New Thread to continue discussion for General Premier League. Old thread closed.
Reminds me of the time that the balaclava wearing "fans" turned up outside Wayne Rooney's house and threatened to kill him if he signed for Man City. Same "fans" who would want to the club to dump a player when they start to under-perform.
I'm 100% behind TAA making a choice - although he only had 4 non-English clubs, who could apparently afford his wages, to pick from!
The dream
Why would you take a couple of reasonable posts… and engage in some bizarre baiting whataboutery?
Obviously he can do what he likes, no objection there, but, there's a way to do it, and leave with a bit of class. I don't begrudge him moving to Madrid at all, and I wish him well, and wouldn't boo him either, he was a good player for us, a bit overoverrated by some, but, not as bad as some made him out to be either, although he's defending was shocking at times! Will be interesting to see how he gets on at Madrid.
The game has changed. And as a right back, he offered more on total than anyone else.
And that’s why they, England, win nothing, too cautious.
People have been posting on social media burning his jersey, and there's lots of photos of the messages put up in people's windows, very close to Anfield, which are not of the friendly kind. To me, its symptomatic of the types of people, from all clubs, who call themselves fans. No baiting from me, bizarre or otherwise.
What would you have preferred he do? liverpool could have looked to sell him last summer if they wanted money for him.
IMO he did what more players shoud do - sign a contract and let it run down, keep leverage over their own life.
I can't understand the players at chelsea signing 9 year contracts and giving chelsea such control over, basically, their entire professional life.
If they blow out their ACL/break a leg/decide "fùck it I'm getting paid bìtches time to put the feet up and coast for 9 years".
He could have came out earlier in the season, said he wasn't signing a new contract, simple as that!
So so simple....
He then gets booed every week, online abuse, dressing room issues etc.
So simple.
totally understand Trent wanting to move but I think hes going to a real that are going to be in Barca’s shadow for the time he is there
I agree.
Florentino Perez is basically making the same mistake he made with the Galacticos. Overloading with talented/egotistical attackers at the expense of the overall team balance.
I'm not sure it's the best move Alonso could make either. Good luck coaching Bellingham/Mbappe/Vini Jr!
Great to see the spurs game getting moved so that if spurs get to the final vs potentially united, both teams would have the same amount of prep time.
Well done premier league and completely makes sense. Spurs just have to get to the final now- easier said than done!
Incorrect. Regardless of changes in the game defenders are still expected to defend consistently. His frailties on that front were masked significantly by having a world class player at the height of his powers in Salah ahead of him to attack what he was supplying. Before you get your knickers in a knot, I'm not saying he's a bad player, far from it, but for any player to be considered as one of the best to ever do it in their respective positions then their substantial shortcomings in what should be their bread and butter cannot and should not be ignored.
If it was united instead of Spurs getting the game switched you lot would be up in arms 😂
Not at all. It makes sense for both teams to be coming into the game with the same amount of rest- I mean it’s a major European final so of course the PL were correct in their decision, just in case either or both United and spurs make it all the way.
It would be like Spurs to lose the semi final now.
We are playing on a plastic pitch, in the arctic circle, missing our best midfielders in the midst of an injury crisis, against a team with a highly impressive home record. It’s not unreasonable to suggest that could happen alright.
Ah in fairness, 3-1 up already against a European minnow… regardless of the weather etc, not making the final would be a disaster.
Whatever about the debate about the RBs, I think this season has just further proven that VVD is up there with the very best CBs the Premier League has ever seen. I'm sure some will claim he is the best and I won't disagree with that but naturally I will always side with John Terry.
One thing I will say though is that there has never been a more aerially dominant CB than VVD has been, and there is no real debating that. In an era where RBs are being judged on how they play the attacking side of the game, the defensive work of the striker and the passing ability of a CB, he excels at the bread and butter stuff of defending.
In fairness I would agree if we weren’t in the middle of an injury crisis.
Even with a bunch of injuries, the players that will take the field for Spurs are of a calibre Bodø/Glimt could only dream of having. And only needing to just not get battered… the odds are very rightly very heavily in Spurs favour (Opta stats give them a 91% likelihood of making the final).
Yeah if you don’t factor in the plastic pitch and the 18hr journey to actually get there plus playing in the arctic circle. Boda have a fantastic record at home and will have important players returning from injury- whereas spurs will be missing Maddison, Son and Bergval and potentially Solanke as well. Kulu is only coming back from injury and not up to speed. To be fair I think if you put those circumstances on most clubs they’d struggle tbh.
Also not sure what you mean by “And only needing to just not get battered… “ it’s 3-1, if they score 2 that’s 3-3 and it could go to penos which is a 50/50.
That’s not getting battered?
I agree with what you say Rebel. But if Bodo scores a quick goal first, nerves will kick in the Spurs team and it would be game on.
A goal from Spurs first and it's game over, I'd think.
Your outlook is limited to right back being primarily a defender. And 10 years ago you’d have been right. But you’re not right now. Defending isn't what he’s best at, but he has completely changed the idea of the position. 90 goal involvements in 8 PL seasons? Some wingers wouldn’t have it. He won everything. You can have your super defenders like Neville all you want, but too class managers want more. And Trent gives them that.
Depends on what you want from your RB, there is room for both types, playing Trent means you need someone (like Henderson did) to sacrifice their game or very mobile good defenders (Konate) to fill the holes he inevitably leaves, so it depends very much on how you want to set up your team and the players available to you. If you have a lot of creativity in your midfield players/ attackers, then a RB like Neville who was a solid defender is probably a better option to balance the team.
And your outlook is limited to his attacking prowess, coupled with the fact he played for the club you support. A defender who is not particularly good at defending should not be in the conversation for the best ever in that position.
You'd swear Trent was the first RB to ever cross the halfway line. Cafu 20 years ago was an attacking force of nature WHILE being rock solid at the back. The basic requirements for a defender is to be able to defend. Obviously if you have a good defender that CAN attack then you get into best/greatest level.
I think what made Trent unique was his passing ability. 20 years ago he'd be playing right side midfield.
