"Unsuitable, oversized, and unsafe" is an opinion. People are entitled to opinions, but that's all they are.
These vehicles pass the prevailing safety tests and legislation and EU type approvals etc, ergo they are deemed suitable for use by the public.
More than that, I'm quite happy to live in a society that allows people choices about how they spend their money and what cars they drive. Personally I can't stand small hatchbacks but I appreciate that a lot of people like them so work away!

a 5 star rating means 'as safe as we can currently make that scenario' but that does not mean 'safe'.
Just cos large vehicles are legal doesn't force you to purchase one? And like you have just confirmed, others have to live with the consequences of people choosing vehicles more for status than actual suitability on the roads.

I have no problem with any pick up truck when it's got the same footprint as an average car.
There's no excuse for a Ford Ranger with crew cab being a school run machine.
You can drive it if you want, like you said it's legal.. Probably costs a lot to tax, insure, maintain/fuel, doesn't fit reasonably into parking spaces, takes up a lot of room on the city streets and also pumps out Diesel fumes for everyone else to enjoy.. but sure you're alright Jack.

Literally lives in peoples heads rent free. Reality is green partys impact has been minimal. For gods sake they were a party of 12 TDs in the last government, if they had half the impact claimed by posters here they will have been the most impactful party in the history of the dail.

maybe you misunderstood me? you suggested these cars have 'excellent safety' for pedestrians. my point was that what makes them excellent is usually a marginal gain. or in short - 'more safe' does not equal 'safe' (which is what 'excellent safety' would usually imply)
Saw one yesterday, looked like a Ford Ranger pickup truck in bright blue, dark alloys with a very glamorous young woman driving it, and a custom licence plate too: "J0a55n3" or something…. Total ego trip vanity vehicle!

don’t believe I did. EuroNcap determined that a vehicle with 5 stars is excellent within their checking criteria for this one part of their testing we are talking about - pedestrian safety, It was not my opinion it is a statement of fact, think you should take up your gripes with them.
Pedestrians can only be kept 100% safe if all vehicles of every shape, size and battery or ice are consigned to history but wait they could be hit by a bicycle, ban them too.
It was a two year old truck and not a dint on it, I reckon the most action it's seen is driving through a few rain filled potholes in an unpaved carpark.

Everything in life involves some level of risk, and while yes you should always try to reduce or minimise that risk, there is a point where those attempts become counterproductive to the needs that still need to be met.
There's also a level of personal responsibility and accountability that's missing here. While it's easy to blame and demonise motorists, pedestrians walking out in front of traffic, cyclists (and motorbikes) weaving in between traffic, and all presuming that the motorist can and will "take care of them" is a mistake as well.
Fundamentally though the real issue here seems to be that some don't like what others choose to drive more than anything.
How many Ford Ranger's are doing school runs? They're typically driven by contractors, farmers and business owners.

One wonders why a Govt hell bent on flailing the private ICE car buyer (while incongruously incentivising the purchase of ever increasing in size and power EVs) in order to save society and the world allows the self employed and businesses to so flagrantly desecrate it with such impunity.
You should compare Ireland's footprint to a city in China of 5M people. And I don't care about the global warming thing. Sea levels are rising at a rate it'll take a thousand years to go up 1M which is part of a natural cycle anyway.
What I care about is my children breathing in diesel fumes. And an unnecessary amount when you factor in the complete overkill when some people buy cars.

Snorkels on Off Road cars that never leave the road (bar a a driveway) are the stupidest dumbest thing out there. They usually seen on cars that are imaculately clean that wouldn't be anywhere near water.
You drive a car through river that's burst its banks and the paintwork is effectively destroyed by the sediment carried in the water.
the 'but china' argument handily ignores the fact that it has become the world's factory. of course they have a large carbon footprint, we get them to make our stuff for us and then complain they produce a lot of CO2.
