Surprising as a large number of Indian PPS number though explained by the large presence of IT workers, medical professionals and students resident here.

Also statistics, quotes and social media feeds without sources are not to be trusted and usually false.

Further to those figures earlier, they breakdown roughly:

    Ireland

    10650

    EU (excl. Irl.)

    7238

    Non-EU

    16027

So PPS. numbers are being issued to non-EU at twice the rate as EU (excl. Ireland) in the middle of a housing crisis.

And as previously claimed that's a lot of high paid well educated Asians competing for an already crisis supply of housing. Irish people being housed is way down the the priority list.

There will be no shortage of Pakistani immigrants looking to arrive now either after India just ordered every single Pakistani national to leave India this month.

I think there needs to be a reassessment of what immigration is for. It should be for what the country needs, not merely what a corporation needs. It is true that we benefit from the tax paid by the corporation, both directly in the form of corporation tax, and indirectly in the form of income tax by the employees. But this needs to be balanced with the effect on the limited housing supply as well as the downward effect on wages.

There is no need for the vast majority of these IT workers. It's a failing of the government we can't up skill people to fill these jobs. But even without this these should be filled within the EU.

Is your argument that because for example an Indian is working for more money in Ireland than India that therefore there's no downward pressure on wages within Ireland due to the influx?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 18,702 ✭✭✭✭Goldengirl

No downward pressure here in those occupations . Set pay for certain qualifications and experience .

It's not an argument btw. Doctor's and nurses are on a well known pay scale in Ireland .

I don't know what the pay scales or equivalent is in Tech but maybe you do ?

And by coming here they are adding serious competition to the housing market.

If we decide we want these guys we need to reduce the numbers elsewhere. A refugee policy similar to Denmarks would be a great start. Also deporting foreign criminals on mass.

Designating a large proportion of new builds to ethnic Irish would be another good policy.

    https://www.rte.ie/news/crime/2025/0424/1509294-prison-overcrowding/

The prison population across Ireland now exceeds 5,000 in a system with bed capacity for over 4,600, leaving the Prison Service operating at 14% over capacity".

About 17% of our prisoners are foreigners. Could solve the overcrowding by deporting them alone.

I'd still support a new prison being built so judges can hand down proper sentences to pedos and violent criminals.

Is it your belief that these pay scales for doctors and nurses are set according to the living requirements of these workers in Ireland or are they based on negotiations?

What a mad take. Ireland is currently close to full employment. A company has to prove that they can’t hire people here to do these jobs in order to apply for visas.

people claim they have no problem with legal, skilled immigrants. Now it turns out they do, if they are from South Asia.

Can you please explain why there is no need for the vast majority of these IT workers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,306 ✭✭✭RoyalCelt

I'm very close to not even bothering with responses anymore.

You know full well the discussion was on south East Asians because they make up a large portion. Might even you that first mention the term but that doesn't matter.

All issues raised with mass immigration from SEA apply to skilled migrants from ANYWHERE.

The issue is well paid immigrants are coming in their droves from everywhere and they are competing with ethnic Irish for a tiny pool of housing. It's directly making the housing crisis worse for Irish people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,306 ✭✭✭RoyalCelt

Well we don't need them as life will go on without but we definitely want them.

The main issue is the housing crisis and Irish people facing increased competition. The government don't give a **** though and as long as those tax euros keep coming in they'll kick the housing bucket down the road.

There isn't much published evidence but some research indicates that non-Irish workers, including those from India, may earn less than their Irish counterparts. The Economic and Social Research Institute found that non-Irish men earn 18% less than Irish nationals, and non-Irish women earn 30% less.

Also Indian IT outsourcing companies have a significant presence in Ireland. The likes of Infosys, TCS, Wipro and HCL Technologies have been based here for years and their outsourced workers tend to have lower wages compared to their counterparts within the company. This can sometimes have a ripple effect and put downward pressure on local employees wages and affect bonuses payments etc.

The Multinationals hired 1000 extra people in 2024 between them. We issued 150k new pps numbers to immigrants last year. God knows what percentage will be able to Pay their rent without government assistance.

but, but , but we need these people for highly skilled jobs paddy hasn't the skills for!

In reality the homeless n refugee industry needs these numbers arriving, they are their lifeblood.

You can see also in that article the complete disconnect of IBEC with what is going on in the country. Adding 15,000 jobs is fantastic if you have high unemployment like we did in the 80s. But in a time of full employment and a housing crisis, adding 15,000 jobs involves bringing in 15,000 people, making the housing situation worse for those already here.

    @Phat Cat

( Having difficulty with posting this or quoting so I will try again )

The research you have referenced is correct but it doesn't apply specifically to Indian nationals which is what was being discussed by me .

Generally in highly qualified high paying jobs ..

    https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://www.lawsociety.ie/gazette/top-stories/2024/september/indian-nationals-have-highest-earnings-here/&ved=2ahUKEwiaoKuezPGMAxVsVEEAHRBhET0QFnoECDQQAQ&usg=AOvVaw17QqRzxYAK0Hcq-UWOCARw

    As regards outsourcing ..

different pay scales may apply depending whether they are living and working in Ireland or elsewhere

But we are talking about those who migrate and live and work here in Ireland .

Here's a bit of immigration trivia.

There are more Indian's living in Ireland then in China and there are more Chinese living in Ireland then India.

I am talking about those who migrate and live and work in Ireland also.

Almost 2,000 Indians have been arriving in Ireland a month since January 2023. In October 2023 over 1,000 a week arrived. Source: PPSN registrations by year, month and country. https://assets.gov.ie/270081/13290610-9fc8-440b-892c-87ae866da8a5.csv

Ask anyone that works in IT and they will tell you the number of Indian workers joining their ranks over the last few years has surged massively. Also historically Irish companies like Bank of Ireland, AIB & Eircom have outsourced their entire IT departments to Indian companies based in Ireland at the cost of local workers jobs. It usually for short term gains and never works out, but I won't go into anecdotes as they aren't allowed here.

You claim that it is self explanatory that there is no need for the vast majority of these IT workers but you are unable to offer any explanation.

When it comes to the health care, I fully support skilled workers coming but it's taking the piss when it comes to the I.T sector.

The I.T sector are just abusing the system at this point for cheaper workers.

Our little country has such lack of resources from healthcare to housing but the influx of people is just not stopping. It's so unfair on the Irish public that cannot get a GP appointments to housing.

And it's just a tip of the iceberg when family unification comes in too.

You just have to look at the UK as a prime example how all of this is blowing up in their faces, far far far to many "Skilled" workers came

We are in the midst of a housing crisis, accepted by the Fine Gael government years ago. Michael Martin hiding at the trump meeting said it himself, yet we are handing out 30,000 plus visas a year? Our government are letting down the Irish people. We are being priced out of housing and they don't care. Visas last 2 years plus a possible extension of 3 years. The housing and infrastructure isn't there yet the government are happy for house prices and rent to hit record levels. Handing over tax payer money for grant after grant when the working person gets nothing and can barely survive.

They are not looking out for the people. Only themselves.
