I got a lift in one back in the 90s that had a diesel engine from a hiace stuck in it, good pull in it.
Because, doesn't everyone expect to see a classic Harley (I think) with a sidecar, driven by someone with serious throwback chops, on a hike in the Burren? That's what happened to us yesterday. It was… unexpected and different.

Was driving on the N80 on Saturday morning, 10 minutes the Bunclody side of Carlow and a deep blue Ferrari 330 passed us by, very old Irish plate on it, just can't remember the exact number but seriously rare, especially on these shores

Pre 2009 French plates had the Department number as part of the registration number.
Was there not a pre-pre 2009 plate without the left & right hand sidebars as in the plate you posted above?
It was more the silver on black plate that threw me, 'old' French plates were black on yellow weren't they?
It still had the EU and country sidebar and the last two digits were the Department number. It was on a yellow background though.
