One simple question tells us all we need to know about where we are 3 years into McStays reign and where we are going .
What is our kickout strategy?
Junior B teams have one
We don’t
if we deserved to win we would have won.
We didn’t as we keep making the same mistakes on and off the pitch . Including putting players on the pitch who have shown they are just not good enough time and time again but hoping this time it will be different . PJ subbed a sub yesterday
We left Towey on to kick a few more wides . that’s the difference
Mentality
On the contrary, we did deserve to win. Referring errors did not favour us yesterday. We were the better team for much of the game, down to fourteen men at a crucial point and only a kick of the ball between us and a highly favoured Galway team.
Didn’t deserve to win. Same failings in terms of poor attacking play and bad wides.
I very much think the back card though was incredibly harsh. It was in no way a deliberate pull down. More like a tangling of legs.
Yes either way is fine. The main thing is to reward long range points from open play. But it's a bit silly giving 2 points for a free just outside the D but only 1 point for a longer distance 45.
Exactly, its a completely differnet situation than if a forward punches it over the bar. Or just get rid of the 2 pointer for frees imo
I agree completely. They were talking nonsense on the Sunday game about getting extra technology or improving umpire training to judge the position where ball is touched but all that needs to be done is give 2 points whether the goalkeeper touches it or not. Problem solved.
It's such a stupid rule that you reward a long distance kick with 2 points, but reduce it if an opposition player gets a fingertip to it (let alone that happening if the ball is already behind the posts). They got a lot right with the rule changes but this one is an example of trying to be too clever in my opinion
Hard to put it on the ref to call the 2 pointers being touched behind the line from where he standing. It's first time it's happened in big championship game so will be something umpires will have to be clued in on going forward. On the free at the arc Aidan o shea was more than happy to take it on from there for the 2 pointers rather than the easy one pointer in front of posts.
Disappointing to lose that, we were in the driving seat with 20 to go and couldn't close it out against a team missing their 2 best forwards. Black card incident was a big momentum killer. Subs added nothing; I presume Paddy wasn't fit enough to come on, not sure why he was on the bench if that was the case
So we now have Cavan (h), Tyrone (a) and Donegal / Armagh at a neutral venue. Hard to be massively optimistic tbh
Joe brolly is right about us, no character as a group to tolerate not losing finals
Proud of the fight shown but frustrated with some poor decision making. Think we need to find a new goalkeeper and it's not just based on today. Fought back to get level with Galway and we were starting to win ball from long kickouts with the wind behind us.
Towey not up to this level. Not athletic or strong enough to win hard ball but finishing was supposed to be trump card. Strong wind behind him and a dry ball but fluffed every chance.
Subs bench is weak but we could have won that with better decisions
Poor refereeing from a neutral perspective. Mayo had a 2 pointer count as one and it clearly was past the cross bar before goal keeper punched it. And the kick out that was taken inside the 21 yard line should have been a free in front of goal which would be a guaranteed point instead of free at the arc. It is only a free at the arc if it is taken inside the arc. Trying to get used of these rules myself playing the game at club level with only one ref, then you see such horrendous decisions being made in a provincial final with any amount of linesmen’s 4 th officials and umpires etc, makes me wonder does anyone know these rules at all. These rules need some serious rethinking - from a players, refs and fans point of view. Rules are black and white, there is way to much grey being introduced, club level so far has been a joke how can one official reffing a league match try and control all this - so frustrating as a player
Nope
Almost same failings everything we lose . Reape always cost us from kickouts , o shea should never be on a free and sick of saying he would be more beneficial as impact sub . Towey always wasteful even though can't discourage him from shooting I suppose . Come summer always resorts to type and positives players in league disappear old stock start again . Diarmuid should never be starting and irwin league form deserved starts. Can't say too disappointing losing by 2 points when was talks we had no chance but sick of same shortcomings and been so close to winning . Managers never learn from defeats down the years .
Spin it whatever way you want, that was the only title they had any realistic chance of winning and they blew it. Very fragile mentally, you'd have to say. Have absolutely no idea what Reape's thought process was with that kickout, and Towey is not the man for this level. No composure when it comes to the crunch ultimately.
Very good team performance , but unfortunately we always seem to to have 1 player who will always press the self-destruction button at key moments in games.
A little bit of calm could also have seen us win that game with a few to spare.
Seasons far from over if we learn from these mistakes.
in fairness they didn’t collapse when they lost a man for the last 10 minutes. Plus runner-up gets a better draw. Amirite lads?😜
Put your bloody boot through it ffs. Wtf was he trying to place that???
is a 45 not 2 points?
point & a man down now 😬
Decent comeback in fairness but we've been woejeous since going level
Towey has been hopeless since coming on.
Well spotted ref, linesman would want to wake up.
Mayo not plating well, getting cleaned at MF but still well in this.
break even at MF and I think we'll do it
Galway better all over the pitch.
20 mins since our last score..…Jesus wept
Big enough crowd here, pretty strong breeze which will suit for 2 pointers
To be fair special trains are normally put on for such championship games.
I'd expect DOC to start in place of Thornton who took a knock at training last week.
I can't really make a constructive case for a Mayo win but I have a gut feeling we'll do it.
Mayo by 2.
