So the balls-up has started since last night which makes Fairview from clontarf to Edges corner a single lane with bollards down the centre.
This will be a permanent feature and works will take 21 months.
Yeah, probably should have just added some extra lanes for motor traffic elsewhere in the city instead. Maybe a few roundybouts too.
That poster comes along into threads like these throws in a deeply unpopular take then runs off sniggering like a teenage troll not to be seen again for ages.
stick them on your ignore list, you'll be missing nothing of value.
it's not like they ever dig up roads either, only cycle lanes
Yes, to stop people parking there. The barriers are lower then a parked car, in particular a parked SUV and thus easier to see over them and thus the cyclists on the cycle path.
There aren't a perfect solution, but okay temporary one. Permanently removing the parking space and replacing them with greenery would be better as it would be lower and improve visibility even more then barriers.
All I can say is thankfully the Greens are gone and we can get our priorities straight instead of pandering to a tiny minority.
I note criticisms of this waste of money are completely ignored in this thread by cyclists despite the fact everyone who uses this route can see it with their own eyes every day.
Even if you leave aside opinions on cycling they are having to fix what wasn't broken before they changed anything - more waste.
Bad planning and waste of resources.
You clearly have no problem with this because motorists bad or something.
i know everything in your world is the greens' fault and you wont be able to comprehend this but this was planned before the last government, so there were no greens in government then.
do you live on the route? i live in north strand and the whole route had a badly needed facelift, it is a far nicer environment now, the cycle lane was only one part of the works.
What does this look like in reality to you? "we can get our priorities straight"
As I believe that you were told on previous attempts to derail the thread, this project has absolutely nothing to do with the Greens. It was a collaboration between DCC and various utility companies, principally Irish Water. But that doesn't suit your narrative!
What waste of money are you referring to?
So you are again admitting to knowing nothing about the leaking water pipes which badly required upgrading? Or the issues over the lack of space and subsequent risks for the many people cycling in and out of the city?
Bad planning and waste of resources. You clearly have no problem with this because motorists bad or something.
Ah would you go away, you time waster! 🙄
Well I suspect that the tiny minority will grow as a result of making cycling safer for everyone!
The fact that the vast majority of the work was actually to do with replacing the water mains along the entire route seems to go over many people’s heads.
last census gave us 10% commuting by bike and 30% by car in dublin city, so its' far from a tiny minority
But sure they'll have to dig that up at some point in the future, right?
I am cyclist and a motorist and have used that junction a few times since the scheme opened as well as being a regular pedestrian in the area.
It is very dangerous in its current format. I dread driving through there as the cycle is only possible to see until the last second and a bike won't have time to stop.
Also what happens is, all traffic sits at the red light coming outbound. Then the light goes green, you have to merge to the left lane, behind the buses, then slow down to a stop with traffic behind and at the same time the bikes are flying along on a green out of town. The angle doesn't help either. Then you have (had) a tree there, bushes and parked cars. All making it lethal. I've seen some close calls.
It has to be fixed. Poor engineering.
I'm a professional driver. 😂
Waste, and bad management, are everywhere in Irish society. They don't just apply to cycle lanes.
The same thing was probably said when the victorian water mains were put in over a hundred years ago.
You can see the barriers are level with the bottom of a car windscreen here.
Seems to be a similar setup for the turn into Merville Avenue.
But no need for it at the Marino Mart turn obviously.
I think the solution, or a part thereof, for Fairview Ave would be to move the street light 2m further towards Clontarf. Along with giving a better line of sight along their left flank, it would force drivers to slow right down as the turn would be very tight.
10 week closure to realign some sections in Fairview. I thought it was a joke when it was mentioned here recently.
Getting rid of the left turn at Edges corner has made the junction Fairview terrace worse in terms of the volume of cars turning up that road. I use that turn on a very regular basis and even being super careful when driving it's a bloody nightmare. Bikes coming flying around that corner and if it at night or poor visibility due to rain it really is a lottery sometimes. That's before we even get to the electric bikes with Deliveroo bags on their back.
It's an awful designwith very poor visibility for both drivers and cyclists.
Is the plan to just leave the parts of footpath they've dug up with tar mac? It's just so unbelievably ridiculous that they do this.
The left turn at Edges is so much safer. The sight lines and the lights make it clear for everyone. It's actually a quiet enough junction coming out of town the vast majority of the day.
There are a number of reason that make the turn at Fairview terrace troublesome. The bikes being on the other side of the park cars and away from the road. The bus stop being so close (buses are often lined up beyond the stop)
Where did you see that?
It's part of this article.
It is mad that the council can take these decisions without publishing the reports behind it.
You can see the current layout and what's planned in this article from last week:
https://irishcycle.com/2025/04/22/councillor-calls-for-pause-and-review-of-a-plan-to-change-clontarf-to-city-centre-cycle-path-that-will-push-cycle-path-users-closer-to-traffic/
Nightmare that it's going to take 10 weeks of works to re-align. Likely will be much more dangerous for cyclists in this time as will be expected to exit bike lane haphazardly back into traffic lanes.
Where would cyclists be exiting the cycle lane? The cycle lane is continuous across the junction.
I’m pre-empting the closure of the cycle lane while the new works are ongoing. Usually just a barrier plonked down with little thought on how cyclists can navigate around the closure safely. Expecting it to be less safe in the short term than its current imperfect iteration.
I'd guess the cycle lane (and bus lane) will be closed from edges corner, up until the school of motoring.
