do a u-turn and drive, again slowly, past before pulling into the verge further up. Out jumped the driver with a bag, they picked something up and into the bag. I thought that they were litter lifting and though 'fair play', less for me to pick up. The next thing they picked something up, looked at it and threw it back. This went on for a couple minutes. They were searching for returns and throwing back the others.
You do realise there are other options on what to do with that cash?????
Mmmm, I think there's two hopes for that.
Bob Hope and no hope.
Seen this today in Tesco rathfarnham. Two people with a shopping trolley each of clear commercial bags of plastic bottles. Got in just in front of them. Still have to print off a receipt and walk around with cash that I’ll have to drive to the bank to deposit which is crazy.
Am looking forward to the full release of figures from the scheme in six weeks or so. The fact the the UK are calling our scheme a success would suggest that the figures are at least known to a few people and have been shared privatly. Unfortunate.
As with a number of posters here I have engaged with the scheme but its farcical how often you go to a machine and its broken, full or a small queue at it. The machines are obviously all different which is a PITA as well.
By far the "Best" machines I have seen are in ALDI and the staff are very responsive when there is an issue but then you have people coming in with multiple black sacks of cans obviously collected from a workplace or school which holds up the entire queue.
Never mind the time and significant extra emmissions cost that this scheme has brought relative to old ways.
Unfortunately very few of the promises made before the scheme started to "enhance" the scheme have been delivered on - just more PR spin and guff.
So yeah, looking forward to the numbers.
The shop would need to ensure the discount doesnt drop the price below MUP.
I assume MUP does not include the deposit value.
How can you get around MUP using loyalty cards? Are there any examples I could “investigate” 🤣
If it does get scrapped, lets hope the product price reduces accordingly.
Are there any plans to allow the deposit refund to be paid directly back into your bank account via a tap your card/phone method? As opposed to printing you a receipt, going to the till in the shop and getting a cash only refund?
Just spent 25 minutes walking from one shop to the next looking for a machine that was working.
Came home with all the bottles and cans.
This is an absolute waste of people's fu*king time.
I've genuinely reached the point that I would vote for anyone who promised to scrap this nonsense.
It is one of the declared sources of funding of Return.
This has probably been asked and answered.
The Return scheme is funded by all the unclaimed deposits. Something like 54million euro since it was introduced.
But where does the money go from the tonnes of sorted aluminium and plastic? That stuff is worth lots of money.
This government are an absolute bunch of joyless wankers.
They're really going to "crack down" on shops knocking a euro or two off of some booze?
There's nearly always a queue at the bulk return machine in Newcastle so, they are making a return on it, especially if people spend the return voucher on fuel rather than taking cash.
They are quite an innovative service station so maybe believe they can make it work as opposed to an expensive publicity stunt.
Bulk machines have not penetrated the market in Europe to any degree. 500 Tomra installed after 5 years. Shops will only install them if it is worth their while. Possibly the one in Newcastle Co Dublin was done for a bit of publicity.

The point is that someone has your money and you're entitled to get it back.
The container I had that was logoed but not registered was very rapidly registered and working after reporting to re-turn.
UK scheme is going to be operationally identical to here; but I suspect there'll be far more bulk return setups due to the way their waste collection works there - no private firms for domestic waste in general; load more, larger, better council bring sites. All funded by council tax that makes LPT look like a pittance.
Our system after the bedding in period works like basically everywhere else too.
Yes it can.
The report form link shows when you click on "click here" in the second illustration provided by @zell12 above.
A photo of the rejected container can be uploaded.
I can't vouch for the response because I've never used the facility.
Yes, but what is the point, the scheme is 15 months going now
Can this not be reported on the return website… ?
Another one with a logo but not in scheme - Funkin Nitro Cocktail 200ml. Go figure
You having a laugh. Copied exactly, ha
Here we go again.
I never realised there was a difference but I use my cards automatically anyway so probably didn't notice.

Surely they will copy our system exactly, just like how we copied our system exactly from other countries??
I'm anti gombeen.
I live on the border with NI so will see pretty quickly how both schemes compare.
Don't be so anti Irish. The UK people like what we are doing.
https://defraenvironment.blog.gov.uk/2025/01/31/introducing-the-deposit-return-scheme-for-drinks-containers/
So what is a deposit return scheme?
With successful examples in countries like Germany, Sweden and the Republic of Ireland, deposit return schemes are a common-sense way to encourage us all to recycle our drinks containers.
I'll bet you 54,000,000 euro it wont operate the same as ours. It will be fairer to the customer which shouldn't be difficult.
The scheme for England and Northern Ireland is starting on 01 October 2027. They have the Regulations written up already. The Republic of Ireland is mentioned in Clauses 6 and 8. At a glance it will operate the same as our scheme.
