Dining 🤔
How much food is served in the Small Crane, do you think?
Liquid lunch
That’s a bizarre article in the Independent. They’ve taken quotes from a PR person who does work for a lot of businesses in the area and put them together as an article. It reads as more of an advertisement than anything. Definitely not journalism
The advertiser article?
Agree its an ideal location for a Cafe/Restaurant with outdoor seating. Take out a small number of surface car parking on this former Potato Market street and it could really happen.
I saw in the papers that one of Joyce's of Joyce's knocknacarra was applying for pp for a coffee shop and two retail units in, I think, the Tesco unit.
Does anyone know anything about it? two coffee shops in the same small space don't make sense.
I hope they don't plan on selling any meat sandwiches

I do wish the papers would do this a bit more often and actually check of the emotional reason for closure actually holds water.
A lot of piss taking when a hospitality venture folds when some rudimentary digging will usually find a lax attitude towards paying the Revenue or suppliers, set against a more proactive approach to paying directors fees, leased cars for family members, generous related party transactions etc.

Baile Chláir new Lidl opening 22/05
Same day as the Claregalway store. 😁
Think this fits here. Road closure in the west end was supposed to be starting this weekend but postponed due to high court injunction. Hopefully only temporary
Pity. Who’s the applicant I wonder?
Wonder is there a Go Fund Me to support whoever is seeking the injunction?
I'm pretty sure it's publicly available but I'm not going to be posting it.
The timing is the worst part. If you've a valid complaint why wait to lodge it? We all knew this was coming. Businesses have invested money in this happening. Lots of staff going to have hours cut or let go because of it too.
It's a favorite for our family because you can actually let the kids run around a bit too. They are more disappointed than the grown ups!
Before I go further all I can say is I'm going by the city council notices in the advertiser the last few years, which, from my cursory read every year, seems exactly the same this year - so I am lost why this is a new objection to it - I remember initial issues with blue light services but these were quickly sorted out.
Ya I don't think there's any change. I guess they had to wait to confirm they were the same but there's still a lag there that wasn't needed.
Anyone know if it's possible to see the complaint? Would be curious
A bit of Carpe Diem going on here? window to make the observation determines everything here I guess

posted on the 23 April - submission no later "than 12 noon on Thursday 1st May 2025."
Otherwise your letter with observations the other 51 weeks of the year is DUMPED in City Council ?
You could be right based on this map

I think the Council be more ambitious here - there are better options than funnelling car traffic via these narrow streets in the Small Crane. Would involve creating Cul De Sac's though - and we CANNOT be having that until the GCRR is built !
Says in the NOTICE:
Period of Closure:
24/7, Friday 16th May 2025 to Sunday 28th September 2025.
was that the case last year? 24/7
No it was not 24x7 last year, it was 6-11pm.
Moving to 24x7 is a major change, for everyone not just cyclists.
I wonder how much additional rates the publicans are paying, in order to have access to the public roads for such an extended time. I wonder how many of them have enough toilets, including disabled ones, for their new "floor" space.
24/7! That’s insane!! Presumably they’ll be giving the like of Collerans a rebate on their rates as well.
Thanks. That's what I thought. Making more sense now to me then objection/objections.
Doubt Council are just stopping it then for CYCLING issues - its always been very low on the priority list. Shure we don't even have CONTRA FLOW cycling on the NEW SCHOOL STREET Raleigh Row.
Local residents and non food and drink business owners objecting as well here?
It's possible that someone from the cycling lobby has raised the objection, because they're more experienced at reading the council announcements, spotting details, and knowing what levers to use to object.
There's plenty to object to.
Pretty sure it's a mistake because nobody I've been talking to mentioned it. And the map you linked to above shows 6-11 (I think. Hard to read).
It's not the Council stopping it. It's a High Court injunction. Haven't heard of a single objection outside of this but there's probably a few
I understand it's a mix. The streets are being closed during the evenings only but the one way system and 'no right turn' signs that facilitate it will be 24/7.
Thanks - then thats a huge change for those local streets.
MOD NOTE: Waaaaaay off topic at this point and of course it's turned into a pro/anti cyclist muck slinging spat - I am not splitting this into a new thread as historically on this forum it's never worked specifically because of the pro/anti spat mentioned
