You couldn't make this stuff up. 5 years ago the government were forcing masks down our throat, now they are climbing over themselves to stop people wearing them.
Clearly, this would tie in nicely with any facial recognition software they incorporate into the bodycams down the line...

Why not use a fake name and wear a mask at work. That solves that problem. That's what I do, I have full face balaclava for working at the bank…seems to work get a lot of cash tips from everyone.
I think you've made you're own bed there. But what idiot would take that job that they are so against. It like a vegan animal rights protester getting a job as a steak taster..
Thats easy for you to say. Say you work for a pro Israeli tech company but want to attend a pro Palestinian march. Should the protester just suck up the risk of getting blackballed if they are unlucky enough to be snapped by the press?
I've been on many protests and never felt the need to wear a mask. If your cause is just and you feel that it is then man-up and stop trying to hide who you are. Only people intent on trouble and scumbaggery hider their faces.
Good. I started a thread on this subject last year. Glad to see this change being followed through.
OP seems to be of the cohort that think (or perhaps wish) they're living in a draconian police state, rather than one of the most stable and prosperous democracies in the world. The oblate spheroid world.
I think not
Only those out for confrontation will refuse . For whatever reason
Protests can turn nasty but the organisers have to follow AGS instructions when they are given permission and make efforts to ensure rules are followed for everyone's safety not just those on the protest
Those that don't follow whatever the instructions are , well that's looking for trouble I guess , for the sake of it or for publicity.
Either way its unacceptable protest by law and if people get in trouble then they knew what they were doing
Peaceful protest is acceptable In a democracy
.
When you start to become violent the argument is lost as most moderate people will turn away .
How is anyone to know what way a protest will go before it goes?
In fact you could foresee a situation where peaceful protest turns violent on the back of a demand to remove face coverings.
Is it an erosion of civil liberty to assume that those whose faces are covered have riotous intent before even a word is said in anger? There are legitimate reasons to not to want to be identifiable at a protest that do not involve criminality
Outside your house, with burning torches !
But , let's respect their civil liberty garda
Nothing says peace like a masked group in the middle of the night.
If it is towards peace and no trouble most people would have no problem though.
I don't consider it an erosion of civil liberty to expose those who engage in riotous or criminal behavior . And most reasonable people would think that imo
Why don't you use a fake name on your passport, or a fake name and address when getting a tax rebate. Or use a fake name when the doctors lookup your medical history. Fake name and address for deliveries.
Are you the Gardai?
The proposed law is unenforceable without targeting everyone at a protest.
For example if it kicks off at a protest, faces will be covered and there's sfa the guards can do about it. The only way this is useful is if face coverings are removed before trouble starts.
The meaning might be well, but it is an erosion of civil liberty
This iis not what is intended though.
Peaceful.protest will not trigger Garda intervention .
This is purely to deter thugs who attack people or property
Anyone got a link to the draft legislation?
The reporting of it seems to suggest a very water downed version of what other countries have.
I live in an area full of these but I'm supposed to be afraid of BLM protesters and Keffiyahs lol. We've all had run ins with them in Dublin of course!
The Gardaí aren’t even allowed to approach them little scrotes on scramblers in case something was to happen and one of them fell off, the Garda would be the one in trouble. The little scumbags know this too and think they are untouchable…
Great little country we live in.
Imagine starting a thread like this because the braindead scumbags who cause trouble in masks are people you identify with. If we stopped all immigration do you think they'd be nice people? They'd hate gays, educated people, people who dress different, people who talk different to them etc.
Immigration is something we need to address far better but these are the same scumbags we had before the current immigration situation.
Pathetic post.
Indeed.
Right now there are body cams and the technology to do facial look ups. Most people also have passports or other government ID cards - all of this in databases. Guards won't need to ask for ID anymore. They'll instantly know who you are and all about you.
This tech is here already. Some youtuber was experimenting with this, and freaking strangers out by knowing who they were by looking up social media profiles with their photo on it. This was just someone experimenting. Consider the data the government holds about you.
I guess many people just don't 'get it'. (Why we have FFG etc. I suppose)
If you've done nothing wrong then you've got nothing to fear….
You're not going to understand. I can see that.
A public space is pretty different to a forum. Imagine the Gardai could serve a warrant if they wanted to know more about a poster though.
Ya, you have nothing to fear if you have nothing to hide...
So why don't both of you use your full names in your profiles? Or how about you share your names with us?
People at protests hiding g their identity are nothing but gougers, who are simply out to cause trouble, and with no other reason for being there!!
I agree with you 100%. If you're attending a protest with the sole intention of engaging peacefully, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. I'm always suspicious of people—on both sides of the political spectrum—who feel the need to cover their faces at these events.
The converse of that of course is the Gardai would like to identify those engaged in either illegal assembly or illegal activities such as rioting, looting, violence, arson, etc. The hilarious thing in all of this is actually expecting the Gardai to challenge someone and make them take their mask off, because they seem to be ordered not to engage with any protestors for fear of being labelled partisan.
It's somewhat telling when you see which posters are annoyed by it.
'Fascists and thugs' was what he said, and there is a large amount of the latter at both those protests. Along with the local rent-a-mobs.
Because someone wight not want to be identifiable.
For example, someone suffering domestic violence may not want to be photographed at a women's rights march. A person at an anti migration protest may not want their employer who relies on migrants to know their political views.
There are plenty of legitimate reasons for face concealment at protests and many of those reasons are not to do with evading police.
Why is this issue angering people??
The only people who have to fear this new law are lawbreakers and people out to make trouble.
