after 37 years! I can’t believe it to be honest I expected him to be carried out of the place.

I wonder if it’s got anything to do with the turbidy carry on or he’s just decided to move on- 37 years is a long time to be working for someone!

His final broadcast is Friday June 27th. I don’t think liveline will last long after he’s gone- they’ll appoint a new presenter but I just can’t imagine anyone replacing him!

I know he's not bright but it's not true to say he has no pension. I'd have assumed he's been maintaining a PRSA or something similar for many years now.

350k for at least the last 10 years is 3.5 million. He spends most of his time going to funerals and visiting graveyards. Hardly a lavish lifestyle.

I’d be curious to see, I wonder if he’s just going to take it handy and enjoy whatever time he’s got left.

Not expecting his imminent passing or anything but he’s going for 70- 37 years working for RTE, will 7 years in Aras interest him that much? He must have some whopper of a pension coming from RTE?

It wasn't all that sudden really. He's 69 and a lot of them retire from RTE at 65.

I think salaries are now capped, I believe, at 250K - Joe was on a lot more.

He'd allude to ongoing contracts and negotiations with the RTE top brass fairly regularly, particularly since Bakhurst came on board.

I'd be a semi regular listener to the show and I always got the sense that, over the last 18 months anyway, that he wasn't getting what he wanted/wasn't as interested anymore. He was taking the absolute piss lately with days off and his appetite for getting into on air rows etc seemed diminished.

was in the dentist a while back,recptionist had him on,was just short of asking her for a pair of plyers so i could pull the tooth myself and get out of there with out suffering anymore listening to him as well!!
