You couldn't make this stuff up. 5 years ago the government were forcing masks down our throat, now they are climbing over themselves to stop people wearing them.
Clearly, this would tie in nicely with any facial recognition software they incorporate into the bodycams down the line...

If by "spammer" you mean anyone who disagrees with you then yes.
If you're going down that road, then we understand masked protest to be a euphemism for mob and gangs and criminality . So yes no one wants masked gangs and this law is very much needed.
Are they also going to demand that people de-pixilate their faces when speaking to journalists?
No bitmasks…
And there's always 8chan or whatever for you in that case. Anyways, Gardai can ask protesters who cover their faces to remove masks. They're probably only likely to do that if they're causing problems.
Hmmmm- I’m just having a second think about this legislation and just what problem exactly that it’s trying to solve?
When I first heard of it, and read that the circumstances whereby you could be asked to remove the item covering your face, only where a Garda believed you were committing a crime or about to commit a crime or similar, I thought “fair enough”.
But now I’m not so sure- Shirley the whole suspected of committing a crime or suspected of about to engage in unlawful behaviour etc comes with the right of a Garda to identify you, which in turn may involve their right to ask you to remove any face covering?
So the question now is - why da fck is this legislation required?
If laws are weak on apprehending suspected criminals or those about to engage in unlawful behaviour, then fine strengthen those - but this legislation doesn’t feel at all good. I reckon this legislation will be ultimately used when facial recognition in public goes mainstream - a camera mis-identifies you as a suspected wanted criminal - you’re wearing a mask or a scarf or other covering on your face - Gardai now have the right to ask you to remove it - that’s where this legislation is really heading
Why is it required? Where it is intimidatory or intended to make it easier to commit a crime and avoid detection. Protesters, road traffic offences on scooters and motorbikes, as well as assaults and thefts – are perpetrated by offenders wearing face coverings.
But if you’re suspected of committing or about to commit a crime, legislation already exists to deal with you - you could be dressed up as Mr. Blobby and you could still be asked to identify yourself - Gardai dont need this legislation right now in terms of how the justification for introducing it has been explained
when it’s properly cold in winter as in low single digit temps…I’ll go about with a Russian type trapper hat and a big warm snood. No other reason than I’m prone to feeling the cold. with the snood and hat combo my eyes and top of my nose are the only parts of my face still visible…im not out to conceal my identity but that will happen as a byproduct of the way I’m dressed and wanting to remain warm..
What next, no gloves, the government warns…want everything we contact to have finger prints / DNA ? After all, we’ve nothing to hide!?
There’s nothing in the proposed legislation stopping you from dressing like that.
It’s happening in China right now- certain ethnic minorities are prohibited from leaving their homes without their mobile phones so the government can track them - there are cameras everywhere- there are also 80 million members of the communist party ratting on their neighbours for things like littering or bad parking.
We’re not that bad in Ireland- today. But the technology is here now in Ireland and it will be used - we have a chance to control that use right now- but with laws such as this, a small piece of our rights have been eroded - and many don’t know it yet.
The whole “if you’ve got nothing to hide then nothing to fear” line is the greatest naive piece of b0ll0x ever written on this forum, and I’ve seen it written way too many times. With technology where it’s at now and its capabilities, anyone writing that is just demonstrating complete and utter stupidity.
Nothing to stop you continuing to wear your trapper hat and snood. If you're just going about your business you've nothing to worry about from this legislation. It's only if you do something to draw Gardaí attention to yourself, you could be asked to remove them. If they want your fingerprints, they'll take you to the station.
I apologise in advance but…. the word is "surely". Shirley is a name.
it was deliberate - I often do that just coz I still have a “right” to do it 😀- most people just reply with “don’t call me Shirley” and we have a small chuckle
what happens currently if a mask wearing thug caught throwing stones at windows is arrested?
Do the Gardai bring him down to the station to question him whilst he is still wearing the mask?
Of course they should have the power to remove masks from people who have been involved in crimes.
Not unless you're dressed as Mr Blobby AND using it to be intimidatory or intended to make it easier to commit a crime.
If you’re suspected of committing a crime or intimidatory behaviour legislation exists currently to deal with you regardless of whether your knickers or any other item of clothing are draped on your face or not - we don’t need this new legislation
Theres always a trade off with any law. That some people will get done for speeding in error it's not a good reason not to have speed limits.
Just because China has locks down mobile phones does not mean we can't have driving licenses. It's a false equivalence.
Nope- it’s a gradual erosion of rights over time - there is no justification currently for this legislation - none whatsoever
Let us know where you've seen mobs of snood wearers in the middle of the night intimidating people or robbing people.
Theres been a litany of masked crime and intimidation.
Yes, of course that crime would never have happened if this new law was in place 🙄
There are existing laws that counter “masked crime” and “intimidation”- tell me exactly how this legislation will improve things.
No one can say exactly is not been tried before. Should cut down on Chinese Mr Blobby mobs, that's the main thing.
People complaint constantly and at length that the Gardaí don't do enough to combat crime.
So, new measures are introduced to help them combat crime - and people complain about them (probably the same ones complaining they don't do enough).
Only on bloody Boards.
So you’ve proved my point - right now this legislation does nothing to prevent crime - it serves no purpose other than for Gardai to have more powers - and especially with face recognition in place, that’s worrying considering face recognition statistics aren’t known for their accuracy
That’s just another way of saying “if you’ve nothing to hide you’ve nothing to worry about”- a pathetic misinformed comment - are you happy for Gardai to have whatever powers they ask for?
That would depend on what powers they're asking for.
I'm happy for them to have this one.
Without any clear reason why they need these powers? I call that slowly walking into a society with greatly reduced rights over time - not something I’m interested in doing - I’ve highlighted just one future issue with this legislation - there are likely more. And yet no-one on this thread can tell me why this legislation is required - but yet you’re “happy”- that’s all I need to know.
You can't say it doesn't work. Then say your worried because it will work.
You've made no point. You asked me to predict the future exactly. Which is nonsense.
Likewise claiming it will have no effect but also claiming it will be so effective as to identity too many people. Can't have it both ways.
Has to easier to identify people faces then people in masks. You seem to be inferring it isn't.
