A girl I work with lives in Blanchardstown, she drives daily to Summerhill in her car. Why t f?
What’s wrong with a modest hatch back?
She’s unmarried and no kids. What the f does she need it for?
No way. It’s fashion and marketing
I wouldn't think so, a lot of "look what I'm driving", keeping up with the Jones, and the trap of being able to get a maximum amount car loan seems to be what I see. Not always, but I of know a few people driving them and they seem to fit into those few descriptions.
It is for some, I would say. Lots of people state they like being higher up and my wife, who has been in her father's X5 quite a few times, says it does seem to give you a better view.
Better view the further you can look but it also creates more blind spots like children who are too small to be seen from the drivers seat window, they might be shorter then your door handle, how can you expect to see them clearly in supermarket parking area?
Its about needlessly using up road space and pedestrian safety.
And a higher centre of gravity that increases the risk of rollover.
Has there been a rise in the case of children being hit by these.?
Definitely seems like an Arms race taking place on the streets, a fight to see who can "stay the safest" while they drive 2km to the local Wine shop…
Saw one of these Mercedes behemoths with one person the driver alone in the car trying to squeeze it down residential city roads, just high enough so the driver can look down on everyone else… when you consider that the Aygo is a more suitable car and won't kill anyone in a collision…
Which of those would protect you more if you were in a crash?
The Aygo would protect me more in a crash..
If you wrre driving them I mean
Oh right, because as I'm sure you know if I was a pedestrian, a cyclist, or another driver then being hit by the Merc would most likely put me into Intensive care or a coffin..
You think you'd survive being hit by the aygo
Yes, speaking from experience… Well It was a Micra.. but similar size vehicles..
Good for you. Now I'll be selective too, and ask if I'm in a single vehicle crash, which will protect me more,?
Your lack of sympathy, noted..
Again, if everyone drove a suitable car for Ireland, the streets and their actual needs and not get involved in an SUV arms race then it would be a better place for all road users.
Would you please stop comparing the biggest and smallest cars on the road. What point are you trying to prove? Why not compare the SUV to an artic? There's an even greater size disparity.
The lengths some posters will go to in order to cast SUVs as the big bad wolf, is mind boggling.
You don't need sympathy from me. So, which car there will protect the occupants more in a single vehicle crash.
It's not that complicated dude, showing what a city car looks like compared to these ridiculously large vehicles is the whole point of this thread right?
If I wanted to cast the SUV sized vehicles as the big bad wolf i'd of posted a pic of one getting a €160 fine for parking in a disabled spot:
oh wait..another one
I've already giving my reasoning in other posts so if that's not clear..well, I'm not going to be corralled into giving the answer you want me to so move on.
I'm fairness, the issue there isn't the car, it's the driver. Fancy answering my question at all?
That's such a childish response, you already know the answer, but won't say because it gives merit to a different side of the argument
Pot/Kettle Pal, my viewpoints here are clear.. So you disagree with them.. get over it, move on.
I see what they are. You've put up a silly picture of someone getting a parking ticket which isn't anything to do with the car. And cant answer a very simple question regarding safety. Hardly worthwhile coming to a forum to debate if you dodge basic questions.
because how many people do you know who bought an artic for doing the school run and the shopping?
how many artics vs SUVs would you see on the road outside your house? i live on a very busy road and there are far more SUVs on it than artics. they're almost nonexistent after early delivery hours.
as has been mentioned repeatedly on the thread, artics are large out of necessity and/or utility; SUVs are large because (for most) it's a lifestyle choice.
i know we are on the same side of the fence usually about SUVs, but way to undermine your credibility…
According to NCAP you would fair better getting hit by a Volvo xc90 than a Toyota Aygo.
Ridiculous trying to make out that vehicle size is an issue when we all know driver error and lack of attention is the main cause of collisions.Inexperienced and anxious drivers get panicked by large vehicles and then decide that people shouldn’t have large vehicles.Good drivers can share the roads with vehicles of all sizes.
So you're stating as fact that Vehicle size has Nothing to do with the survival rate of a pedestrian hit by a large SuV style car, and a smaller car is more dangerous than being hit by a large/high vehicle?

Neither you or I are qualified to state as fact any opinions on vehicle collision statistics or testing. Euroncap are qualified to do so and are backed by a number of European governments and they state as fact that a Volvo xc90 performs better in their testing with pedestrian collisions than a Toyota aygo.
So yes it would seem to be fact that Vehicle size has Nothing to do with the survival rate of a pedestrian hit.
I'm not so sure that's the case. The test is not just based on the effects of a pedestrian impact, it also includes whether there's technology in the car which would reduce the chance of that impact.
From the website:
Cars which perform well can gain additional points if they have an autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system which recognises pedestrians and cyclists.
We all know the xc90s would be the market leader in terms of tech, so in theory it could be worse in an actual impact but score better overall because it has superior avoidance technology. Unless we know the weighting if the scoring, it's just guesswork.
I don't know if they publish the 'raw' data just from the collision tests.
Don’t go to Canada. This outfit was the length of two double decker buses, and it wasn’t the only one I saw. It was ginormous, the photo doesn’t show the scale of it.
