You couldn't make this stuff up. 5 years ago the government were forcing masks down our throat, now they are climbing over themselves to stop people wearing them.
Clearly, this would tie in nicely with any facial recognition software they incorporate into the bodycams down the line...

…or it illustrates how some people are determined to find a conspiracy in absolutely everything.
It is not outlandish to think that a government would want people to wear masks during a panedmic and not wear masks to hide their face during protests. No conspiracy needed.
Usually the simplest answer is the correct one. Occam's Razor and all that.
ah piss off with your bullshit would ya! oh my days the scourge of society won’t be able to hide their faces anymore and will be made identify themselves as is the case in every civilised country!!
No. They will not be exempt because a burqa is a face covering and just like a surgical mask, cloth mask, dust mask, gas mask, respirator, face shield, snorkel mask, paintball mask, balaclava, neck gaiter, buff, shemagh, keffiyeh, ski mask, bandana, scarf, tactical face wrap, hijab, niqab, burqa, chador, yashmak, tichel, mitpachat, khimar, dupatta, chunri, theatrical mask, carnival mask, Venetian mask, totemic mask, tribal mask, Kabuki mask, Noh mask, Commedia dell’arte mask, Halloween mask, clown mask, Guy Fawkes mask, Phantom of the Opera mask, Zorro mask, welding mask, CPAP mask, oxygen mask, fencing mask, HAZMAT hood, beekeeper hood, laser therapy face mask, LED beauty mask, firefighter breathing mask, P100 mask, surgical drape, sleep mask, cold therapy face wrap, mugshot disguise mask and anonymous mask they will be requested to remove the covering in certain circumstances if the legislation goes through.
If the request is met by a refusal, the individual would be committing a criminal offence and could be arrested and prosecuted.
Less concerned about someone in a Burqa than a Keffiyeh…
If you’re going about lawful business while wearing a mask, this doesn’t apply to you.
If you’re in the process of or suspected of committing a crime or about to commit a crime - it does apply to you.
What about someone wearing a burqa at a protest, will they be exempt and if so why?
Pretty cowardly if they can't stand behind the cause and put their face forward. Unless off course they are planning to break the law at these protests, then I can see why they would be upset at being recognised.
This makes complete sense and will hopefully eradicate the targeting of homes/families of politicians by masked thugs. Anyone who attends a protest in a mask is not there for a peaceful protest.
I mean it makes sense. The most rabid anti-maskers now have masks fastened to their face as they wave their Ivory Coast flags.
Preventing crime is just as important as the Police standing around waiting for someone to commit crimes such as to steal a motorbike, assault/rob someone, deal drugs etc.
Because let's face it, if you're walking around wearing a balaclava or ski mask you're not doing it to hide your acne!
An extraordinary global event versus people wearing masks to obscure their identity to engage in criminality. Think you're just looking for something to complain about.
This must be very confusing for some people.
Let me break it down for you.
A few years ago, people wore masks because of a pandemic that spread through breathing on each other. This is a different issue. Now they want to remove masks from individuals to identify them during protests that turn violent. If your business, car or house was damaged in the Dublin riots would you like the vandal to be identified an arrested? Of course you would.
So am I. It's the brief he wanted and he's all over it. I'm surprised, but its feels like he's the only minister getting anything done. The rest are still on holidays since the election. We should have put him in housing.
More draconian over reach by the gardai and government. I can understand why someone might want to wear a mask so they don't get doxed for attending an anti government march. But as always, the left will cheer this one. Thinking the rules are brought in to quell the far right but equally, the Paddistinian crowd aren't afraid to protest behind masks so they need to be careful what they cheer for.
Mod Edit: Warned for trolling
Using current law. Gardai have the right to demand your name and address if you have or are suspected of breaking the law. If you refuse, they have the right to arrest you.
It's not just the scrambler driving, stone thrower of Dublin they are after with this law, it's moreso for the anti-migrant settlement camp protestor in one of the many proposed sites around the country.
How do you arrest them if you can’t identify them? As someone living in inner city Dublin I’m all for this.
And this is a great point. The Gardai want more power to do nothing when a crime is happening, and more when it's already too late...
The person should be arrested for throwing stones not for wearing a mask. And this idea of someone being arrested and prosecuted for purely refusing to remove a mask is insanity, completely oversteps the line
That's fair enough.
They should have just left masks as mandatory, or is it only changes to the law that you agree with that should be made?
So it's fine for fascists and thugs to wear masks to escape accountability but asking people to wear one during a deadly pandemic is too far? Odd reasoning to say the least.
Why can't I make the comparison? It illustrates the frivolous, adhoc contradictory nature of the law makers. They literally want everyone to jump when they say jump. It's about control, not about safety.
Good.
Carry on.
I'm absolutely loving Jim O'Callaghan as Minister for Justice. Hopefully he'll be Taoiseach in 2030.
We have this lad to thank for it…
Obscuring your face to commit a crime is pretty different to containing a pandemic...
One of the worst cases of an 'apples and oranges' comparison I've seen in a while.
Are you seriously comparing wearing a mask during a global panedmic to wearing a mask to hide your identity?
I wish the little scumbags flying around my area on scramblers with masks on werent allowed do so by law. They critically injured a woman in her 60s nearby a few days ago.
