First I tried a very broken Pixel 3XL that the rep tried with but system said no… She had no problem with the screen being totally broken but said if the till says no she can't do anything about it…
I then used my backup plan, a pixel 4a 5G that has a damaged screen (it has a vertical line running down it that renders that part of the screen unresponsive). Accepted that no problem, gave me 203 euro off the phone so net cost to change was 197 euro. I didn't even have to buy a SIM, rep said there was no need if I didn't want one.
what did they give you off with the 6a? have one of those spare but it has on overseas eSIM that i am not keen to lose!

Had the same experience shop refused phones that the site accepted.
I used a spare Pixel 6a and that worked.
I tried in Vodafone shop on Henry Street, Dublin earlier
Phone was in stock, but the sales rep looked down their nose at my Moto G8 Plus and refused to take it. Phone is in mint condition, but she said they don't accept Motorola's as they don't stock them
Interestingly the mail in site accepts them, but not in shop, but only way to get the 200 discount is in store

Anyone in Dublin, don't waste your time. None of the Dublin stores seem to have stock of the 9A. I checked a few in person then asked on support chat and they said the 9A isn't in any Dublin stores.

Yeah this is pretty much the point. So long as your phone is eligible, it's €200 minimum value off the retail of a pixel9a anything you get on top, even if it's €6 for an old Xiaomi with a broken screen, is a bonus.
Good luck trying to get €206 for that on adverts etc.
The trade in value is largely negligible - the point is, they're giving a €200 discount ON TOP of whatever trade-in value your phone is valued at.
