So the balls-up has started since last night which makes Fairview from clontarf to Edges corner a single lane with bollards down the centre.
This will be a permanent feature and works will take 21 months.
I am cyclist and a motorist and have used that junction a few times since the scheme opened as well as being a regular pedestrian in the area.
It is very dangerous in its current format. I dread driving through there as the cycle is only possible to see until the last second and a bike won't have time to stop.
Also what happens is, all traffic sits at the red light coming outbound. Then the light goes green, you have to merge to the left lane, behind the buses, then slow down to a stop with traffic behind and at the same time the bikes are flying along on a green out of town. The angle doesn't help either. Then you have (had) a tree there, bushes and parked cars. All making it lethal. I've seen some close calls.
It has to be fixed. Poor engineering.
But sure they'll have to dig that up at some point in the future, right?
last census gave us 10% commuting by bike and 30% by car in dublin city, so its' far from a tiny minority
The fact that the vast majority of the work was actually to do with replacing the water mains along the entire route seems to go over many people’s heads.
Well I suspect that the tiny minority will grow as a result of making cycling safer for everyone!
All I can say is thankfully the Greens are gone and we can get our priorities straight instead of pandering to a tiny minority.
As I believe that you were told on previous attempts to derail the thread, this project has absolutely nothing to do with the Greens. It was a collaboration between DCC and various utility companies, principally Irish Water. But that doesn't suit your narrative!
I note criticisms of this waste of money are completely ignored in this thread by cyclists despite the fact everyone who uses this route can see it with their own eyes every day.
What waste of money are you referring to?
Even if you leave aside opinions on cycling they are having to fix what wasn't broken before they changed anything - more waste.
So you are again admitting to knowing nothing about the leaking water pipes which badly required upgrading? Or the issues over the lack of space and subsequent risks for the many people cycling in and out of the city?
Bad planning and waste of resources. You clearly have no problem with this because motorists bad or something.
Bad planning and waste of resources.
You clearly have no problem with this because motorists bad or something.
Ah would you go away, you time waster! 🙄
What does this look like in reality to you? "we can get our priorities straight"
i know everything in your world is the greens' fault and you wont be able to comprehend this but this was planned before the last government, so there were no greens in government then.
do you live on the route? i live in north strand and the whole route had a badly needed facelift, it is a far nicer environment now, the cycle lane was only one part of the works.
Yes, to stop people parking there. The barriers are lower then a parked car, in particular a parked SUV and thus easier to see over them and thus the cyclists on the cycle path.
There aren't a perfect solution, but okay temporary one. Permanently removing the parking space and replacing them with greenery would be better as it would be lower and improve visibility even more then barriers.
it's not like they ever dig up roads either, only cycle lanes
stick them on your ignore list, you'll be missing nothing of value.
That poster comes along into threads like these throws in a deeply unpopular take then runs off sniggering like a teenage troll not to be seen again for ages.
Yeah, probably should have just added some extra lanes for motor traffic elsewhere in the city instead. Maybe a few roundybouts too.
What a complete joke and waste of money this scheme was.
There should be an inquiry.
Not only did this take money from much needed other improvements in the city but watch as reality sinks in (particularly with the Greens gone) and ever more parts of this will be dug up and changed as is already predictably starting to happen.
I see the utility companies have already be in to start digging in places. I mean seriously...
what is the point in the barriers? is it to stop people parking there because it's blocking the view of cyclists? aren't the barriers blocking the view too?
These barriers (pic from Irish Cycle article), they have been in place for a few months now:
https://irishcycle.com/2025/04/22/councillor-calls-for-pause-and-review-of-a-plan-to-change-clontarf-to-city-centre-cycle-path-that-will-push-cycle-path-users-closer-to-traffic/
It is a bit of a safety issue, but I don't see how removing a street light pole is going to help. A big part of the problem is that the turn in question is shortly after a bend in the road/cycle track. So a cyclist going at any speed will be on the junction before a motorist can react to their presence.
Maybe some traffic lights would be a solution?
are blocked off parking spots not driving businesses mental though? i thought you're only allowed block off parking spaces on this route if you're mattress mick dumping vans there for free advertising.
Keep an eye out, and you'll see where they have orange barriers blocking off parking spots in a few places.
no didn't notice, but there seems to be different barriers and cones up all over the place every day especially coming out of town.
so it's motorists turning left coming out of town onto fairview avenue lower that are a danger to cyclists? i'll be cycling that way at some stage today and i'll try and see what the problem is.
Cars can't see cyclists on the path. That's the problem. I presume you've noticed that they've already taken parking spots away to try make it easier for motorists to spot the cyclists?
Well they has already partly improved the issue, by closing two of the parking spaces by putting barriers in them as a temporary fix. Doing that already mostly fixed the problem as it is easier to see over low barriers then a parked car, particularly an SUV.
Which shows that all they need to do is formalise that. Permanently close those parking spaces with some greenery, add some red paint and remove the street light, easy!
I will say they need to be careful with removing the street light, it might reduce visibility at night, it might need to be repositioned rather then completely removed.
There's been a number of accidents at that location, and a much greater number of close calls. It is a legit problem there, but they've been complete morons about it.
Between the poles, the planting and the parked cars (the parked cars have been replaced with barriers, which block as much as a parked car 🤦♂️), it is actually quite difficult in a car to see cyclists coming from town. It requires a driver to slow to an almost complete stop before taking the turn, which a fairly large proportion of drivers don't want to do.
Once again, cyclists are the ones to pay the price for poor driving.
I cycle past that junction every day and I have no idea what the problem is even after reading that article. All seems fine to me. Absolute morons if they're changing it at this stage I can't for the life of me see why.
Completely mad, it goes to show that DCC really don't know what they are doing with cycle infrastructure and all they have to do is actually follow the National Cycle Design Manual, rather then create their own crazy solutions!
And what is silly, they do it right just up the road! While I'm not crazy about this junction, the Malahide Road to Marino Crescent where it crosses the cycle path show how to do it correctly. Clear, unobstructed sight lines, raised up cycle path, cycle path painted bright red, sort of a curb that the cars have to go up to go across it.
I don't know why they can't just do the same here as described in the article!
Some info on there plan here, with objections from Cooney, who rightly points out that they haven't tried anything yet, and are going to change it to the worst version possible.
You'd really wonder if these guys ever cycle with their kids, or ever cycle in general, to be honest.
There used to be a MM poster outside the asylum seeker hotel beside the bus garage on the Clontarf Road. Imagine the hypocrisy if he owned that as well! 🤬
It's Mattress Mick on the back, Storage on the side. I'd guess he owns the storage business too.
whose head was it on the van then?
