Reported today that DCC will be closing the only public toilets in the city. Too costly seemingly.
Yet at the same time we can afford to have security minding a statue. Strange priorities imo
So what are they supposed to use? Those things are fcuking gross anyway. It's about half a step up from just having a slash straight onto the street.
Lack of public toilets in Dublin is ridiculous, should be a standard feature of any city that hopes to attract tourists as it from my experience on the continent.
Wouldn't be that difficult to have those pay for use toilets that only open if you pay €1 like I've seen in other places, no attendant would be needed during the whole day just to be cleaned by a council worker once or twice per day.
I never said this was a magic solution. I was mooting it as a partial solution for some of the population, not as some kind of panacea.
I didn't think this needed to be explained.
The one in Tallaght, or the Liberties?
How much does it cost to use this toilet?
I wonder if they factored in the Stephens Green shopping centre toilet. A lot of people use this toilet, so when the shopping centre gets closed and redeveloped, the demand for the DCC toilet outside the centre is going to increase significantly.
By then, the outside toilet will also be gone.
It's free, iirc.
Yeah but in Spain you don't get anything like the welfare payments you get here, therefore people have to take up those sort of jobs to get a reasonable wage. In Ireland the welfare system acts as a disincentive to take any of these relatively undesirable jobs
there are quite a few public toilets in the city centre. DCC has been criticised recently for not making this fact more wide spread.
Quite a few cafes and restaurants have public toilets. They allow their bathrooms to be used by the public in exchange for more favourable leases
however, there is no official list of the establishments available as far as I’m aware.
DCC 2025 Budget
Division C - Water
Code C 0401 Operation & maintenance of publin conveniences = 486,709
Given the issues in Dublin City Center I can't see how providing public toilets is viable. They'd have to be constantly looked after and repaired.
I don't think we are in a position to provide facilities like that at the moment anyway.
I really don't want to see lads taking a p*ss in the street.
The smell of them even.
It says a lot that a first-world capital city in 2025 can't even maintain a toilet.
It's just an idea. Can't say I find the sight too appealing myself. However, if there's issues with paying for the cleaning and maintenance of toilets, this might be of some use as a stop gap solution. There are other ones in London behind a barrier so nobody sees anything but they're just urinals.
You know those "bar bikes" they have in London, you could retrofit them to have urinals and thrones, do your business while taking in the sights.
Any Belgian city I've been too has permanent urinals around the city centre. Even dumps(!) like Brugge https://maps.app.goo.gl/EFCSDTGkJtRhcDWZA
Can you imagine doing that job in Dublin city centre?
Ah now….that's taking the piss!
They use to be brought out in Temple Bar at the weekends in the late 90's early 2000's especially at closing time.
So is there anywhere on the South side of Dublin now where you can use a toilet for free? I ask as a man of a certain age who has to pee a bit more often than I would like . . . generally use the ILAC or Jervis Street shopping centre on the North side, can't think of an equivalent south of the Liffey
I was wondering how long before this would turn into a list of loos :)
South of the Liffey you can use Marks & Spencer Grafton St, Brown Thomas Grafton St for free. There's always McDonalds and Burger King also on Grafton St. I think there are toilets upstairs in Powerscourt House as well, any of the free museums/galleries - National Art Gallery, Natural History Museum, National Library. I'm sure there are others, that's just off the top of my head.
When you gotta go … you gotta go.
The Green will be used.
Use the Bike shed.
Urination once again.
Can't you go into a pub toilet and pee ? I guess that only works when they are open.
Damn, I hadn't thought about that. Yeah that is one of the few toilets in the city centre available to the public. All the pubs say toilets are for patrons only, but I don't know if that's technically legal as it used to be a stipulation of their licence that toilets had to be open to the public.
mcdonalds…ever hear of the "mcshit"
But they say we are a rich country...🙄Most people know that statement is a falsehood
If a member of staff challenges you and you promise to buy something on the way out, it’s a McSh!t with Lies.
Stephens Green centre top floor.
We are a rich country, with a very wealthy capital city.
The problem is that DCC do not receive the funding to match the taxes raised in Dublin.
And don't they do the populist thing of lowering the local property tax then as well?
